Bioethics: Principles, Issues and Cases, 3rd Edition. Edited by Lewis Vaughn, Oxford University
Pre
Fundamentals of Ethics, Second Edition. Written by Russ Shafer-Landau, Oxford University
Pressse Description: The continued development of modern medical technology has resulted in many
serious ethical dilemmas to surface. Uncertainties surrounding such practices as abortion, euthanasia,
and cloning have led to heated ethical conflicts, with more arising with each new technology. Sadly, few
people possess the necessary background in ethical theory, and a strong enough understanding of
contemporary medicine to make an informed judgment. This class will attempt to address this. Students
will learn about the many ethical systems we use to judge the moral character of an act, and learn about
the various elements of certain controversial medical procedures. Should doctors be allowed to assist
patients who want to die? What are the limits we are willing to allow desperate couples to take in having
children? Do fetuses have a right to life? How far should humans be allowed to augment their bodies
beyond their natural limitations? All these questions and more will be examined through many theoretical
lenses.

Answer these essay questions:
Define “trait,” “behavior,” and “power-influence” approaches. List the unique insights that each approach provides about effective leadership.
Compare the following theories of leadership and explain why all types of theory are useful or not:
Descriptive theory
Prescriptive theory

Case Study: Acme Manufacturing Company
Steve Arnold is a production manager at Acme Manufacturing Company in New Jersey. When Steve drove into the parking lot at the plant on Tuesday morning at 8:35, he was already 35 minutes late for work. Steve had overslept that morning because the night before he had stayed up late to finish the monthly production report for his department. He parked his car and entered the rear of the plant building. Passing through the shipping area, Steve spotted his friend George Summers and stopped to ask how work was progressing on the new addition to George’s house.
Entering the office at 8:55, Steve greeted his secretary, Ruth Sweeney, and asked whether anything urgent needed his immediate attention. Ruth reminded him of the staff meeting at 9:30 with Steve’s boss — Frank Jones, the vice president for Production — and the other production managers. Steve thanked Ruth for reminding him (he had forgotten about the meeting) and continued on to his adjoining inner office to look for the memo announcing the meeting. He vaguely remembered getting the memo in an email one or two weeks earlier, but did not take the time to read it or look at the attached materials.
His phone rang, and it was Sue Bradley, the sales vice president, who was inquiring about the status of a rush order for one of the company’s important clients. Steve promised to look into the matter and get back to her later in the day with an answer. Steve had delegated the rush order last week to Lucy Adams, one of his production supervisors, and he had not thought about it since then. Stepping back into the outer office, Steve asked Ruth if she had seen Lucy today. Ruth reminded him that Lucy was at a training workshop in California. She would be difficult to reach until the session ended late in the afternoon, because the workshop facilitators regard cell phone calls and text messages as an unnecessary distraction.
Going back into his office, Steve emailed a message to Lucy asking her to call him as soon as possible. Then, he resumed his search for the memo about the meeting with his boss and the other production managers. He finally found it in his large collection of unprocessed emails. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a proposed change in quality control procedures. By now it was 9:25, and there was no time to read the proposal. He hurried out to get to the meeting on time. During the meeting, the other production managers participated in the discussion and made helpful comments or suggestions. Steve was not prepared for the meeting and did not contribute much except to say that he did not anticipate any problems with the proposed changes.
The meeting ended at 10:30 and Steve returned to his office, where he found Paul Chen, one of his production supervisors, waiting for him. Paul wanted to discuss a problem caused in the production schedules by a major equipment breakdown. Steve called Glenda Brown, his assistant manager, and asked her to join them to help rearrange the production schedules for the next few days. Glenda came in shortly and the three of them worked on the production schedules. At 11:25, Ruth came in to announce that Mr. Ferris was waiting and he claimed to have an appointment with Steve at 11:30. Steve looked at his calendar but could not find any entry for the appointment. Steve asked Ruth to tell Mr. Ferris that he would be ready shortly.
The schedules were completed around 11:40. Since it was nearly noon, Steve invited Mr. Ferris to join him for lunch at a nearby restaurant. During lunch Steve learned that Mr. Ferris was from one of the firms that provided materials used in the production process at Acme, and the purpose of the meeting was to inquire about some changes in material specifications the company had requested. As Mr. Ferris talked, Steve realized that he would not be able to answer some of the technical questions. When they returned to the plant at 1:15, Steve introduced Mr. Ferris to an engineer who could answer his questions.
Soon after Steve walked back to his office, his boss (Frank Jones) stopped in to ask about the quality report for last week. Steve explained that he had given top priority to finishing the monthly production report and would do the quality report next. Frank was irritated, because he needed the quality data to finalize his proposal for new procedures, and he thought Steve understood this task was more urgent than the production report. He told Steve to get the quality data to him as soon as possible and left. Steve immediately called Glenda Brown and asked her to bring the quality data to his office. The task of reviewing the data and preparing a short summary was not difficult, but it took longer than he anticipated. It was 2:40 by the time Steve completed the report and attached it to an e-mail to his boss.
Looking at his calendar, Steve noticed that he was already late for a 2:30 meeting of the plant safety committee. The committee meets weekly to review safety problems, and each department sends a representative. Steve rushed out to the meeting, which was held in another part of the plant. The meeting was dull this week, without any important issues or problems to discuss. The meeting ended at 3:30, and as Steve walked back through his section of the plant, he stopped to talk to his assistant manager. Glenda wanted some advice on how to resolve a problem in the production assignments for the next day. They discussed the problem for about a half hour. When Steve returned to his office at 4:05, his secretary was just leaving. She reported that Lucy had called before leaving to fly home from the conference.
Steve was feeling tired and decided it was time for him to go home also. As he drove out of the parking lot, Steve reflected that he was getting further behind in his work. He wondered what he could do to get better control over his job.
Questions
What specific things did Steve do wrong, and what should have been done in each instance? Provide a critique of Steve’s analysis of the situation: What assumptions remained unquestioned? Critique his logic and the conclusions he must have reached to take the actions he deployed.
What should Steve do to become more effective as a manager?

