Instructions: The following questions ask you to explain the arguments and claims made in the various readings you have done in week 2 (sections 7.5 and 7.6 of your textbook). Your responses to the questions should include complete explanations of the arguments—arguments use several steps of reasoning to establish a conclusion, and you must explain each step of reasoning when asked to explain an argument (do not just state an author’s conclusion). Your thoughts should be explained fully and completely. Your response should be at least 500-750 words, but the more you explain, the better.
Your questions this week are directly related to two of the possible paper topics. If you are considering these topics, you should write your reading response this week with the aim of making the content from it into the core of your final paper.
Choose one of the questions below to answer. You must answer ALL parts of the question you choose (parts a-d) (but note that you should be able to answer all of the questions for the purposes of the test).
1. The problem of evil has long been an argument against God’s existence, and Christian theists have long been trying to find a solution to the problem of evil. In your reading from 7.5, Mackie argues that none of the solutions that Christian theists give to the problem of evil work. (a) Summarize the problem of evil in your own words, then (b) explain the reasons why Mackie thinks that one of the four major solutions that theists have given to the problem of evil is “fallacious”–that is, why he thinks it does not work. Despite Mackie’s argument, John Hick maintains that the problem of evil does not disprove God’s existence. (c) Explain one of Hick’s arguments for the claim that God can co-exist with evil in the “God Can Allow Some Evil” reading, and then explain (d) at least one of the reasons why Madden and Hare, in their article “A Critique of Hick’s Theodicy” in 7.5, think that Hick’s attempt to overcome the problem of evil does not work.
2. In 7.6 you read a selection from Pascal’s “The Wager”, in which he gives an argument for the claim that it is rational to believe in God even if we do not have evidence that God exists. (a) Explain Pascal’s argument and then (b) explain in your own words an objection to Pascal’s argument (objections can be found in the lecture and the textbook). Pascal’s argument is based on the idea that it is in our own self-interest to believe in God without evidence. However, in 7.6, you also read a selection from W.K. Clifford’s article “Ethics of Belief”. Clifford believes that we have a moral responsibility to form beliefs based on evidence because it is harmful to humankind to believe without evidence. (c) Explain how exactly Clifford thinks that we harm humankind when we form beliefs without sufficient evidence. (d) Pascal and Clifford ultimately disagree about the importance of having beliefs that are supported by good evidence. What is your opinion on this matter–do you think that people’s beliefs should be based on evidence, or is it acceptable for people to just believe whatever they want, regardless of the evidence? Explain your reasoning.
