The American Civil Rights Movement impacted the lives of blacks in both the North and South. James Baldwin argued in his book The Fire Next Time that second class citizenship for black Americans is a stain on the United States of America’s image as a Christian nation which stands for all that is morally right in the free world. Using this statement as a basis or point of view from which to write an essay, discuss the racial contradictions Baldwin cites in his book and what segments of American society help facilitate the production of these inequalities. Also, discuss how this process effected his childhood and teenage years. Second, what leaders did he meet with, what are the topics of their discussions, and what were Baldwin’s impressions after? How were people of African descent beginning to experience freedom and how did they go about obtaining their rights during the 1960s? Last, in your estimation, what is the status of race relations in the United States and has there been real racial reconciliation among ethnic groups? Would you argue there is harmony and peace in our global community as it relates to racial and ethnic relations (How does this look now considering the current protest against police violence)?

This assignment is an opportunity for students to learn how to prepare the major components of a simple grant proposal for a government or non-profit agency. It involves preparing a proposal requesting a great of money to purchase an item (or items).

Heading Instructions: At the top of the first page, place the following TITLED Heading:
GRANT PROPOSAL FOR Item(s) to be purchased FOR THE Applicant Name FROM THE Funder Name

Component #1 – Introduction (All seven bullets listed will make up your first paragraph of the introduction)
Select applicant name – This is the name of the government or non-profit agency that is seeking the funding. You can make the name up, or use an actual organization.
Select a funder name – This is the name of the organization from which you are requesting funding. You can also make this name up, or use an actual organization.
Select a purpose for the grant – This is the specific item(s) you want to purchase with the funding that you are requesting. For this assignment, the items to be purchased must be tangible, quality items that will not need to be replaced for at least 5 years. The maximum total cost is $50,000. Important: The request must NOT be for any items that would typically be found in the operating budget of the agency, nor can it be for a project, program, or event that would likely be continued in subsequent years after the grant moneys used. The funder might assume, if the project, program, or event is successful, that the applicant would come back requesting money over and over again, year after year. In addition, items to be purchased with the grant money must be quality, commercial items, not residential.
Indicate the total cost for purchasing the item(s). – This is the total cost of the item(s) you are requesting money for (up to a maximum of $50,000).
Select the requester amount – This amount of money you are requesting from the funder must be for only a portion of the cost of the selected items(s). This is because you will need to indicate a matching funds source. Funders are encouraged when an applicant has made the effort to obtain a portion of the needed funding from additional sources. Thus, will indicate the amount of money you are seeking based on some portion of the needed funding, not the entire cost.
Select a matching funds source and amount – This source indicates where the rest of the money to purchase the item(s) will come from, since you are only requesting funding for a portion of the total cost for the item(s). You can identify one or more contributors (Examples include: monies from a fundraising event, private donor, government grant, etc). You will also indicate the amount of money being received from this source. This amount will equal the remainder of the amount of the needed money for the grant proposal.
Select a fiscal year – this is the fiscal year used by the applicant. The grant proposal must indicate the fiscal in which the grant money, if received, will be spent on the item(s) to be purchased. Keep in mind the FISCAL YEAR begins July 1 and ends June 30.
Indicate a “success statement” about the applicant – This indicates how the organization came to consider the need to purchase the item(s) based on some type of “success.” Examples might include the need for a new passenger van followed by the successful completion of the annual operations review meeting of the therapeutic recreation staff, the need for new computer equipment following a successful executive board “brainstorming” retreat where it was determined to create a computer room in the community center, the need for a new park storage facility following the successful organization winner in a NIKE sponsored community sports programming contest, etc.

Component #2 – Organization Description (Organization description of the applicant)
This includes indicating the type of organization, the organization’s location, the year it was founded, the applicant’s mission, the population served by the organization, and how many people are served.

