COVER PAGE
Provide information that would be displayed on the cover page of of a research paper prepared in American Psychological Association (APA) format. We emphasize APA format because that is the writing style required in Criminal Justice courses at the California State University campuses. The faculty of the CSU system has requested that we begin preparation for the transfer process by using this format in our courses.
The information should include:
A “Running Head” (a brief description of what your article discusses in 50 CHARACTERS or less – a space or punctuation (comma, colon, semi-colon etc) counts as a character). This header would be displayed on each page in the upper left side of the page. For example, if your article discusses a shooting that occurred at a party, the running head may be “One killed, two injured in shooting” – this helps a prospective reader decide if they want to read the paper.
The page number – this is simple for a cover page – it will always be page 1. The page number is displayed in the upper right side of the page. APA format calls for just the number – DO NOT include the word page or your name, that is Modern Language Association (MLA) format.
The COMPLETE headline for your article – This will typically be longer than the running head. For the example above, the full headline may be “Teen killed and two taken to hospital following gang related party shooting in Long Beach. The headline (or title of your report if you were completing a research paper) is displayed in the center of the cover page.

The institution or school you are affiliated with (HINT: Citrus College) – Displayed under your name. APA is a professional writing format for many research papers. It is important to know the background of the author for credibility in some cases. Would you be more inclined to read an article regarding the Covid-19 virus written by a person connected with the center for Disease Control (CDC) rather than the personal/political opinion of a person affiliated with a community group?
These guidelines are based on version six of APA guidelines. Version 7 has been published and is being distributed with some variations. Stay with the above guidelines for your paper.
ABSTRACT
Prove an abstract (summary) of the news article in your own words – DO NOT copy and paste the news article in this area. Your article and summary must relate to a topic in chapters 10, 11, 12 or 13 to receive full credit.
The information should include:

A heading of ABSTRACT centered above the paragraph described below
A brief summary of the article in your own words. Think back to K-12 writing; this should include the “who, what, where, when, and how” elements of the article. Using the example from the cover page, where did the shooting occur, when did it occur (is it a current incident or is this a follow-up story), what happened (participants at a party became engaged in an argument, uninvited guests arrived etc), how did it occur (shooting started with shots being exchanged by both sides, victim was targeted), police and fire responded – one person dead at scene or died later. Help the reader understand the entire incident.
The abstract SHOULD NOT exceed 250 words. There is a word counter provided in this system – use it.
ANALYSIS
Identify a connection between your news article and textbook material discussed in Chapter 10, 11, 12 or 13 – DO NOT repeat your summary of the news article or provide a detailed discussion of the incident in this area. You only need to provide ONE connection with textbook material. Do not overthink this assignment and struggle to find multiple connections – keep it simple.
The information should include:

This is your final assessment task for this introductory Science Discovery subject. It seeks to build your scientific literacy and provide exposure to interdisciplinary research.
In this task, you will select one of the social science articles on climate activism and young people from the list below to evaluate. In any evaluation, you must make an argument supported by evidence. As evidence, you are encouraged to draw upon material from the article, and also to make comparisons with the readings from this and any other relevant subjects.
In the guide below we suggest a structure and some guiding questions to assist you with the assignment. In addition, each article is accompanied by framing questions which we hope may assist you to form your argument.

Your essay should not include subsections.
Try in an introductory paragraph (e.g., 100 words) to concisely summarise the argument of the paper that you are evaluating.
In the next few paragraphs of the essay (the main body of the essay – roughly 600 words) consider the article’s methods and arguments:

What methods have they used?
What data or evidence did this generate?

How to Write a Journal Response
Remember that you are injecting your own thoughts and opinions into a writing assignment.
Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
Using first-person point of view and describing personal reactions are important components of journal responses.
Discuss your emotional responses to the reading, personal experiences that show your understanding of its ideas or ways you can apply its message to your own life and education.
Pay attention to what the author is trying to do, how is the writer trying to persuade their audience? For example, asking questions like, what is effective about the writing or what could make the content more persuasive?
Observe, Reflect & Analyze
Your journal response should show your thought process of engaging with the text more than just spout out your personal emotions and thoughts. Avoid stating how much you “liked” or “hated” the reading, viewing, etc. Instead, go deeper by focusing on what specific aspects were powerful or unsettling. To take your reflections to a higher level, try examining how your opinions changed as you analyzed specific passages or researched the topic on your own.
Critical Thinking & Asking Questions
Some Journal Response assignments may present clear topics for journal responses, others may be harder to figure out what’s going on beneath the surface. So, if an aspect of the reading confuses you, try using your journal response as a tool for answering your questions. In your journal response you can pose your questions in the introduction, then search the text for direct quotes that demonstrate how you think the author responds, creating a conversation between you and the text over the issue

For this last presentation, you’re asked to research an experimental evolution paper or some other paper that addresses the central issue of Gould’s “Tape of Life” analogy and A World from Dust: if we replayed the tape of life, which aspects of evolution would repeat? Focus your presentation on one biochemical paper about the repeatability, predictability, or contingency of evolution (with actual data in it – NOT a review). You will present this paper and the background necessary to understand it and its implications to the class in ten minutes.
Please select a paper of original research (not a review or popular science) from a peer-reviewed journal. The paper does not need to have “predictability” in the title: Search with terms discussed in the book (like convergence or constraint) and/or look for chemical “control” of evolution. Make sure your paper and presentation includes the precise biochemistry and molecular biology involved. Don’t pick a paper that is so biological that it doesn’t include any biochem. At some point, you should be talking about atoms!
Consider that your audience has not read this paper and try to provide background and interpretation of the results in your talk. Finding out about background may require additional literature searches and research. Wikipedia is an OK place to start, but properly citable sources should be used for all figures, important explanatory points, etc.
Some journals, like the Nature family of journals, have a subject page on experimental evolution, which is a good place to start, or you can look through the references in reviews on this topic. Other journals that focus on experimental evolution include PLoS Biology, Molecular Biology and Evolution, and the “Evolution” Section of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Be sure to have a significant understanding of the methods, and the limitations of the methods, as well as the conclusions. Finally, be sure to connect the findings of the paper to the big picture, including some of the arguments represented in Chapter 12 of A World from Dust, which is that some levels are more predictable than others. Corporate social responsibility refers to the responsibilities of a corporation to be a concerned and engaged citizen in its communities.
