Case Study Review

Assignment: Write a 5–7 page analysis of a case study to identify the five disciplines and systems archetypes and the relationship between cultural context and organizational change inquiry processes in the organization.
Case in Practice
In the following media simulation, you are introduced to various stakeholders at Riverbend City Medical Center (RCMC). The simulation focuses on the efforts of CEO Eugene Pittman to deal with a recent crisis that has spotlighted cultural differences between the medical center staff and community members. You will reference this case to complete the assignment for this week, Case Study: Riverbend.

Planning Organizational Change Using the Four-Step Change Process.

Action Research and Problems of Practice
Read the following in your Action Research text. As you read Stringer and Aragon this week, you will learn about the ways in which action research can be a collaborative approach to inquiry that provides a means of systematic action required to resolve problems of practice. Focus on the components of these steps in the action research process: look (to gather relevant information and describe the situation), think (to explore, analyze, interpret, and explain), and act (to plan a course of action based on analysis and implement a solution).

The Four-Stage Change Process
Read the following in your Systems Thinking for Social Change: A Practical Guide to Solving Complex Problems, Avoiding Unintended Consequences, and Achieving Lasting Results text. As you read, develop your understanding of the four-stage change process. The purpose of these stages is for leaders to work strategically to facilitate long-term change in their organizations. This begins in Stage 1 by building a foundation that includes engaging key stakeholders by establishing common ground and building collective capacities. In Stage 2 stakeholders are encouraged to face the current reality by understanding what is happening and their own role in constructing the current reality. Stage 3 focuses on helping stakeholders make an explicit choice in favor of what they collectively want, and Stage 4 is all about helping stakeholders bridge the gap between what they care about and the current reality. Consider how attending to each of these stages can help you as a leader become more sensitive to your own organizational dynamics when trying to create change and innovation.

The Situation
Ongoing communication problems between the Hmong community and Riverbend City Medical Center (RCMC) were punctuated painfully during the train derailment—especially through the altercation with the Vang family. An embarrassing article about the altercation in the Free Press prompts hospital CEO Eugene Pittman to investigate a successful Merced, California, program. In Merced, the medical community has been teaching principles of Western medicine to Hmong shamans (traditional spiritual healers). The shamans act as a bridge between medical professionals and the Hmong community. When consulting with Hmong patients, the shamans instruct the patients in Western medicine and also perform traditional rituals.
Considerations
It is important for leaders to consider the cultural norms and needs of the people they serve. It also sometimes becomes necessary to consider ideas that may seem unorthodox. As you read about the strategies being considered by RCMC leadership, consider the degree to which you feel the program will be effective. What steps should the hospital take to maximize the effectiveness of this program?

Write an analysis of the Riverbend case study, Planning Organizational Change Using the Four-Step Change Process. Include the following components and use the Case Study: Riverbend Template [DOCX] as needed:
Introduce the case.
Summarize the case. Provide a synopsis of the case study, focusing on how communication problems and cultural misunderstandings created conflict in the organization.
Apply the four learning organization disciplines to the case.
Using the lens of one or more of the four core disciplines (personal mastery, mental models, team learning, shared vision), provide an analysis of the extent to which the discipline(s) reveals organizational dynamics and contributes either to organizational learning or to the organization’s problems. How could the four disciplines be fostered to have a more beneficial impact on the organization?
Apply a systems lens to the case.
Analyze the organizational disabilities and systems archetypes present in the case.
Explain and map at least one example of a systems archetype that can be seen in the case. Include at least one systems map as part of your explanation.
Recommend change management strategies for the organization based on the case.
Prior to suggesting change management strategies, use critical thinking tools to identify assumptions the stakeholders in the case may have made, and develop a set of questions you would ask to help the stakeholders uncover their assumptions and clarify the steps needed for future progress. Reference Paul and Elder’s Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Learning and Your Life text in your comments.
Describe and explain how the four-stage process could be used by the Riverbend leadership to improve the strategic planning processes that enhance cultural understanding among stakeholders and the community. Refer to Stroh’s Thinking for Social Change text.
Provide a set of specific practical recommendations about how the CEO should proceed in the future in a way that furthers the goals of supporting increased cultural understanding among stakeholders and the community.
Explain how an action research/inquiry cycle that incorporates the recommendations could be planned, implemented, and evaluated for the next phase of organizational improvement.

Assignment 1 : Entrepreneur Market Analysis

Go online and conduct a search for an entrepreneur in an industry that interests you. Respond to the following questions in a slide format, utilizing one slide for each of the questions 1-4 below. Slides can be created in PowerPoint, Google Docs, or Prezi. (Note: If you would rather use another resource to build your slides, please get prior approval from the instructor.) Be certain to utilize course content and terminology in your responses to display your level of mastery of the learning objectives. Cite and indicate your sources using APA 7.0 formatting.
For question 5, use Zoom or YouTube or another method to record yourself giving a 3-5 minute pitch on your new idea.
Provide a brief bio of the entrepreneur and the type of business he/she is operating.
Why do you think the entrepreneur has been successful?
Describe the target market that the entrepreneur is trying to appeal to in all of his business ventures (demographic, geographic, psychographic, and behavioral). What is the value of this target market?
Discuss which ways the entrepreneur’s surroundings influenced his/her thinking. What were the advantages of the entrepreneur’s surroundings for the marketplace? What could’ve been some of the limitations of his/her background?
Brainstorm a business idea that you could pitch to the entrepreneur that would be appropriate for the entrepreneur’s interests. What market research would you need to conduct in advance to assess whether your idea has the potential to be successful?

