Marketing decisions
You are required to come up with an idea for a new product or service in an industry of your choice and explain and justify your marketing decisions. Specifically, the assignment should be divided into two parts:
PART A: PRODUCT
In part A of your assignment, you need to launch a new (fictional) product or service in one of the following markets:
Tourism and hospitality
Fashion
Computer (e.g. a computer game – educational, sports, leisure etc. NB – horror, sexual/racial/homophobic
or any other type of violent games are not to be considered)
An ‘App” or “Apps” for a mobile device (e.g. a mobile phone, IPad etc. Again, apps depicting horror,
sexual/racial/homophobic innuendos or any other type of violence are not to be considered)
Motor-Cycle, car or Scooter
Health and Beauty (e.g. a new brand of skin care products etc or the male market)
Specifically, in Part A of your assignment you are expected to introduce your product/service and justify your decision to launch it. As an example, justification may come from a gap you identified in the market (through market reports) and/or any additional environmental changes that may support future demand of your suggested product.
For instance, a trend towards environmentally friendly products may be used for justifying the launch of an environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient motorbike.
In Part A of your assignment, you are also expected to specify and describe your target market as well as come up with a brand name, making sure that justifications are provided.
The word count for Part A of the assignment 1,000 words (+/- 10%). It should be written using font 12 Arial, 1.5 spaced. Any pictures and/or diagrammatic representation of your ideas are highly recommended. Note that any words you include in tables/figures can be excluded from your word count.
PART B: PROMOTION
In part B of your assignment, you are required to design a mood board for your fictional product or service. Your mood board will be a collage of images, photographs, texts, colours and symbols, designed to quickly and effectively portray and reflect the overall feel of your product/service. You must create your mood board on one page/slide using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or any other relevant software. You are expected to justify the choices you have made.
Also, in part B you are expected to develop and justify a promotional campaign for your product/service. Particularly, you are expected to list the media you will be using to promote your product and justify their selection. For example, justification may come from the suitability of media to reach your target audience.
The word count for Part B of the assignment is 1,000 words (+/- 10%). It should be written using font 12 Arial, 1,5 spaced. Any pictures and/or diagrammatic representation of your ideas are highly recommended. Note that any words you include in tables/figures can be excluded from your word count.
A short introduction (one paragraph, maximum 5 lines) and a short conclusion (one paragraph, maximum 5 lines) are also required for this assignment. They will not count against the total word count.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
This assignment is not judged on the basis of how innovative the new product is. Your product does not have to be innovative. It does not have to represent a breakthrough. Your product may be an existing idea that will be targeted at a different market. For example, a moisturising cream for male students. What is very important is that you justify your ideas using a range of market reports and other sources of information (e.g. information/data on the growth of men’s grooming and the health and beauty market would be relevant here).

US History 1865 to Present
Write ONE short essay in response to ONE of the following prompts. Essay should be at least 500 words, and not more than 600 words in length. Use information from assigned readings in the textbook, videos, and at least TWO primary documents (readings from The American Yawp Reader) to support your statements.
1. Discuss why Native American treatment and removal from 1865 to 1890 may or may not be considered an example of ethnic cleansing.
2. Evaluate the rights (civil rights for racial and ethnic groups, women, LGBTQ, etc.) revolution that began in the 1950s and peaked in the 1960s and 1970s. First, grade the success of the revolution on a scale from one to ten (1-10). Then explain your rating by providing a high points of victories and defeats. Research Log Prompts: Choose two or three of the following prompts. If you choose 2 you should write 750 words each, if you choose 3 you should write 500 words each. See below for more instructions on if you choose two prompts
Research Log Prompts: Choose two or three of the following prompts. If you choose 2 you should write 750 words each, if you choose 3 you should write 500 words each. See below for more instructions on if you choose two prompts. Please note that the Week 5 topic is not included in the prompts below.
1. ‘Becoming Media Researchers’
Write a critical reflection using the questions below, drawing on Stokes and other relevant other literature from the further readings lists and elsewhere, and on your lecture/ seminar notes. What are some of the reasons why it is important to study or research the media? What are some of the limitations? In what ways can/do we study the media? Otherwise put, what kinds of approaches do we find in media studies? What ‘research values’ do you think are important in media studies? How do they relate to your interests in media studies?
2,’Starting your research process’
Discuss how you would potentially define and build up a collection of sources, or a sample of participants, for one of the hypothetical research projects discussed in the seminar. Drawing on your essential and further readings and lecture/ seminar notes, include and comment on the practical and ethical considerations of developing your sample/ collection of sources. The research project you discuss can be one that you or your group have devised.
3.’Analysing written texts’
Report on the preliminary thematic analysis of data that you have conducted. How did you find themes in the data? What were the different patterns you began to see emerging? Did you reach any preliminary analytic insights? Be sure to include any visual thematic maps that you may have begun to draw.
4.’Digital media methods’
Report on two or three of different digital media methods explored in the readings, lecture and seminar. Briefly define these methods and choose an example platform on which you could conduct research using these methods. Report on the benefits and limitations of different digital media methods approaches in researching your chosen platform.
5.’Ethnographic approaches’
Report on the preliminary plan to hold interviews or undertake observation fieldwork for your hypothetical project (e.g. who you would plan to include and why, how you would find and recruit these people to participate in your project, ethical and practical considerations), and give examples of the kinds of questions you would plan to ask them, or situations that you would plan to observe and why – note: do not just include a long list of proposed interview or focus group questions – instead, ensure you include some paragraphs that connect your plan to this week’s core / further readings, and your seminar/ lecture notes.
6.’Political economy’
Report on the steps you took to begin to take a political economic approach to a select piece of media, company or industry. What did you begin to find? What kinds of challenges did you encounter? How might you try to address these challenges if you were pursuing the research?
If you choose two prompts, you need to ensure that you should include more references and do more reading around the subject to demonstrate appropriate engagement with those two prompts. In other words, if you choose to write 2 x 750 word logs, you should not just meet these higher word counts with ‘filler’. You need to put in the same amount of time and effort that you would put in for 3 x 500 words – thus, your 2 prompts will have to be thoroughly researched, referenced and detailed.

Share an argument on each side of the issue or explain the two different perspectives.
Evaluate the reasoning surrounding this topic. Address questions such as the following:
Are the competing positions clear?
Do the two positions/perspectives actually contradict each other?
Are the premises of the arguments strongly supported by evidence?
Do the arguments use good reasoning?
Are any fallacies or biases committed by either side?
Why do people hold the different positions/perspectives?
How might either (or both) sides express their perspectives more effectively? Are the competing positions clear?
Evaluate the rhetoric that surrounds this topic: Address questions such as the following: Are people being civil and fair minded in how they address the issue? How might one strive for greater fairness, objectivity, and civility in how we address this kind of topic? If we did so, would society be more likely to make progress on issues such as this?
A note about controversy and civility: Many of the topics that may come up in this forum will be controversial in nature. Understandably, students will have very different perspectives on them. In order to learn from each other, to avoid creating contention, keep in mind the following: It is not necessary to represent your own views here. You are welcome to present the arguments on both sides of the issue without taking sides yourself. This will allow students to talk about the arguments (rather than trying to prove each other wrong). If you do present your own views, make sure to be highly respectful of the feelings and perspectives of those with different views as you do so. Civility is an essential part of how we learn from each other.
