Describe the Diversity and Complexity of Social Protest Movements in the US 1941-1973

Instructions: In essay format describe the diversity and complexity of social protest movements in the US 1941-1973.
-Many Americans think that the Civil Rights Movement began in 1955 with Rosa Parks and ended with the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Historians would tell a broader story that begins in 1941 and extends into the early 1970’s, a story that eventually inspires parrallel movements seeking rights for other segments of the US population.

-Write an essay that presents this larger conception of civil rights and expands beyond narrow definitions of the past. Make connections between topics and themes in American history and see beyond narrow definitions of historical topics.

-When you think about the Civil right rights movement which group is the one you see being discriminated against and thus protesting for greater rights?
-Use evidence to support historical arguements.
-Understand chronology and causation.

Essay Guidelines:
-In general essays should be about 1,000 words in length. This is a guideline, not a hard rule. Essays significantly less than 1,000 words do not usually go into enough detail, and essays significantly more often go into too much detail or failt to make coherent points concisely.

-Remember you will use primary and secondary sources from the textbook as evidence to support your essays. Using other sources is PROHIBITED.

Use MLA format, very important that intext citations are used to provide evidence to support information.

Essay Grading Rubric to follow:
Thesis: The essay has a clear introduction and a thesis that accurately conveys the main points and arguments contained in the body of the essay.
Evidence: The essay contains numerous examples of appropriate, specific, historical evidence. Direct quotes drawn from the text are indicated as such using quotation marks, and are cited appropriately.
Structure: The essay follows a logical sequence that makes arguments and their supporting evidence clear to the reader.
Scope: The essay answers all parts of the question completely.
Prose: The prose is clear, grammatically correct, and contains few or no typographical errors.
Perspective: The essay considers the historical issues from the multiple perspectives of relevant groups within American society.

EFFECTS OF RACE ON THE ELICITATION OF HELPING BEHAVIOR

Goal:
Summarize the scientific research process
Critique research findings and designs
Write an APA style research paper

Your final paper should include (in this order)
:
 Title Page
Title—10 to 12 words
o Author name
Affiliation
o Running head—maximum 50 characters
Your running head should also appear in the header of each page

 Abstract—between 150 and 250 words

 Introduction
No introduction heading, instead, the title of the paper should be centered on the first page of the introduction
Hypotheses should be clearly articulated at the end of the introduction section of
the paper.

– Writing this draft of the introduction will prepare you to write a wellrounded introduction for your final paper. Specifically, you will begin to learn how to use APA
format for writing style, organization, and citations. APA style is not the same as what you use
for a typical English Lit paper—it is more fact-based and unemotional (think Spock or Sheldon).
Pay attention to how the research articles that you cite are written to get a sense for the
appropriate writing and citation style.

The group projects this semester will deal with how group membership (ingroup, outgroup) and
diffusion of responsibility combine to facilitate outgroup helping. The basic idea of the paper is
that people are typically less likely to help people from outgroups than from ingroups. We will
test whether people will be just as likely to help an outgroup member as an ingroup member
when a) empathy is high, compared to low OR b) diffusion of responsibility is low, compared to
high [broad hypothesis to include in first paragraph].

Group membership and helping

wrong number technique. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 20, 218-222.

Diffusion of Responsibility and Helping

implicit bystander effect. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 83, 843-853.

For each article, you must review a) what the authors thought—their hypotheses or main
argument, b) what they did—their method including their IVs and DVs, and c) what they found
—their main results and conclusions. Make sure to relate that article back to the big picture
purpose of your paper. Pull out what you think are the most important pieces from each article to
make an argument for why we should be studying these variables as they relate to helping
members of an outgroup. You do not need to report every detail of each paper, only the pieces
that help you set up the framework for your experiment. This is a persuasive piece, based on
facts derived from empirical studies, about why it is important for us to look at these variables as
facilitators or inhibitors of outgroup helping

 Method and Results section
– For this assignment, you should write both the Method and the Results sections of your paper.
You already know the methods that you used, and I have calculated the results. In class, we will
go over the measures from our studies and the results so that you know what to write.

 Discussion section
– For this assignment, you should write the Discussion section of your paper, which is the final
major section left to write. This section should summarize your paper’s findings, connect your
results to the previous studies that you discussed in the Introduction, provide strengths and
limitations of your study, and end with a broad conclusion.

 References

 Figure with caption
-This should be cited in the paper

Your paper should be double spaced with 1-inch margins on the top, bottom, and both sides. In
addition, you should use 12 point Times New Roman Font. The abstract, references, and figure
should be on their own separate pages. However, the different sections of the paper (method,
results, and discussion) should be continued on the same page as the previous section.

Balance Sheets

the balance sheet of a company can give us a snapshot of the financial health of a company at a given time. For this discussion, you will find the balance sheet of a company of your choosing. Then you will use that balance sheet to evaluate the company’s financial health.
Go to https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html and type in a company you would like to research. Find the company’s most recent quarterly report and click on “interactive data”. In the left-hand navigation choose, balance sheet.
Take a screenshot of the balance sheet or put the balance sheet into a word document to share with the class.
Using information you learned in the textbook, what observations can you make about the company’s financial health given the balance sheet?