Core Assessment

In the Core Assessment for this course, you will write an interdisciplinary paper of your choice on a topic that covers the two
areas of your interdisciplinary studies degree. The paper should attempt to synthesize an answer to a new question that is
informed by disciplinary insights from two or more disciplines. It should be a thesis-driven paper or creative work of 5-8 pages.
Find two disciplinary insights, one from each of your two disciplinary minors (Logistics & Marketing) along with a problem that
integrating them could help solve. Don’t do any kind of internet search for your problem — just use the disciplinary insights you already have from your two minors. What you say about the problem will be totally new! Along the way, you might want to
consider incorporating an insight from a third or fourth discipline to support your work. But make sure you use at least two!
In the end, the paper should describe the two disciplinary insights, critically evaluate them, and use the broad model (or one of the other integration strategies) to bring together a more comprehensive understanding of the topic. Ideally, this will mean
incorporating theories, concepts, or assumptions shown in one insight to bear on another.
For a conclusion, you don’t need to solve the problem. Remember, you’re aiming for a more comprehensive understanding of
the problem you lay out. Sometimes this understanding will involve pointing to a wider context for the problem or a framework
for making progress on the problem or topic.

Morrison Company Case

Case Learning Objectives:
Analyze and address the operations and supply chain issues a diverse product mix requiring different manufacturing processes creates.
Differentiate between infrastructural operations decisions (i.e. day-to-day decisions and activities) and structural issues (i.e., strategic, involving investment)
Identify operations policies and organizational structures required by a chosen operations strategy (i.e., matching manufacturing capability to the Customer Value Proposition (CVP) and product and process characteristics).
Requirement: In roughly 4-5 pages pages (not including any appendix of detailed calculations) , and using Microsoft Word, analyze the Morrison Company’s operations and supply chain strategy. Please follow the rubric below for the format and content requirements. For the capacity analysis, you can use the provided Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet but copy your Capacity Analysis into the Word document for submission.
You are the consulting team. The company is experiencing high growth in two product lines. But…they are struggling with materials shortages, long lead times, high WIP inventories, missed and late deliveries to customers.
Your team is going to create an MBA-level Case Analysis that combines quantitative analysis and strategic framework analysis in a narrative that displays logic and application of the Simchi-Levi key supply chain strategy concepts. 4-5 pages in length for the main paper, plus an appendix to support your analysis. Spend time as a team on this case. Use the language and concepts, refer to your data analytics, practice applying these concepts; they will positively enhance your career trajectory. Use the rubric below to structure your contribution to truth.
Analysis Guidance
Walking into an operation like Morrison Company, where do you begin in analyzing its operations and supply chain strategy? Think about the problem statement–what are symptoms of the problem and what is the root cause(s)?
Walk through a logical analysis process:
What is the CVP of the Retail and Pharma lines? Are they the same or different?
Do the CVPs align with the type of product (i.e, functional or innovative?)
Do the CVPs align with the process choice, push or pull systems?
What about the capacity of the operation? You are provided some data in the Spreadsheet. What is the process choice and monthly capacity and capacity utilization? It is logical to separate the “personalization” capacity and the “standard product” capacity. What insights can you draw from the analysis?
Sales growth? You are also given some CAGR growth rates for each of the product lines. What can you infer from a 5-year CAGR analysis of pharma, retail and total?
What does the company cost structure tell you about the financial performance of the Retail and Pharma product lines?
What STRATEGIC alternatives should the board consider to address the root cause(s) of the problem?
What recommendations do you recommend? There might be short-term (tactical–stop the bleeding), and more importantly longer-term and strategic supply chain and operating strategy recommendations.

