REACTION PAPERS (0-20 points each)
As college students, writing papers will become part of your agenda. Accordingly, 5 short-length reaction papers will be required in this course (see below for due dates). Specifically, students are to write a 2-page reaction papers every week. Reaction papers should not be less than 2-pages and should also not exceed 2 pages, on the chapter/s being reviewed for that specific week (note: the cover page is NOT part of the 2-page count). Include your thoughts/opinions of the specific chapter/topic and critical points in the chapter are to be summarized. For example, what are your thoughts and views on the topic presented? What critical points did the author addressed and why are they important? Do you agree with the author’s points, why or why not? Do not tell me what the author says in each chapter word for word, I already know what the chapter is about; therefore, you will be graded on your thoughts, opinions, and arguments in your reaction paper.

Write an essay in which you analyze one or more communicative expressions of gender within the public sphere. You have quite a bit of autonomy regarding what you decide to write your paper on, but some examples include: an analysis of how femininity and/or masculinity is constructed in a specific film or television show, an analysis of how a reproductive justice organization discusses abortion rights, how womanhood is constructed within a specific political trajectory, etc. Essentially, the focus of your paper should be on the interplay between communication and gender, and orient itself toward analytical and critical engagement with how communication constructs, contests, and represents gender within a specific context. Papers must demonstrate:
A clear understanding of feminist approaches to social justice
Insightful analysis of a contemporary cultural artifact (a film, television show, social movement, event, piece of art, communicative interaction, etc.)
The structure of your paper will vary depending on your selected rhetorical artifact, but in general, your paper should include
Details regarding the history/context of your chosen artifact
The use of specific analytical or conceptual tools learned in class to highlight how gender is constructed and/or contested by your artifact
A clear articulation of the effects or implications for gender and/or feminism that your artifact has in the world
Your paper should incorporate support from texts we’ve read in class, as well as additional academic research you find on your topic. You should have a minimum of 5 academic sources. You can use APA, MLA, or Chicago citation styles, and your sources must be correctly cited throughout your paper as a whole, and you should include a bibliography at the end. Paper should be double spaced, and written in times new roman 12 pt font.

How have social media and globalization impacted mental health?
Step 1: Explain how social media and the internet have impacted the mental health of individuals as it pertains to a specific disorder (pick one from this module). For example: hoarding, body dysmorphic disorder, or OCD. (You may choose any disorder from the module and are not limited to the three listed here.) Citing research that supports your claims, be sure to give specific details about the disorder and the influence of globalization and social media on the mental health condition for the individual experiencing the disorder.
Step 2: In what ways do the operators of these media platforms have an obligation – or a right – to filter any of the content?

There are several pieces here by Ihara Saikaku, a writer known for his tales of amorous men and women, and I was also taken by Jippensha Ikku’s Hizakurige, a humorous novel featuring two friends on the road (with definite shades of Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat). Finally, there’s some writing by one of the most famous Tokugawa writers, Takizawa Bakin, with a short extract from his novel Shino and Hamaji, in which an honest man is forced to part from his fiancée by devious relatives.

Discuss the site with a classmate or friend, and slowly develop your claims about the site. Most of your evaluation should be based on YOUR OWN reading and thinking of the online site. However, you will also need other voices to make your essay more credible. A total of THREE or more published sources must be used. Note that you are evaluating a thing (the site) for its content. So your readers are interested in the site as a source of news, ideas, and opinions (not for its graphic design, its profitability, how many clicks it gets, etc).

How you should develop your criteria? I suggest a three-step thinking process:

Place the thing you are evaluating in the smallest relevant category so that you don’t compare apples to oranges.” (serious online news site with national appeal)
“Develop criteria for your evaluation based on the purpose of this category.” (You will need to think about what a serious online news site should be).
“Determine the relative weight of your criteria.” ( Arrange your essay from least important to most important criteria).
First two paragraphs: Establish kairos. What is the occasion for writing? What prompts the writer (you) to address this topic? Pages 24 -26 of your textbook have more to say about kairos. See Module Two where I also address kairos.

After your essay creates the kairotic moment, it will lead to the thesis and develop exigence. Exigence refers to the pressure to write, the urgency, the timeliness of your topic. As your textbook says, “What’s at stake?” (Why is discussing this topic important?) Your essay will include the thesis statement (the argument, the claim), possibly by the end of the first paragraph, and definitely by the end of the second. For this assignment, your thesis is the overall evaluation of the online news site and a list of the (2, 3, or 4) criteria.

As always, note that your essay should include a paragraph where you respond to possible objections to your thesis. What does that mean for this essay? You need to find a credible source that disagrees with some important aspect of your evaluation. You then concede the point or you make a counterclaim to it. Using your sentence templates may help with responding to sources. Your essay will also include recent examples from the news site to support your claims. Don’t simply tell me that your site matches a criterion, show me via example.

The example from the book is a good one that shows how to narrow a thing (or, in your case, a phenomenon) to evaluate. It shows that a writer starts with “the apple is the best fruit” but then is it really fair to compare an apple to an orange to a banana? They are so different , after all. So then we get to “which apple is the best one?” But then we decide we can narrow it further because some apples are good for pies and others for eating alone. So then we could say something like

the best eating apple is the …………… (Pink Lady, Gala, etc) based on what CRITERIA?

whatever criteria we use must be able to be used for other eating apples.

3) juiciness

then we can write the essay evaluating one eating apple. Please hear me when I tell you that many students botch the criteria component of their essays. This is a fatal blow, for criteria are the very essence of any evaluation. To avoid this error, be sure to have your draft reviewed by your instructor.

You need to first determine what criteria should be used to evaluate if an online news source such as The Washington Times is a good place to go to read hard news. You are evaluating one news source, not just one article. Start with the criteria, not with the particular news source.

For example, imagine that I am planning a trip for me and my family. The first thing is to determine the criteria. For my family it would be this:

1) must have activities for teens

2) must be below $4,000

3) must be a direct flight

4) must include water (sea, lake , or a heated pool)

After I have decided that criteria, THEN I look for a place to go. So please follow this planning for your essay.

Write a reflective essay describing your personal experiences with organizational change. Critically reflect upon the role you have played during one or multiple organizational changes. In your observations, explain whether or not you felt a sense of control and were provided learning opportunities and rewards. Based on your understanding of change leadership, discuss the various communication techniques and whether or not the communication was appropriate and successful. Contemplate how the change adaptation may have been more effective from the stakeholders’ perspectives through improved engagement tools such as education, empowerment, communication, job crafting, etc. Tie your critical reflections to the academic literature you have encountered throughout the first half of this course.
