Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems
As an advanced practice nurse, it is your
responsibility to recommend appropriate treatment options for patients with
cardiovascular disorders. To ensure the safety and effectiveness of drug
therapy, advanced practice nurses must consider aspects that might influence
pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes such as medical history, other
drugs currently prescribed, and individual patient factors.
To Prepare
Review the Resources for this module and consider the
impact of potential pharmacotherapeutics for cardiovascular disorders
introduced in the media piece.
Review the case study assigned by your Instructor for
this Assignment.
Select one the following factors: genetics, gender,
ethnicity, age, or behavior factors.
Reflect on how the factor you selected might influence
the patients pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes.
Consider how changes in the pharmacokinetic and
pharmacodynamic processes might impact the patients recommended drug
therapy.
Think about how you might improve the patients drug
therapy plan based on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes.
Reflect on whether you would modify the current drug treatment or provide
an alternative treatment option for the patient.
Case Study
Patient HM has a history
of atrial fibrillation and a transient ischemic attack (TIA). The patient has
been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia,
and ischemic heart disease. Drugs currently prescribed include the

Article Review: “Two Ways of Seeing a River” by Mark Twain
“Two Ways of Seeing a River” by Mark Twain
Read Mark Twain’s short essay carefully. Read it like you’re a writer. Read it at least 3 times. Read not only to comprehend the content but read to study the author’s writing choices. Focus your attention on the concepts we’ve just learned about related to descriptive writing: concrete v. abstract, 5 senses, action verbs.

“Two Ways of Seeing a River”
by Mark Twain
Now when I had mastered the language of this water and had come to know every trifling feature that bordered the great river as familiarly as I knew the letters of the alphabet, I had made a valuable acquisition.
But I had lost something, too. I had lost something which could never be restored to me while I lived. All the grace, the beauty, the poetry had gone out of the majestic river! I still keep in mind a certain wonderful sunset which I witnessed when steamboating was new to me. A broad expanse of the river was turned to blood; in the middle distance the red hue brightened into gold, through which a solitary log came floating, black and conspicuous; in one place a long, slanting mark lay sparkling upon the water; in another the surface was broken by boiling, tumbling rings, that were as many-tinted as an opal; where the ruddy flush was faintest, was a smooth spot that was covered with graceful circles and radiating lines, ever so delicately traced; the shore on our left was densely wooded, and the somber shadow that fell from this forest was broken in one place by a long, ruffled trail that shone like silver; and high above the forest wall a clean-stemmed dead tree waved a single leafy bough that glowed like a flame in the unobstructed splendor that was flowing from the sun. There were graceful curves, reflected images, woody heights, soft distances; and over the whole scene, far and near, the dissolving lights drifted steadily, enriching it, every passing moment, with new marvels of coloring.
I stood like one bewitched. I drank it in, in a speechless rapture. The world was new to me, and I had never seen anything like this at home. But as I have said, a day came when I began to cease from noting the glories and the charms which the moon and the sun and the twilight wrought upon the river’s face; another day came when I ceased altogether to note them. Then, if that sunset scene had been repeated, I should have looked upon it without rapture, and should have commented upon it, inwardly, in this fashion: “This sun means that we are going to have wind to-morrow; that floating log means that the river is rising, small thanks to it; that slanting mark on the water refers to a bluff reef which is going to kill somebody’s steamboat one of these nights, if it keeps on stretching out like that; those tumbling ‘boils’ show a dissolving bar and a changing channel there; the lines and circles in the slick water over yonder are a warning that that troublesome place is shoaling up dangerously; that silver streak in the shadow of the forest is the ‘break’ from a new snag, and he has located himself in the very best place he could have found to fish for steamboats; that tall dead tree, with a single living branch, is not going to last long, and then how is a body ever going to get through this blind place at night without the friendly old landmark?”
No, the romance and the beauty were all gone from the river. All the value any feature of it had for me now was the amount of usefulness it could furnish toward compassing the safe piloting of a steamboat. Since those days, I have pitied doctors from my heart. What does the lovely flush in a beauty’s cheek mean to a doctor but a “break” that ripples above some deadly disease? Are not all her visible charms sown thick with what are to him the signs and symbols of hidden decay? Does he ever see her beauty at all, or doesn’t he simply view her professionally, and comment upon her unwholesome condition all to himself? And doesn’t he sometimes wonder whether he has gained most or lost most by learning his trade?
Now that you’ve read Twain’s short essay, let’s start the assignment.
In your initial post to this assignment, respond to these prompts:
Paragraph 1 is a single sentence. Twain tells us that he’s been on the Mississippi River so many times that he’s gained deep knowledge about it (“every trifling feature” do you know the definition of “trifle”?). He knows the river as if it were the alphabet.
