Women in Film – Crazy Rich Asians

For the most part, romantic comedies follow a pretty straight forward formula.

They generally start with somebody being unhappy because they are single, dissatisfied with their job etc. Then the potential couple meets and often at first, they do not get along. This distaste for each other is often the first source of comedy. As time passes, however, the viewer can tell that at some point the feelings will change. It is here that conflict usually occurs and their relationship is at risk or tested. Oftentimes this has to do with some sort of misunderstanding or lack of communication. Eventually, however, they overcome the conflict. Overcoming the conflict often follows with some sort of literal chase (think of all the romantic comedies that end in the guy chasing the girl to the airport) and a love speech.

Please watch the film Crazy Rich Asians. As you watch, think about the romantic comedy formula that we previously discussed. In what ways does the film align with the formula and in what ways does it not align.
