For assignment 1, you are being asked to create a photo and 300 words of text (hard maximum); think of it as an academic Instagram post, where an image that you post on Instagram has 300 words of accompanying text. Frame this text as an insight or critique with an academic qualification. Think of the hashtag (and how it operates in an Instagram post) and apply it – if you want – to reference and link academic content.
The image and accompanying text should offer a visual reading of street art or graffiti or offer an argument/observation on the politics of public space. If possible, you should try to make connection to an academic theory (from the class or from your broader reading).
The extremely restrictive word limit means:
You will only be able to make 1 succinct point: 1 theoretical concept + 1 observation + 1 image. You will need to think about developing an argument or observation around a single coherent point.
You will need to rely on your image to help convey meaning (not text alone).
Your writing will need to be radically condensed.
Learning Outcomes:
Develop tools to critique public space, particularly as in situ field researchers (for example on walking tours we use walking as a critical tool to engage in the politics of public space).
Develop image composition as a medium for communication (as opposed to text or calculations) and enhance our writing through the enforcement of very strict word limits.
There are a raft of mediums available for communication: text, maps, apps, video, images, calculations etc. Often in a University context, text and numbers hold a dominant position in assessment. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this assessment, then, constitutes a 1300 word essay.

General Advice for all assignments:
The most important criteria in marking is in acknowledging a ‘demonstration of critical thinking’. This can be very difficult because what can seem like your own original ideas can actually be lifted from popular cultural narratives. It’s also very hard to pull ourselves out of our immediate cultural context and view things separate from our cultural upbringing.
A good way to develop your own independent thinking is to read academic literature on related topics and then use similar argument structures or logical reasoning, but on a new topic related to street art.
You will be marked on the originality of your concept, your connection to academic material from the class and the coherence of your writing.
The composition of your image is important; what goes into the image and how you’ve framed or photographed it. When photographing the street artwork, think about where you’re standing related to the work, how you might have approached the image or what exists around and outside of the work. Include or exclude context to aid your image’s aesthetic presentation. Avoid merely pointing and shooting… Move about.
Concise writing is hard. I have a tendency to waffle. Try not to waffle. You have a very tight word limit; collect your thinking for the text, write out a plan of what to say and then develop a clear, tight piece of writing. Edit once. Then try another edit. Then edit again. Sculpt the words.
Try to avoid describing the image itself. You want to expand upon what is already demonstrated in the image of the work you’ve taken.
Identifying the artist is not necessary (and often not possible). Provide your own reading of the artwork.
Develop an original idea and articulate it as clearly as possible.

Develop an essay that compares/contrasts two of these critical theories such as:
– New Criticism
– Structuralism
– Deconstruction
– Narrative Theory
The theories should have different focuses (e.g. a critical theory that emphasizes on text, and a theory that emphasizes on the reader.) Voice is typically in third person and is an honest representation of what you learn.
In this essay, be sure to explain what the two different focuses are. Then explain what the particular theories are that you will be discussing. Be sure to mention at least one major author that contributed to the development of that theory. Finally, draw a direct comparison between these two theories. How do they differ from each other? How do these theories affect our interpretation of a text?
NOTE: You do not have to argue which theory is more valid than the other. This essay should focus more on presenting the facts regarding these two theories, discuss how they differ from each other, and how they would affect the reading of a text.
Final draft of essay should be five full pages in length (minimum). You must use at least 3 sources, and you must also have a “Works Cited” page. The entire paper and Works Cited page must be adequately and appropriately documented in the MLA style as stated on the “guidelines” page.

Develop an executive summary for your project and post to the discussion. In response to your peers, provide a peer review for two executive summaries. If a post already has two reviews, find another post to review.

You currently work for the development department of Sunny Manor Nursing and Rehab Center. Sunny Manor was once a privately owned small skilled nursing home in Sunny Beach, Florida until it was sold 6 years ago to a larger group of investors known for buying older nursing homes and developing them into larger more modern skilled nursing and rehab centers. Sunny Beach itself is a small retirement community close to larger beach towns. Most of the residents are 55 years or older, and there is a growing population of 70+ retired adults. However, the city is known for being technologically advanced for a retirement community. In fact, the city has a popular social media page followed by many residents and a very popular online newsletter that can be accessed through most social media programs. Also, 5 years ago, a brand new hospital opened just outside of Sunny Beach. This brought some the top physicians and surgeons in the state to the area.
Sunny Manor recently finished a major renovation, updating the previous long-term-care wings and adding a new wing with 20 new rooms. The new wing is solely dedicated to sub-acute rehab services, and the facility also added a new updated therapy room with an expanded therapy staff and modern high-tech equipment.
After working in care coordination and admissions for the past several years, you have been promoted to the development department and tasked with marketing the new facility. The goal is to build a stronger relationship with the discharge staff and physicians at the new hospital and expand a broader reach to the community.
The first step is for you to analyze and research the changing community and develop a marketing proposal for your boss, the director of development, on how to best connect with the community of Sunny Beach and increase referrals from the new hospital.
For this task, develop a summary marketing proposal on the above scenario that includes the following elements:
Evaluate the potential impact of the updated facility and new therapy services on potential improvements in patient satisfaction and developing new marketing share.
Assess possible methods to build rapport within Sunny Beach and surrounding communities.