Think about your own experiences with getting to know places and people. Describe a place or person that you have come to know as well as Twain says he knows the Mississippi River.
Paragraph 2 begins with a jolt! Getting to know the river so well also caused Twain to lose something. First Twain ‘tells’ the reader what’s been lost and then he ‘shows’ the reader.
What has the author lost? How does the author show the reader what he’s lost? What kinds of descriptive writing strategies do you notice Twain using (active verbs, concrete language, 5-senses) to show the reader?
Paragraph 3 is where Twain describes this same sunset from a new perspective. Here, he ‘shows’ the reader how he would see that sunset today, with all of the knowledge he’s gained through years of experience.
How does the descriptive writing change? How do these changes impact the tone of the writing? What emotions are being communicated in this description?
Paragraph 4 is where Twain challenges the reader to think more deeply about his changing perspective on the sunset.
Share your ideas about this essay’s overall message (sometimes this is called the purpose or thesis). What is Twain trying to get the reader to realize or consider? Why does he bring up the example of a doctor in this paragraph and how does that help him build his message?
Personal Reflection: In what ways can you relate to Twain’s message? What have you gained and what have you lost by getting to know a person/place? Was what you gained worth what you lost?
Your post should be a minimum of 300 words, not counting quoted material.
Identify 3 resources that you might use for your essay, based on the topic you have selected.
The Annotated Bibliography
A bibliography is a list of references that writers may use in their research paper. An annotated bibliographyincludes a short (34 sentences) paragraph summarizing the text and the writers understanding of the content. This is extremely valuable because it saves the writer time when deciding which sources to include in the research paper. Once the research paper has been completed, the list of references the writer has used in the research paper appears on a page following the last page of the research essay, called the References page (this will be discussed further in later units).
Write an annotated bibliography according to the following:
Identify 3 resources that you might use for your essay, based on the topic you have selected.
Format references for each resource. Use APA style.
Write 35 descriptive sentences for each resource (describe each resource and its importance to the essay).
Submit your description of these 3 resources to the Discussion Board for your peers to review.
Use the following as an example:
Davidson, J. (2016, October 17). Will decriminalization solve the drug scourge? The Washington Post. http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-40144446.html?refid=easy_hf
Davidson (2016) discusses “a major push to change the way federal, state and local governments deal with drug enforcement and abuse” by Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union. Using real-life examples, he discusses the inequity in sentences for first-time, small-scale drug offenders, who are often incarcerated with murderers and other violent offenders. The information provided herein regarding drug sentencing by normal courts will contrast the drug court sentences discussed in my other sources.
Responses to Peers: Respond to someone elses choice of at least 1 resource based on the description he or she wrote. Use the following as a guide for your discussion:
What sources would you eliminate, and why? Support your response by using the TRAP test for evaluating sources.
What annotation caught your attention? Explain why in 35 sentences.
Propose at least two ways to measure the IV, social media use, and at least two ways to measure the DV, ideological extremism. Compare your operationalizations. Will these two measures be perfectly correlated? If we ran the study using different combinations of these measures, would we expect to reach the same, or different, conclusions? Explain your reasoning.
A researcher proposes the following hypothesis:
I hypothesize that in a comparison of Americans, increased social media use is associated with increased ideological extremism, all else equal.
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave.
You have an employee who is asking about the FMLA because she needs to take leave from work to care for a family member who is seriously ill. You are going to meet with her to explain it. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation (minimum of 8 slides) and address the following:
Overview of FMLA
Does the state where you currently reside have its own FMLA?
How does FMLA apply in the workplace?
Who does it apply to?
Does it apply in this situation?
Is FMLA paid or unpaid leave? Is using accrued paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, or family leave allowed?
What is required to be approved for FMLA?
Include a minimum of 1 graph or chart in your presentation.
Submitting your assignment in APA format means, at a minimum, you will need the following:
Title slide: Remember the running head. The title should be in all capitals.
Length: 8 slides minimum
Body slides: This begins on the slide following the title slide and must be double-spaced (be careful not to triple- or quadruple-space between paragraphs). The typeface should be 12-pt. Times Roman or 12-pt. Courier in regular black type. Do not use color, bold type, or italics, except as required for APA-level headings and references. The deliverable length of the body of your presentation for this assignment is 8 slides. In-body academic citations to support your decisions and analysis are required. A variety of academic sources is encouraged.
Reference slide: References that align with your in-body academic sources are listed on the final slide of your presentation. The references must be in APA format using appropriate spacing, hanging indent, italics, and uppercase and lowercase usage as appropriate for the type of resource used. Remember, the Reference slide is not a bibliography but a further listing of the abbreviated in-body citations used in the paper. Every referenced item must have a corresponding in-body citation.
