Comparison and Contrast of 2 of the Thirteen Original
Colonies

Using primary sources (Links to an external site.), compare and
contrast the experiences of at least 2 of the Thirteen original colonies. In
your comparison, find and review the original charter of each colony (see Avalon (Links to an external site.) and Library of Congress (Links to an external site.)), paying
attention to its stated purpose and objectives. How are the charters similar or
different? For instance, you might compare Plymouth and Jamestown, or Georgia
and Rhode Island.
When
comparing the two charters (and colonial experience based on these two
charters), consider: how the charter helped determine who had power (and who
did not), how the charter influenced the growth of the colony, and how it
impacted interactions with the Native Americans? What can we learn from these
similarities and/or differences?
Note:
A primary source is a document or artifact created at the time the event took
place (such as the charters themselves). Your answer should use the charters,
but can also use other primary sources (optional).

Page 575 of Sargeant & Shang lists the components of a grant proposal. One of the most technical sections that grantwriters need to navigate is the Objectives section. The Objectives section of a grant proposal specifies what the project will accomplish in quantitative terms. People sometimes refer to these quantitative measures as SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Scaled. Now take a look at this need statement from the (imaginary) organization Connecticut Cares about the Nature. You’ll use this statement to practice developing SMART goals:

A 2018 report from the Connecticut Environmental Protection Agency showed that the Town of Yalesburg, CT ranked among the worst in the state over a 3-year average for: violation of littering ordinances, use of public transportation, participation in park clean-up days, and percent of people who recycle. A Yalesburg environmental focus group found that communication between the Town and the community about environmental responsibility is lacking. There is a need for information on: recycling, alternative transportation, disposal of litter, and park preservation. Furthermore, the focus group indicated that our organization, Connecticut Cares about Nature, could be helpful in providing training and outreach to communities in Yalesburg. In order to meet this need, Connecticut Cares about Nature proposes an outreach and education project to reach out to the citizens of Yalesburg to educate them about environmental initiatives carried out by the Town and the ways in which citizens can partner with the Town to further environmental responsibility.

Using your learning from the chapters as well as the blog post, write three SMART goals for the project proposed by Connecticut Cares about Nature above. After each SMART goal, include a 1-2 sentence explanation of WHY you developed the goal in that way–how does that goal address the needs identified above? In other words, each of your three goal statements will consist of your goal and your explanation for that goal.

Research any aspect about the Vietnamese American community in San Jose/the Bay Area (e.g., education, inter-ethnic and inter-racial relationships, community, politics, religion, media, business, etc.) and write a research paper about it. I recommend focusing on one topic and going in depth about it in your paper (rather than choosing many topics but only writing superficially about each one).

As part of your research, you may — this is optional — do oral history interviews with individuals about your paper’s topic. Of course, remember to keep physical distancing as needed as I wouldn’t want you to risk your health for this assignment!

I’ve had students in the past who interviewed grandparents, parents, friends, and neighbors and they really enjoyed the experience. They would then include what they learned from the interviews in their paper, remembering to also relate to our course materials.
As this is a college-level paper, it must have:
a clear research question/purpose/thesis. Underline and bold it.
at least 3 academic references (at least 2 from our required course readings and 1 external reading that are NOT assigned in our class)
Your academic references do not have to be about Vietnamese Americans in San Jose/the Bay Area. (In fact, it’s very difficult to find any but I hope this will change in the near future!). However, you should relate those references to your paper’s topic: the Vietnamese American community in San Jose/Bay Area. For example:
Does the reading/reference support/contradict what you observe about the Vietnamese American community in San Jose/the Bay Area?
Does the reading spark a question in you about the Vietnamese American community in San Jose/the Bay Area?
at least 10 concepts/ideas learned from our class (underline and number these concepts in your paper as 1, 2, 3, etc.). For example: #1. refugee, #2. race, #3. Cultural hegemony, #3. sojourners
