The article I chose from the Correlation of Causation website to dissect was titled “Sincere Smiling Promotes Longevity”. The basic premise that the authors were trying to claim was that individuals who smile in a sincere manner tend to live longer lives. The issue in that claim is that smiling on its own, no matter how one smiles, does not have some magical vitality boosting quality. What is much more likely the case behind this claim is that happy people tend to live longer for a myriad of reasons. Happy people are probably not as likely to participate in self-destructive behaviors like substance abuse or the other methods individuals employ to distract or escape from their negative emotions.
One of the articles I’ve read for the final project focused on the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic stress. Over the course of the article the authors outline a few correlations they found but the one I’d like to create into some clickbait article headline was the positive correlation between emotional intelligence and academic performance. What the authors were saying was that a student’s level of emotional intelligence predicted the student’s ability to manage and harness the stress they felt from academics and use it as a motivational tool. This idea may sound familiar to some of my fellow procrastinators, I don’t feel stress to complete an assignment until the due date is nigh, but once that stress is present, I enter my flow state and complete the assignment with next to no distractions. The way that correlation could be manipulated could be “emotional intelligence predicts IQ”. The news source might see what the authors wrote and just take it at the superficial level that emotionally intelligent individuals are smart and good at school so they must have high IQ.

Causation is the relation of cause to effect, which means that “A” causes the outcome of “B.” Correlation is simply a relationship where the change in one variable causes the next to change. My article of choice involved three men connected with a weekend shooting in Sacramento. The investigation is still being analyzed and is still active. It was stated that all charges were enhanced with use of a handgun in the commission of crimes. This demonstrates an example of causations. “A” being the men with handguns were why 6 people were killed and injured. This reflects a causation effect because if the men had not owned handguns, those 6 people would still be alive (Readon,2022). I do not believe that the author of this article interpreted it inaccurately. However, I do think the article can support both causation and correlation.
