Epidemiology

An outbreak (epidemic) of gastroenteritis occurred in Greenport, a suburban neighborhood, on the evening of April 28. A total of 108 people went to the emergency departments of the three
local hospitals during that evening. No more cases were reported afterward. These patients com- plained of headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The disease was severe enough in 32 patients to require hospitalization for rehydration. Gastroenteritis outbreaks like this are usually caused by the consumption of a contaminated meal. Meal contamination can often be caused by pathogenic viruses or bacteria. However, acute outbreaks are more often produced by toxins from bacteria such as Staphylococcus spp., Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella spp. and Vibrio cholerae. Food poisoning can also be caused by chemicals or heavy metals, such as copper, cadmium or zinc, or by shellfish toxins.

Outbreak Investigation

The local health department was notified of a potential food-borne outbreak of gastroenteritis in
Greenport, and the epidemic team, including a medical epidemiologist, a microbiology techni- cian and a nurse, visited the local hospitals to interview the attending physicians, the patients and some of their relatives. Some stool samples were obtained from patients for microbiologic
identification of the causative agent. The epidemic team knew that these types of outbreak usu- ally occur in a very short time period that lasts no more than a few hours or one to two days
after people ingest a contaminated meal.

Epidemic investigators gather data to define the distribution of the disease by time (onset time
and epidemic curve), place (potential places where the implicated meal was served, such as cafe-
terias, restaurants and picnics) and person (the distribution of the disease by age, gender and
food items eaten). The findings of the initial investigation included the following information.

Sports Law- “Cases in the News”

Please pick one of the cases below and provide the following information:

The facts of the case

Each side’s argument
Current status of the case
Your thoughts on what may happen or what happened

You should conduct additional research for whichever case you choose.

Requirements: 2-3 pages in length (11 pt font, Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, 1” margins).

O’Bannon v. NCAA
Why should a sports figure give away his likeness, just because he once played in college? That’s the question that former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon is asking in a lawsuit that could reshape the way college sports is marketed.
The NCAA argues that it doesn’t license student images, just games. But in February, a federal judge shocked the organization by refusing to have the suit thrown out.
Now, 11 more ex-players have signed on with O’Bannon. Meanwhile, Sam Keller, the former Arizona State quarterback and 2004 Sun Bowl MVP, has opened up a second front on the video game company Electronic Arts, asking for his cut of the proceeds for the use of his image. The same judge who sided with O’Bannon combined their suits with six others to create a monster challenge to the NCAA’s marketing hegemony.
“This litigation has gotten to a point that has to be troubling for the NCAA,” says Vermont Law School professor Michael McCann. “No previous lawsuit that I know of has advanced to this stage. It elevates the possibility of a verdict where the damages are astronomical. Potentially any retired athlete whose image has been used by the NCAA after they graduate is part of this class.”
Considering EA’s NCAA football franchise just released its 18th game, there won’t be any shortage of names to put on the plaintiff list.

Healthy relationships

What kinds of relationships are most important to you? Do you think that people “fall” in love or that they learn to love over time? Do think that people should get married to prove they are in a committed life long relationship? Why or why not?

After reading chapters 3, 4 and 5, how can you implement what you have learned in your own life? What was the biggest take away for you from the chapters? Please feel free to add anything that you feel is important from the chapters or videos. Do not be afraid to express your thoughts.

Popular Media Application Assignment

Locate a film or book (popular fiction, not a psychology text or instructional/academic film) that illustrates one of the concepts we’re discussing this semester. For example, the film/book might depict situations that are relevant to the concepts of obedience, conformity, altruism, persuasion techniques, groupthink, interpersonal attraction, etc… Any topic discussed in our readings is fair game, but the concept needs to be clearly depicted in the source you chose.
For the purposes of this assignment, films/books that actually depict any of the classic experiments we’re discussing this semester (e.g., the recent film titled “Stanford Prison Experiment”) are explicitly not allowed. Work to “stretch” and use your critical thinking skills to determine whether your source is clearly related to a social psychology concept or not.
After referring to the film or reading the book, please use any of the following formats to report your observations: Power Point slides, narrated slideshow, or video diary (e.g., “vlog”). This assignment is not intended to be a formal writing assignment. Rather, the intent is to see you make connections between your readings and “real-life” situations as depicted in popular media sources and to express your thoughts succinctly and coherently. Be creative, but be sure that the reader/viewer is able to clearly discern that you can critique the film/book in a scholarly way as related to course material (e.g., don’t just give a “book report” in which you describe the plot of the movie/book).
You do have some leeway in terms of the length of your submission. But, please, try to be succinct. If you’re doing a PowerPoint submission or narrated slideshow, aim for no more than 10-12 slides and no more than 10 minutes maximum (less than this guideline is acceptable as long as all the below points are clearly and fully addressed). For video blog submissions, aim for less than 10 minutes. Research demonstrates that viewers begin to lose interest if instructional videos are longer than 10 minutes (less than this guideline is acceptable as long as all the below points are clearly and fully addressed).
In your submission (whether it be in written form via slides/PowerPoint or video form), please be sure to clearly address the following topics:
1. Describe which social psychology concept you are choosing (e.g., conformity, obedience, altruism, persuasion, etc…) and indicate how you see it manifested in the film/book you chose.
2. Describe the social psychology concept. What does it mean? How has it been studied in the field of social psychology? What have you learned about it this semester?
3. Briefly describe the film/book you chose (e.g., its plot, characters, themes, etc…). This description does not need to be really lengthy (you don’t need to summarize the entire plot; hit the high points), but should be sufficient to demonstrate that you actually viewed the entire film or read the entire book.
4. Clearly describe how you feel the film/book you chose relates to the social psychology concept. If you chose altruism, for example, how do the characters in the film/book behave in a prosocial manner toward others? If you chose group think, how did the characters get caught in a situation that resulted in a group think mentality?
5. Finally, take time to ensure that your finished product is polished (no grammatical/spelling errors in written work, no grammatical issues or unclear language in video submissions), flows well, and looks professional. While you aren’t expected to submit Spielberg-quality films, your submission should be at least as professional-appearing as reasonable videos seen on YouTube or PowerPoint presentations made in a work setting.
