This is the final assignment of the year. The deadline for this
assignment is firm. No extension can be granted
as the course is done.

Instructions:
Complete a critical
analysis of one of
the following articles attached to this document.
Once you have chosen
your article, please do the following:
1)
Prepare a maximum 180-word summary using the universal summary method discussed
in class. The summary shall act as the first part of your essay. You do not
need a separate introductory paragraph.
2)
An analysis of Logos in the article. This section of the assignment
should be a number of paragraphs in length; it should include a CRAAP test
analysis of relevance and accuracy, as well as a comprehensive discussion of
the organization of the argument, including a breakdown of the logical
organization of the argument, the claims, their supports, and the general
sufficiency and validity of the argument. Be sure to use examples to support your
analysis.
3)
An analysis of Ethos and Pathos. Your analysis of the
primary appeal to persuasion should be the focus of this part, but you must
complete an analysis of each. For Ethos, your analysis should present clearly
how the author claims authority, borrows authority and connects with the
reader. This section should also provide a discussion on the bias. For Pathos your
analysis must clearly express the principle of emotion or call to action being
used to persuade. This section should also examine the various rhetorical
strategies that the author uses to persuade via Pathos. Remember to provide
examples.

This section of the assignment
should be a number of paragraphs in length. Be sure to use ample examples to support
your analysis.
Note:
You are completing one
essay. This is not a report, so please do not label or number the sections of
your analysis. Each section of your analysis should flow succinctly and
smoothly one to the other.
Here are some tips to
keep in mind:
After the summary,
begin immediately with your critical analysis of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
The general structure
should look something like this:
Paragraph one: Summary
Paragraph 2 – Audience
analysis. The CRAAP test section on currency & authority provides a number
of valuable questions. Use these questions to help you create this paragraph.
Remember to structure your answers as a full paragraph and not Q&A.
Paragraph 3 – 5:
Logos. Here you want to move directly into a discussion of logos. Like this:
1.
Begin by
declaring how the argument is structured.
2.
Move on to
a presentation of the main claim and an account of the three supporting claims.
Use the structure: first, second, third, and make sure your account of the claim
is broad enough to express the author’s reasons.
3.
In one to
two paragraphs, provide an account of the types of evidence used to support the
claims. Be sure to provide some examples. For example, if you say, “the author
uses mainly historical fact to support claims the first two claims,” you must
also provide an example of such evidence to show you know what a historical
fact is. You do not have to provide each example. Choose the one you feel best
expresses historical fact.
4.
Conclude
with a paragraph where you examine sufficiency, accuracy, relevance, and
typicality.
Paragraph 6 -9 Pathos and/or
Ethos depending on which is primary – your decision should be based on what you
feel is the primary persuasive appeal. Begin with the one that is not primary. You
will need about one-two paragraph for the ethos and about two paragraphs for
pathos. For pathos in particular, if it is the primary appeal to persuasion, you
will want to be as specific as possible when you outline the rhetorical devices
(connotation, passionate proofs, etc.) used to arouse passion or emotion or a
call to action.
Paragraph 9 –
conclusion
Please note, that you may
have slightly fewer or slightly more paragraphs. Make sure your paragraphs are
reasonable in length. If your paragraphs are too long, i.e. one page, divide
them. If your paragraphs are too short, i.e. 2 sentences, connect them.

Your document should
be presented double spaced and typed. Your document should be presented as an essay
in proper essay format.
You must provide relevant examples for each section of your analysis, and you must use the
terminology of each persuasive appeal correctly. For example, in your analysis
of logos, you say the main claim and not the thesis when you write about the overarching argument the author
makes.
Substantial marks will
be removed if you include headings, subheadings, lists, or numbers in your
essay. You must adhere to APA 7 format specifically.

reference section in APA 7 style.
