After reading Chapter 4, reviewing the powerpoints uploaded in Week 2, and the YouTube video, you should have a very good understanding of reinforcement. Reinforcement is defined as a process in which a behavior is strengthened by the immediate consequence that follows its occurrence. When we look at positive and negative reinforcement, it is important not to take the terms literally, but to look at them from more of a symbol. For example, positive is a + symbol, and what does that mean? It means something is added. Take negative as the symbol, and that means to remove, or take away. It is kind of like thinking about it in terms of a mathematical concept of adding and subtracting. Positive reinforcement is when the occurrence of behavior is followed by the addition of a stimulus or an increase in the intensity of stimulus which results in the strengthening of the behavior. Typically the “addition” is that you get something you want. Negative reinforcement is when the occurrence of a behavior is followed by the removal of a stimulus or a decrease in the intensity of a stimulus which results in the strengthening of the behavior. Typically the “removal” is that you are escaping from or avoiding something you don’t want.
For your Original post/Assignment you must address each of the 5 areas below:
1. Provide some every day examples of behavior and consequences that illustrate positive reinforcement and that illustrate negative reinforcement.
2. Explain and justify why you have identified such examples as positive or negative.

Choose three topics that you might like to base your research proposal on, choose something that is of interest to you. Consider each of the online tools listed below and choose three that you would like to explore further. Search the internet using your three chosen tools to find three sources (one from each of your chosen tools) that are relevant to your research topic and/or methodology. This paragraph should strictly focus on why you want USC’s MPH program specifically. Highlight everything that makes our program unique and stand out to you. Incorporate the specific program examples you already mentioned during our initial call. Specific classes, professors, curriculum, structure, live lectures, convenience and flexibility of the program, etc. I included our MPH site at the bottom of this e-mail which should help in choosing specific professors, classes, and so on.
Third paragraph:
This paragraph should focus entirely on why USC. You want to incorporate USC examples rather the program examples like you did in the second paragraph. Ranking, history, support, communication, faculty, your exposure to the type of institution USC is, etc.
Fourth paragraph:
This paragraph should answer the question of how this MPH degree will affect or impact you once you have it. You want to tie in your professional experience and how your experience will help you be successful within this program. You want this paragraph to answer how will the MPH degree affect your current career and the direction you wish to pursue. “Because I’ve accomplished this…, I know my next step is this…, and USC’s MPH program will prepare me to do so by…” Just an example.
Final paragraph:
This should conclude your statement. You want to recap and summarize. “In summarization, this is why I want USC’s MPH program, this is why I want to attend USC, and this is how my MPH degree will impact me immediately or in the long run.” I would also tie in things you mentioned within the intro paragraph as far as your overall goal(s) and how this program will help you get there. Thank the committee for their time and consideration, as well, and you should be all set.