Component #3 – Needs (Describe the need and how the need was determined)
This is where you explain the need for the item(s) for which you are requesting funding. Examples include the organization’s passenger van is old and is frequently being repaired, fitness equipment is needed to furnish a planned fitness facility, new lifts are needed for disabled individuals to be able to use the community center swimming pool, etc. You also need to indicate how the need was determined. Examples include the mechanic who services the van recommended replacing it for several reasons, developing a new fitness are in an unused space of our recreation facility was a recommendation following a board planning retreat, as we’ve had an increase in requests for swimming pool usage from local group homes with disabled clients two additional lifts for our pool are needed, etc.

Component #4 – Objectives (Describe the objectives to be fulfilled by the grant money)
These indicate what is to be accomplished if the money is granted and the item(s) are purchased. These objectives must be measurable. Each objective starts with the word “TO.” Examples include to enable an increase of 20% ridership for local elderly individuals, to launch a new fitness facility to be enjoyed by at least 50 users by the end of the fiscal year of 2019, to have 6 of the 9 local group homes utilizing our community swimming pool within 6 months of the installation of the new lifts, etc. You should list at least 5 objectives.

Component #5 – Logistical Description (Describe the purchase and utilization of the item(s).
Here, if funded, how will the item be purchased, by whom, and briefly explain how the new item will be used in the agency’s operation, program, event, or service.

Component #6 – Capability Statements (Indicate statements showing the applicant deserves to be funded)
These state why the applicant deserves to be funded. You must make up at least TWO convincing points here. Examples, include the programs and activities of the agency are of high quality, the agency is well managed and has fiscal accountability indicated by…., the agency provides service to a broad constituency including…etc.

Component #7 – Evaluations Strategy (How will an evaluation to be conducted and the funder informed of the results)
This explains, if funded, how an evaluation will be conducted to determine whether the stated measures objectives in Component 5 were met. This can involve conducting a survey, determining the number of participants in a program or the number of programs offered, staff observations, etc. Examples include we will determine and compare the percentage difference between the previous ridership on the old van vs. the ridership with the new van, we will determine the number of users of the new fitness facility, we will determine the number of local group homes utilizing the new pool lift, etc. You must also indicate how the funder will be informed of the results of the evaluation. Examples include funder will receive a full evaluative report, our executive director will conduct a meeting with the funder’s executives to inform them of the evaluation results, etc.

Component #8 – Budget (Indicate both income, the grant money, and expense)
This will show the full cost of the item(s) to be purchased with the funding, and where each of the amounts of money will be coming from (the grant amount and the matching funding amount added together). These two amounts should be identical.

Your grant proposal must consist of ALL 8 components above, with each component properly titled.
You can be as creative but be specific as possible.

Organization:
Introduction that begins with a hook and ends with a thesis statement. Your thesis statement should express the significance of your author and include a relationship between points you make in your paper. Focus on how and why, not just statement of fact.
Body that includes at least one paragraph each over the Major Points to Cover
Conclusion that avoids merely repeating what has already been stated. This is a good place to discuss the writer’s legacy and his or relevance in American literature.
Depending on the type of writer you choose, your reading load will vary. For a novelist, you must read at least one of his/her novels (one which has not been, and will not be, read in class). For a poet, you must read at least ten of his/her poems. For a short story writer, you must read at least three of his/her short stories. For a playwright, you must read at least one of his/her plays (as well as watch a recorded performance if possible).
Avoid creating a copy-and-paste patchwork quilt of information you read online. Most importantly, avoid plagiarizing. Be sure to review the plagiarism policy in the syllabus. It is more important to interact with the writer’s work(s) and make connections than it is to report what you can find online.
Also avoid praising the writer or his or her works.
Your final draft will be 6 to 7 pages in MLA format, with an additional Works Cited page that includes the author’s works you choose plus at least five additional sources. At least three of your five additional sources must come from GIL or GALILEO. If you other two do not come from GIL or GALILEO, they must be credible and pass the CRAPP test for research. Using Google Search Tricks can help you find credible sources. In general, crredible sources end in .edu or .gov., so avoid .com sites (except for an established media source such as the Wall Street Journal). Carefully scrutinize .org sites.
