Violence and Nonviolence in Global Context

Bauman argues that we should be careful not to see the Holocaust as exceptional and instead understand that this kind of event is compatible with modern society. As he puts it, ” we live in a type of society that made the Holocaust possible, and that contained nothing which could stop the Holocaust from happening” (88). He argues further that “the overall non-violent character of modern civilization is an illusion” (96-97). Bauman’s ideas can be seen as compatible with Weber’s definition of the state, but he also makes some additional observations.

Compare and contrast Bauman’s conception of modern society with Weber’s definition of the modern state. In what ways are the definitions similar and in what ways, if any, do they differ? Explore how these definitions might contradict and/or complement each other. Include at least one relevant direct quotation from Modernity and the Holocaust to support your post. Explain how you would describe the modern society/the modern state and its relationship to violence.

Influences Within Public Programs

Select a public program that has recently undergone a significant budgetary change.

As an example, suppose a state cut funding for a domestic violence program. Its important to investigate the possible changes in public policy and the political process that could have led to this decision. Was it cut because of lack of funding? Or were there other factors? What ramifications will this change have on the community as a whole? Who will be impacted most by this change? How do the resulting outcomes, both short-term and long-term, compare to reasons for cutting funding? What is lost and what is gained? In a different example, suppose federal and state environmentalists have recommended cuts to highway funding to reduce environmental impact. How might this reduction in funding affect the maintenance of state and federal roads, safety, and so on?

Discuss your topic with your instructor prior to beginning the assignment. Be sure to obtain instructor approval for the topic.

Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word paper about how the political process and changing public policy at the federal, state, and city levels influence program budgeting. In your paper, ensure you:
Detail how the change came about and its effect on the resulting program.
Identify political, economic, social, and cultural influences that caused the change in the budget.
Identify the interaction among the federal, state, and city levels with regard to your program.
Specify the limits of the agency budget office and how they may try to compensate for those limits.
Provide strategies agencies and politicians might use to justify increasing or decreasing the budget for the program you selected.

Old Worlds, New Worlds (1400-1600)

Memoirs Bernal Diaz del Castillo describes the sights the Spanish conquistadors beheld in the Aztec capital Tenochtitln. He comments that when they entered the Aztec market, they were “… astounded at the great number of people and the quantities of merchandise, and at the orderliness and good arrangements that prevailed, for we had never seen such a thing before….” It would seem that they were highly surprised at the level of development the Aztec empire displayed. In fact, the Aztecs and Spaniards had much in common. Nevertheless, a relatively small band of conquistadors led by Corts will bring down the Aztec empire.
The Europeans who follow will repeat some of the feats of the Spaniards who preceded them. However, the Spanish will be the ones to carry the “Black Legend” label, alluding to their atrocities in the Americas.

Answer question below clearly and accurately.
Explain your answer based on factual information contained in readings.
Make sure that all statements are supported with facts.

English adventurers and Spanish conquistadors were “brothers under the skin.” To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Negative impacts of 5G technologies

There has been much conversation about the Internet of Things, the Internet of Everything, faster cell phones, driverless cars, smart cities, and new technologies which will all be powered by the new 5G technology. Are there any standards regarding the cellular impact of this radiation or just thermal standards? As consumers we expect the FCC to protect our communications. Please do some research and educate yourself on the negative impacts of this technology. Note that 4g uses the radio waveband and the new 5G technology moves into the microwave band.
