Academic research is regarded as the most basic and pure form of inquiry. This style of inquiry is prompted by the researcher’s creative mind or enthusiasm for a topic. They desire to learn more about a subject and then pass that knowledge on to others. In many circumstances, research can be beneficial. The distinction between academic and practical research is significant.Academic analysis is commonly performed for the purpose of learning knowledge. It isn’t designed to help a particular company or organization. Academic research is supposed to have come from a hierarchy of responsibility, but it has the power to affect the viewpoints of the subject under investigation.

Research ON your field is research that is searching for best practice. It looks at how
your academic area is practiced in the real world. A scholars will examine how well a theory is
being applied or used in a real-world setting and make recommendations. Predictor portfolios
have higher correlations with other published-predictor portfolios once they’ve been published.
Our findings show that academic articles are where investors learn about mispricing.
For example, in education, if a scholar does research in reading comprehension, they may want to determine what are some of the most appropriate strategies for teaching reading comprehension. The scholar will look at existing theories and such which one(s) are most appropriate for supporting students.
Research ON your field is focused on existing theories that are tested with the goal of developing recommendations for improving practice.

Formative research is for identifying problems. For example, a teacher may notice that students are not performing well or doing their homework. Formative applied research is when the detective hat is put on and the teacher begins to search for the cause of this behavior.
The results of formative research lead to some sort of an action plan to solve the problem. During the implementation of the solution, monitoring applied

research is conducted. Monitoring research is conducted during implementation of a solution to see how things are going.
For example, if the teacher discovers that students are struggling with reading because they are struggling with phonological awareness. They may implement a review program of this skill for the students. Monitoring would involve assessing student performance of reading during the program.
Summative applied research is conduct at the end of implementation to see if the objectives of the program were met. Returning to the reading example, if the teacher’s objective was to improve reading comprehension scores 10% the summative research would assess how well the students can now read and whether there was a 10% improvement.
In education, applied research is also known as action research.
Conclusion
Research can serve many different purposes. Academics focus on recommendations, not action while practitioners want to solve problems and perhaps not recommend as much. The point is that understanding what type of research you are trying to conduct can help you in shaping the direction of your study.

McDonald’s is making big changes to how it handles customer service. In 2013, the company suffered declining customer satisfaction levels and sales. Former McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson announced in 2014 that improved customer service needed to become a top priority for the brand:
“You will see changes in our customer service model as we work to create more memorable experiences and to deliver an unparalleled convenience.”

Using Customer Data to Improve Satisfaction
Having ranked dead last in the annual American Customer Satisfaction Index for two straight years, McDonald’s has come to realize that the only way forward is to listen to its customers.
New CEO Steve Easterbrook announced plans earlier this year to strip away unnecessary layers of management and focus more on listening to customers, all in an effort to more quickly and effectively respond to customers’ changing tastes.

To improve overall functionality, McDonald’s has increased efforts to capture more and better data with regards to customer feedback and satisfaction. The company measures satisfaction levels at both the national and franchise level across multiple channels: Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and customer satisfaction surveys. They then synchronize the data, creating a clear picture of the customer journey. With this information, McDonald’s is better positioned to identify critical points of interaction and, in real time, address problems which cause customer friction.
And to increase overall transparency, the company encourages discussion on social media, enabling customers to make menu suggestions or ask any questions they have about the quality of the food, a long standing point of criticism for the brand.

For example, customer feedback is directly responsible for the company’s recent announcement that it plans to discontinue using caged chickens to produce eggs. In addition, it will serve breakfast throughout the day.

Modern Day Customer Service
Some financial experts blame McDonald’s dwindling sales on the fact that the company has failed to acknowledge the changing tastes and ideals of customers, unlike competitors In-N-Out Burger and Chipotle, both of which receive consistently high marks for customer service while also managing to provide inexpensive and quick food.

Simply put, the McDonald’s model was created for a different kind of customer in a bygone era, a customer who accepted that McDonald’s prepared its food ahead of time, so that when the customer arrived, it was ready to eat. But today’s consumer has evolved, rejecting the cookie-cutter delivery model of the past in favor of innovation and individualisation. If McDonald’s is unable to provide a customer with a gluten-free hamburger topped with locally grown produce, then the customer will take his business elsewhere.

That said, today, McDonald’s is joining a growing list of companies who are choosing to embrace a more customer-centered approach to doing business. McDonald’s has come to realize that ensuring customer satisfaction is its most important commodity. A vast social network presence is giving McDonald’s customers plenty of opportunities to sound off about the company. And McDonald’s is listening.
