The purpose of the stand-alone literature review is to provide a summary, synthesis, and critical evaluation
of the literature relevant to your specific research question or aim. The literature review will contribute something
new to the topic, so it will not be a discussion that has been repeated or previously established in the past.
Your literature review assignment for this course should focus on how multiple scholars have examined the
“knowledge popularization”, “knowledge dissemination” or “science communication” of a specific topic in areas of
the “harder” sciences (Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Computer Science, Applied Sciences, etc.).
Writing a literature review will give you the opportunity to demonstrate skills in two main areas: (1)
information seeking: the ability to scan the literature efficiently and to identify a set of useful articles and books and (2)
critical appraisal: the ability to apply principles of synthesis to analyze unbiased and valid studies.
This scientific/academic genre is not composed of just a descriptive list of the material available, or a set of
summaries.

Readers of your literature review will appreciate seeing the use of the following stylistic features:
• Integral and non-integral citations that manage your readers’ experience of the conversation(s) you are
constructing in your review
• Reporting expressions with reporting verbs that capture the research activities, findings, claims, ideas being
reported
• A mix of levels of information (high, mid, and low) that help your reader understand the sources’ reasoning

Description of Task:
After you’ve read about the Drake Equation, you will create your own version of it with your own values and write an essay about the Drake Equation with your calculated result of how many communicating intelligent civilizations may exist in our galaxy. Choose values for each term, and in each case give a scientifically reasoned explanation for your choice (with references where appropriate). Comment briefly on the implications of your result for the number of civilizations in the galaxy, and its consistency with the fact that we have no direct evidence of other civilizations. Derek fell into being a reporter. He trained as a real estate representative, but discovered he liked talking to people and preparing listing sheets and newsletters much better than he liked standing around some kitchen while prospective buyers trooped through an open house. He was not terribly successful at selling houses, either, which likely spurred his career change.

STRUCTURE OF A SUCCESSFUL DEFINITION ESSAY
Our essays will follow the conventions outlined in standard MLA guidelines. This includes not only formatting (font, space, etc.) but structural conventions. Following these basic structural conventions will help us deliver our message clearly, precisely, and effectively.
Introduction (one or more paragraphs): Opens your definition argument by engaging your reader’s interest, and, over the course of the introduction, logically guiding your reader to your topic/definition. Ends by presenting your complex definition along with a “roadmap” of the central points that you will use to explore that definition.

· Information that the audience needs to understand before moving forward (context, background material, etc.)
· Write an explanation of definition description and clarification of evaluation criteria.