Share an example from your own experience about a change initiative that started off with great promise and then failed to achieve long-term adoption.

I need a response to my classmate below:

Share an example from your own experience about a change initiative that started off with great promise and then failed to achieve long-term adoption.
Several years ago, a change initiative involving our industry-experienced sales team to help educate newer employees with product and application knowledge was implemented to expedite individual and team development.
What caused things to slip back to the old ways after the initial change was implemented? Was it unaddressed interdependencies, lack of training and support, lack of accountability, or something else?
The education initiative was aligned to meet our core values and principles for the continuous development of employees to provide local, industry, and technical expertise creating a solid value proposition and competitive advantage. After implementation, a guiding coalition was formed to discuss learning criteria, training frequency, venue, product representation from manufacturers and partners, post-training testing requirements, and other items to ensure a successful outcome.
The trainings were held on weeknights for an hour or two after work and were executed with a high level of sales participation and organizational support for the next few months. After the third month of training, the business volume began to pick up to the point where the training began to be postponed or canceled because of customer service priorities. The guiding coalition and trainers became focused on their individual priorities while also experiencing a diminishing level of active involvement, accountability, and feedback from our young learners (1). Eventually, the training ended and reverted to less effective training methods.
What could have been done better to consolidate gains and produce even more change?
There were no incentives offered to either the sales team or trainers to continue making the initiative a top priority with their customer service duties and responsibilities. The young staff members were incentivized to attend the training by offering overtime pay. However, a reward system unifying the investment and success with both parties should have been established with management and guiding coalition from the beginning.
The guiding coalition comprised our most experienced sales personnel and management, but failed to include trainee representatives to gain their valuable insights and perspectives to ensure a positive learning experience. Involving more of the right stakeholders also would have helped keep the trainings fresh and relevant to challenge the status quo (2).
The initiative’s intent on being continuous should have been communicated better by management. Instead of designing the training to occur during our business’s “slower” periods to avoid customer service conflict, more planning and discussions involving all stakeholders should have been had to establish a better time (i.e., a Saturday morning or a Friday afternoon) to avoid disruptions and distractions.

The Interrelationships of Socio-Cultural Influences in Healthcare

Within this activity, you will
explore how determinants of health such as poverty, behavior, education,
and income are related. One common element underlies poor health:
poverty. Money is required to purchase the essentials of health such as
food, clothing, shelter, clean water, education, and access to
preventative health services. Each day in nursing, you are faced with
persons from varying economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. In
addition to varying backgrounds, you will also experience differing
patient values and preferences related to their individual health and
behavior. Caring for the vulnerable, at-risk, and aging populations is
an essential competency for nursing. Therefore, we need to explore the
interrelationships of socio-cultural influences, behavioral influences,
as well as economic and non-economic barriers to healthcare to improve
our knowledge. In doing so, we will be able to plan specific
interventions designed to help achieve healthier outcomes. You will have
the opportunity to examine poverty, behavior, and other determinants of
health in Sentinel City®. As providers of care, BSN nurses need to understand how these are related and impact the health of our patients.
Activity Instructions:
Review course textbook and other resources.

Review Sentinel City® demographics and neighborhood demographics. Meet with Mayor Hill who can provide some information about Sentinel City® economics. Enter Sentinel City®
and begin the bus tour. After touring Sentinel City, select a specific
vulnerable or minority population group and identify one of the most
common diseases, chronic condition, injury, or health concern that
impacts your population group. Then list a total of 3 determinants of
health from the Healthy People website. During your tour of the city,
describe 1 observation related to the 3 selected determinants of health.
(a total of 3 observations must be described). Note indicators of high
or low employment. Consider education levels, number of female head of
households, and median household incomes for example. Finally, describe
a total of 3 strategies or evidence-based recommendations to help
reduce or eliminate the selected observations noted during your Sentinel
City® tour.

Sentinel City information needed.
Dwayne
Thomas, a resident of Industrial Heights, is a veteran suffering from
homelessness. Shortly after his deployment, Dwayne began experiencing signs of
PTSD causing him to have flashbacks and become aggressive towards family and
property. His destructive behavior led to him staying overnight in abandoned
buildings or beside local reservoirs for the last two years. To cope with his
situation, Dwayne drinks alcohol and smokes marijuana. In this assignment, I
will be discussing and examining how certain determinants impact Dwayne’s health.

Dwayne also suffers from a mental illness. He has untreated PTSD.
The citizens living in Industrial
Heights are experiencing several determinants making life difficult to achieve a
maximum level of health. Poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and lack of availability
to attend a university or graduate school.

Poverty in Industrial
Heights is at an all-time high compared to other cities.

The average income in
a household in Industrial Heights is only $24,672. There is only one clinic located in
the neighborhood that provides health services. The Better Health Clinic only
operates certain hours of the day. This makes receiving care quickly difficult
because the local hospital is on the other side of Sentinel City.

According to the
Sentinel City school district report, only one state-funded university exists. Majority
of schools available to graduates in the city are for-profit, private, or
relate to a specialty.

45 percent of
Sentinel City high schoolers report they spend most of their daily activities
sleeping. Only 30 percent admitted activities were educational.

The term “anomie” describes the feeling of alienation that a person would experience as a result of weakened social bonds. Some sociologists worry that more people in our society are becoming alienated. Think of an activity that you participate in that uses modern technology. Is this activity something that you can do alone? Has this always been a “solo” activity, or has it changed over time? Can you think of other activities that used to require interaction that can be done alone now?
