Begin to assemble your research paper by adding a central claim, supporting claims, evidence, and reasoning to your literature review. The document you submit to this assignment should include a title, introduction, your literature review, and at least three paragraphs to begin your discussion/argument section. In other words, you will mainly be adding your central claim and several supporting paragraphs to your literature review. Here is some additional guidance on completing this assignment:
Begin with a claim. This claim may be 2-3 sentences long, and sometimes consist of an entire paragraph. Your claim should advance a particular point of view on the topic. Ensure your discussion offers something new. It is often the main challenge to discover a new perspective on the facts and research presented in the literature review. It might help to construct your discussion section around one of the following:
Offering a potential solution to a problem presented in the literature review,
Presenting a new way of interpreting the evidence presented in the literature review, or
Outlining a practical plan for addressing (or responding to) the issue presented in the literature review.
Write your discussion section to your particular audience. Who are your readers, and what are their needs and concerns? Are you writing to a group of city planners, community college teachers and administrators, parents and child therapists, or Orange County realtors? You are writing a scholarly research paper for a scholarly or professional journal, so you will need to imagine the journal and the scholars or professionals who are most likely to read this journal. Once you have this rhetorical context in mind, it becomes easier to construct a meaningful claim.
Include at least two supporting body paragraphs for your claim, and avoid restating facts already established in your literature review. You can reflect back to information in the literature review, but the purpose should be to show how the information supports the claims set forth in the argument section. You can also bring in new sources in the argument section to deepen the information already set forth in literature review, but this isn’t absolutely necessary. Often, reflecting back to the sources in the literature review (and potentially offering a few additional quotes or paraphrases from these sources) will be enough evidence to support your claims.

This is assignment is meant to prompt your personal reflection regarding how secular approaches to helping families intersect with Christian traditions and teachings. In this assignment, you will summarize and synthesize information from several sources and clearly and coherently explain how to succeed in some field, area, or activity to readers who are not already familiar with the information. It builds on what you learned in ENG 101 about writing from multiple sources (e.g., summary, paraphrase, and quotation), but it also reinforces the critical thinking skills of analysis and synthesis as well as source citation.
Assignment Instructions
Your paper should be 7-9 pages in length and include information from 6 sources related to your topic. Your content should emerge from a summary and synthesis of source content, combined with your own personal knowledge about the topic. Part of the challenge of synthesizing information from multiple sources is making strategic decisions about what information to include and what not to include; often, the latter decision is more difficult than the former. For example, if you were to explain how to succeed in the college application process to students in a high school science class, consider why these readers might need or want this information.
In addition to including information based on your own knowledge and experience, use a combination of quotations and paraphrasing from your sources; as you should have learned in ENG 101, all information from sources—whether quoted, paraphrased, or summarized, whether words or images—must be cited. Keep in mind, though, that your voice, not your sources’, should be most prominent in your report.
Include any appropriate visuals that will enhance the effectiveness of your report. Use of visuals in this assignment is optional. All borrowed visuals must be cited. Do not include gratuitous visuals, such as clip art; include only visuals that convey relevant meaning and help readers understand the information.

Characteristics of a Synthesis:
1. In the intro:

3. Your synthesis section/s should:

-Remind your readers how these themes connect to your topic.
-Close in a memorable fashion, still supporting your thesis.

There need to be 8 sources. Three of these 8 will be audio/visual sources, and five will be sources that you quote, paraphrase, or summarize. The sources have to support specific points. You also have to use a variety of sources and can’t use only websites.
