Section 8 Housing

Descriiption: An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief descriiptive, critical, and evaluative paragraph (the annotation) which provides your view of the relevance and importance of the source to the policy. Students will write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book, article or documentary. You will need a minimum of 10 sources, with a minimum of 4 scholarly articles from recognized research journals, and no more than 2 documentaries or films. Sources should be no older than 7 years. It would be wise to have at least the relevant state or federal laws; state or national statistics; or government documents, as this bibliography will be used for your final assignment. Sources such as Wikipedia, about.com, or similar sites are not appropriate for this assignment.

Include one or more sentences that discusses or presents:
The authority or background of the author.
Intended audience and level of reading difficulty.
Purpose.
Bias or standpoint of the author.
Theoretical Framework/political stance/ School of thought.
Findings, results, arguments and conclusions.
Compare or contrast this work with another you have cited.
Explain how this work illuminates or is relevant to your policy.

Identify two arguable sides about your first issue related to your career or degree field.

Prompt
Now that you have spent some time writing down some potential issues for your project, it is time to narrow the focus.

Part One: After exploring the library databases and reviewing your brainstorming activity, select two potential issues that are related to your career or degree. Again, ensure that you are selecting and writing about two different issues. Each section should be written as a fully developed, 5–8 sentence paragraph.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

Identify two arguable sides about your first issue related to your career or degree field.
Identify two arguable sides about your second issue related to your career or degree field.
Part Two: After exploring both sides of each issue, choose one to write about in your final persuasive essay.

Specifically, you must also address the following rubric criteria:

Choose a side that you might argue.
Identify why your topic would be meaningful to your audience (people connected to your career or degree field).

professor’s input
No worries on the “rant” issue; this is just brainstorming topics, so it is good to be free with opinions and ideas at this stage. Both of these ideas are excellent, but I could actually see the second one folded into the first quite easily. Planned obsolescence is a function of having a consumer culture as opposed to having one that values craftsmanship and quality.

The choice is yours, but I would suggest going with the idea that mass production has resulted in lower quality for consumer goods. That ripple effect has some dire consequences on the downstream side of the supply chain.

If you go in that direction, see if you can compose a solid research question that will help you to guide your inquiries. These are just a couple that came to mind for me:

What are the downsides of having a consumer culture that privileges newness over functionality?
What are the long-term consequences of planned obsolescence for first world countries? What about for developing nations?
My guess is that some additional clarity will be forthcoming as you move through the work this week.

environmental issue poetry

CREATIVE WRITING | Poetry Poems can inspire and illuminate; a poem about the environment can move the reader to action or to tears. Poetic images can be literal or metaphorical; the poet can distill facts or amplify into the realm of imagination. The poet finds ways of using form and style to emphasize content, but whether formal or free verse, the end result will touch the reader. Poems can be in any form or style but will ideally use imagery and clear expression to evoke an emotional and/or intellectual response in the reader. Poems should address an environmental issue directly or indirectly. Simply mentioning a river or a mountain will likely be insufficient, but the poetry need not be didactic.

Jim Fisk and Josie Mansfield

Movies and stories get recycled and remade all the time. The 2021 film West Side Story was a remake of the 1961 movie of the same name, which was a take-off on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which borrowed from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

Your assignment is to propose a Netflix miniseries based on The Murder of Jim Fisk for the Love of Josie Mansfield. In the first part of your proposal, summarize the story, characters and plot as they exist in the book. In the second part, explain what you would keep and what you would change for your miniseries.

Bear in mind a few things. No one tries to corner the gold market these days, because the money system works differently. So come up with another scheme, perhaps based on social media or cryptocurrency. Also, the opportunities for women are much broader today than in Josie’s time; your Josie will have more options than the real Josie had.

Use your imagination, but make your story believable. And make it appealing: you’re trying to win over the Netflix bosses.

Demonstrate your ability to craft messages for the appropriate purpose, tone, structure, and audience.

Touchstones are projects that illustrate your comprehension of the course material, help you refine skills, and demonstrate application of knowledge. You can work on a Touchstone anytime, but you can’t submit it until you have completed the unit’s Challenges. Once you’ve submitted a Touchstone, it will be graded and counted toward your final course score.

This particular Touchstone gives you an opportunity to practice your communication, technology, and productivity skills. You will show that you can use written communication, digital tools, and time management to solve a customer issue. (You’ll also have a chance to practice your self and social awareness skill as you craft your message.) Together, these skills will allow you to communicate your best with a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes both in and outside work, making you more productive no matter what task you take on.

Touchstone: Plan and Communicate a Time-Based Task
SCENARIO: On Monday morning, you arrive at work and discover you have an email from your manager, Sara, about a customer service issue. She is worried because one of the company’s most important clients did not receive their shipment. While she acknowledges it isn’t your fault, she needs you to work quickly to resolve the issue. Her email outlines some tasks that must be completed in order to address the problem and fast track the solution:

So last Friday, our client didn’t receive their shipment, and now it’s Monday, making it three days late. We need this problem fixed soon. I need you to email Renee Colon, the client’s executive assistant, right away. Apologize for the delay and let her know we’re fixing this issue, but don’t overdo it. Make sure they know we appreciate their business. Then, contact Accounts Receivable. Have them issue a full refund on the customer’s delivery costs and send confirmation of the refund to them as well. Make sure the client is not charged for the new delivery either. And have Shipping expedite the new shipment and send tracking info to the customer. If you contact both departments by the end of today, Accounts Receivable should be done by Tuesday at the latest, and Shipping should have the package out the door with tracking by Wednesday.

The table below lists the relevant tasks and deadlines that need to be done to accomplish the stated goals.

Goal Task Due Date Status
Inform customer Email Renee Colon Monday To do
Inform relevant departments Contact Accounts Receivable (AR) Monday (end of day) To do
Contact Shipping Monday (end of day) To do
Refund customer AR issues refund to customer Tuesday To do
AR does not charge for replacement Tuesday To do
AR sends confirmation to customer Tuesday To do
Ship replacement package Package is expedited Wednesday To do
Tracking info sent to customer Wednesday To do

ASSIGNMENT: This assignment has two parts. The first part is to prepare a clear and concise email communication (no more than two paragraphs in the body of the email) to the customer that will inform them about the new delivery date and the refund to compensate for the inconvenience.

The second part is to communicate an internal plan regarding the refunding and redelivery of the shipment. You will draft a message to your colleagues in the Accounts Receivable and Shipping departments about the time frame of each task that clearly identifies who has which task and by what time it needs to be completed. You will need to select an appropriate tool to communicate this message to your colleagues and explain why this would be an effective tool for this purpose.

For this assignment, you will:
Demonstrate your ability to craft messages for the appropriate purpose, tone, structure, and audience.
Be sure to include all the important information you need to communicate.
Select an appropriate tool for workplace communication.
Edit your messages for organization and style, ensuring professionalism with respect to formatting, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Download the template below, which further breaks down the steps involved in this assignment. You will return the completed template as your Touchstone submission.