Meta-cognitive pondering!

Meta-cognitive pondering!
Due Tues., July 26. 500 words! Meta-cognitive/reflection essay on one or two of the pieces/writers we’ve read, and what you plan to read/watch/do this summer as your artistic “Darwinian” escape from the travails of daily life.
So what does this mean?????
Writer we read:
1- poet: Langston Hughes poem published: 1951
Harlem
2- James Baldwin’s essay “Notes of a Native Son”
3-Ethan Frome BY Edith wharton
Write a short personal response essay of 500 (more or less) words in which you reflect on some work we’ve read in this course that has touched you and/or spoken to you the most deeply. (Pick one or two writers and/or pieces.) Just write about what the pieces meant to you and how they opened your eyes to great literature! This is an intensely personal and reflective project, but make sure you use sophisticated and academic language. Also, think about Szymborska’s poem “Consolation” where she discusses Darwin reading happy-ending novels as escape, and write a few lines about what sort of artistic escape YOU will engage in as the summer progresses. Be very specific here! Name names!
DO NOT summarize plot!
DO NOT start your essay with vague generalities (boring “throat clearing). Jump right in with a thesis statement naming the work(s), the author(s), and making some sort of statement about them.
DO discuss how the work you have chosen has furthered and enhanced your appreciation of great literature.
Make clear what is meaningful TO YOU in the writer(s) you have chosen.
Make sure your essay reveals your mind at work. Write down your thinking; you are exploring issues. You are not giving answers or final judgments.
You are proving that you have read thoughtfully and carefully.
Also, briefly mention what fiction, poetry, or drama you plan to read before this summer ends!
(And of course place/write your essay in the “write submission” area. DO NOT submit in the “comments” box!)

Managing System Change And Improving Patient Outcomes

Week 4: Discussion Question – Establishing a Caring Nursing Environment Part 2

Discussion Prompt
Case Scenario – Establishing a Caring Nursing Environment
You are the new Chief Nursing Officer at University in the Stars Medical Center, a 350 Bed State of the Art Medical Center affiliated with a University Medical Center across the street from your hospital. The medical center is world renown for having state of the art treatments and research protocols. They were an industry leader in introducing the electronic medical record eight years ago and recently implemented a medication bar coding system that has improved patient safety. More than 50% of your nursing staff have a BSN or higher degree and 62% are certified in their specialty area. You were very impressed with the intelligence of the nursing staff when you interviewed and their commitment to professional excellence.
Since beginning in your role two months ago, you have developed concerns about an organizational culture in your department that seems cold and uncaring. You have noticed that technical expertise is heavily valued and most of your nursing management staff seem to operate from the medical model versus any nursing theoretical framework. In reviewing your patient satisfaction data, you notice that patients seem pleased with their treatment outcomes but your staff is consistently receiving scores of less than 70% agreement in areas that involve caring about the personal well being of patients and their families. In reviewing a profile of your nursing staff, you notice that the medical center seems to be a place where new young graduates come to gain experience but your retention of staff for more than 2-3 years is very low.
You determine that it is time to confront the issue of what you perceive as an uncaring work environment. You are personally grounded in a Caring Nursing Philosophy and would like your staff to consider implementing this as a theoretical framework for your Nursing Service.
Answer the following Questions
What strategies would you use to introduce the concept of Caring to your staff?
What would you present as the advantages of considering a Caring Model.
Expectations
Length: 150 – 250 Words
A minimum of 2 references (not older than 5 years) with corresponding in text citations using APA format
