Week 1
Oppression in Society
Do you consider yourself racist, sexist, ageist, ableist, or
any form of ist that affects society? Most people’s first response would be
“No!” This is the common response of most social work students. However,
suppose you are engaging in some form of oppression that you were unaware of.
How comfortable and willing are you to explore this possibility? The reality
is, even if you answered yes, that does not make you a bad person or a poor
candidate for the profession of social work. Honest self-reflection is a
life-long commitment if you want to be an effective social worker. The reality
is that all of us engage, knowingly or unknowingly, in some form of oppression.
The willingness to explore this fact, understand the origins of this behavior,
and the desire to reduce its negative impact on your life and the lives of the
clients you work with is responsible professional practice.

Sometimes unconscious oppression occurs because the individual
is ignorant to what constitutes oppression. Oppression has been defined as both
a state and a process. Oppression as a process constitutes all of the ways in
which inequality between populations and/or groups is sustained. This is
usually done via a dominant group using its power to suppress a minority
group(s) through decisions and behaviors. This can be unconscious if the
individual or group in power does not acknowledge their position of power and
its privileges. For example, many social workers deny they are in a position of
power when working with clients. Yet, the fact is that you are a professional
in a position of authority who can make decisions that can have a profound
impact on your client. For example, you may decide to report a client to child
protective services for suspected abuse/neglect of a minor. Oppression can also
a state of being when it represents an unequal balance of power between groups
or when one group has more privileges than another (Anderson & Middleton,
2018). Using our example from child welfare, oppression is what many minority
families in the foster care system experience due to unequal access to
resources as compared to Caucasian families (Miller et al., 2015).

This week, as you learn about internalized oppression and
personal bias, you may find yourself gaining a greater understanding of your
own life experiences if you come from a diverse background. It is recommended
that you also reflect on past experiences with others who came from a
background different from your own. Does the information you learn this week
help you gain a new perspective of prior interactions? The hope is that Week
1’s materials will help you gain a greater understanding and thus more
effective cultural competency as you move forward in your career (and personal
life).
