Discussion: Evaluating Research Questions and Qualitative Research Designs
Just as in quantitative research, when researchers set out to design a qualitative research study, they are guided by its purpose, and their research questions align with their selected approach and the data that will be collected.
As you learned in previous weeks, alignment means that a research study possesses clear and logical connections among all of its various components. In addition to considering alignment, qualitative researchers must also consider the ethical implications of their design choice, including, for example, what their choice means for participant recruitment, procedures, and privacy.
For this Discussion, you will evaluate qualitative research questions in assigned journal articles in your discipline and consider the alignment of theory, problem, purpose, research questions, and design. You will also identify the type of qualitative research design or approach the authors used and explain how it was implemented. Narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, and phenomenology are examples of types of research designs or approaches used in qualitative research.

2. Search the web for an example of Spanish-American War propaganda. A search for “Spanish-American War Propaganda” or “Yellow Journalism and the Spanish-American War” will yield plenty of results.
3. Write an essay about a particular piece of propaganda that you found (it could be the front page of a newspaper, a poster, a cartoon, a song, or a short film) and discuss why you think this piece persuaded Americans to go to war with Spain. Did it appeal to American patriotism? Did it play upon fears or anxieties that Americans had at this time?

of events that led up to the disaster? Was this a primary event or a secondary event (i.e. a
tsunami that was caused by an earthquake)?
2. Was the population aware of this type of hazard and/or the risk they faced? Had this type
of event occurred before? Had any mitigation or preparation been planned?
3. How vulnerable was the population? Give some assessment of vulnerability, which
might include socioeconomic status, wealth, education, and/or economy in the area. How
capable were the people of escaping the disaster?
4. Describe the phases of recovery:
a. Emergency phase – how long did it last? How many people died or were injured?
What type of infrastructure damage was there? What kinds of emergency actions
took place?
b. Restoration phase – how long did it last? What was required after the emergency
phase ended? Who did the work, local people and organizations or government
entities? Were people displaced and if so, where did they go?

c. Reconstruction phase – how long did it take, or is it still going on? Was
everything replaced just as it was before the disaster? Was any mitigation
included, like building a levee or changing building codes?
5. Assess the awareness of the population at risk from this disaster. Has there been any new

there are not, why do you think that is?
6. References: include an alphabetical listing of all the sources you used to write this report,
using APA format.
