What is a law reform submission?

As we will discuss throughout the subject, law reform submissions are pieces of writing that respond to the terms of reference or questions set by the government on a particular topic. They focus on evaluating specific laws or policies or proposals for new laws or policies. They provide an important opportunity for people and organisations outside government to give their views on a particular issue.

For example, in the past, there have been law reform projects focusing on the laws and systems in relation to family violence or the law on defences to murder (please see the Victorian Law Reform Commission’s page for its completed projects for further details: https://www.lawreform.vic.gov.au/all-projects/ (Links to an external site.)). Law reform submissions written by people or organisations are seriously considered by government and can influence what happens to law and policy in a particular area. They can lead to new laws, laws being changed, or further review of laws.

As such, law reform submissions broadly:

focus on how to make the law work better;
contain the author’s view on the strengths and weaknesses of particular laws, policies or systems’
include the author’s recommendations for change or reform.
Law reform submissions need to be clearly and concisely written and advance a clear point of view substantiated with relevant examples, facts and research. They are focused on providing practical ways to make an area of law or policy more just. This means that they are not just about critiquing a particular law or policy, but are focused on what can be done better.

Assessment
For this subject, you will write a research-based 2,000-word law reform submission that responds to a real-life call for submissions.

Law reform commissions, commissions of inquiry and government bodies seek submissions in a variety of ways. They might:

publish an issues paper or consultation paper with questions that they want people to respond to
publish their terms of reference and ask for submissions which address them
ask a general question (such as ‘tell us your views on how the family violence system is working’)?

The law reform submission:

lost your loved one especially a mother, you will understand what I am talking

brother’s professorship attainment and also to spend some time with my beloved

Guest House at Mancho, off nsaw Road close to KOKO Technical University. At the
party, I saw my now fiancée with her sister who were invited to the party
beautifully looking and I went straight to her to ask her to dance. She was shy
at first so she gave me an excuse that the song was not one of her favorite and
that she will let me know when her favorite song was played. We all smiled but
I decided to ask her to give me a clue of her favorite songs. She smiley
mentioned four of them and we all laughed. I went to the DJ to request her
songs and later asked her again. This time, I was the luckiest and happiest
man. We dance a couple times to the point people thought we already knew each
other. Some even started to think that I brought her as my date. All happened
slowly but I can tell that it was the best time I had in my life as I remember.
After the party, we exchange contact numbers and our communication begun. I invited
her to a place called Coffee Shop Restaurant where we got to know each other. I
was still doubting myself as I do not like the feeling of a woman turning me down,
so I did not express any intention that I like her until I got to know that she
was single woman though she did tell me that “ I’m single but not looking for
now”. I took things slowly and respectfully as I believe that it’s the best
option to win a woman’s heart. Later down the road, I did not want to make a
mistake by going too slow so I told her that I truly like her and that I would
like her to give me a chance to prove myself. The conversation went on and on
and down the road she decided to give me the chance I requested for. I was the
happiest man ever. The understanding and respect were the glue to our bonding. Moreover,
as someone who has managed healthcare for decade before completing my doctoral
program, I felt our uniqueness as she is also a nurse working with the Ghana
Health Services. As a matter of fact, my dissertation was the impact of
globalization on healthcare among least developed countries, a topic that she
called her favorite one and she helped me with all her healthcare knowledge and
experiences. I couldn’t get better having a loved one like my now fiancée walk
through with me in what I call the toughest academic journey in my life. My
acknowledgement in my dissertation publication tells it all.

Romans and James both comment on the relationship between justification, faith, and works, and their comments appear to be in tension with one another. In James 2:24, for example, the author asserts, “You see that a person is justified by works, and not by faith alone.” In Romans 3:28, on the other hand, Paul claims that “a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law.” (He states the same sentiment in Galatians 2:16: “We know that a person is justified not by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.”) How would you explain the apparent tension between these two letters?
