In this class, it is very important to get going with your research. So please read my directions and familiarize yourself with the research resources it is referring to. Please do prepare questions for our session on February 28, with
Ari Gofman, our research librarian.

Regarding the proposal itself, here is what I expect:
Text plus references should between 300 and 500 words. Don’t use the upper limit unless it is necessary. A well-focused proposal does not have to be that long. Please provide
1. a clear brief explanation of what you have in mind;
2. then detail data that you might have already found;
3. explain why you think it is interesting, especially in the context of our class;
4. do detail any empirical investigation you have in mind, or a theoretical or computational one;
5. provide precise references, using your judgement as to how many to present, instread of trying to pad the proposal with too many references. In providing references, please use the suggestions in my directions. Within the text or footnotes, refer to a source as e.g. Ioannides (2013) — you obviously don’t have to refer to my work, this is an example. Then list alphabetically all the references at the end.
Regarding 4, don’t be surprised: students have done an amazing variety of topics in this class. And you will all see that it will be the case once again this year!

In the text “Blocking the Transmission of Violence,” you learned about the violence interrupters’ mission to act as mediators and prevent acts of revenge.
Do you think revenge is always misguided, or is it justified in some cases? Take a stand and using the text to support your ideas do you believe that revenge is or isn’t justifiable.

Your midterm exam is a critical literature review. I will ask you to respond to a particular prompt, which I will provide to you one week before the due date. I expect that you will review some of the social science literature we examine in class, as supplemented by complementary literature on similar topics. As we will have done in class, I expect you to utilize the existing literature’s theories and findings to compose an argument in response to the overall prompt. The midterm exam is an individual, solitary assignment; it should be completed without assistance from your classmates, or anyone else for that matter. If you have questions, you should ask me. Violation of this rule will result in a zero grade for this assignment, along with the initiation of the University’s academic integrity policy.

Your paper should be at least 1750 words, but no longer than 3000 words. While I do not have strong preferences on formatting, generally speaking the paper should be double-spaced, typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, with 1-inch margins. Please include page numbers. Please do not include any other header than your name and the date. If you are responding to one question from a set, please only indicate what number question you chose. You must consistently abide by a citation style (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) and include a works cited page that does not count toward the word count. If you write in google docs, please print/share a PDF and upload that version to Canvas.

Your midterm must be uploaded to Canvas by the prescribed date and time. Should you need assistance with your writing, I encourage you to utilize university resources.
Option 1: What shapes the level of judicial legitimacy in a society? To address this question, explain what judicial legitimacy is. Elaborate on the various theories of judicial legitimacy. What opportunities and constraints do courts face regarding their own legitimacy? Discuss the legitimacy literature with additional attention to judicial independence, democratic political participation, and street-level implementation of judicial decisions.

Your paper should include a description of the state-of-the-art in your
technology, a discussion of where the sources that you read believe the
technology is heading in the near future, and a discussion of how this
technology will affect the choices you would make if you were making purchase
recommendations for a client. Although there is room for personal opinion in
your paper, you must justify your conclusions.
The body of an analytic research paper should be 10 pages in
length and typed using the APA Guide.
Student projects distill fundamental
issues, discuss the various available solutions, discuss the benefits and
limitations of the available solutions, and provide a new solution and
justification. Student papers must state a thesis, and based on the research,
attempt to prove or disprove that thesis.
An adequate literature search will
include a few books and journal articles (or other relevant documents).
A search
of Internet documentation is required.
Students should develop a conclusion
which synthesizes the literature in such a way as to demonstrate new
knowledge.
Guidelines for the format of the paper are as follows:
The paper should be 10-12 pages of text in length. (This minimum and
maximum length should not include the title page, separate figures and tables,
or the list of references)
The paper should include a one paragraph abstract, an introduction, and a
conclusion – think as if you were writing for a professional journal;
The paper should use APA format.

Two-part question:
First, we all come to the idea of terrorism with preconceptions, conscious and unconscious. Do the lineages presented by Laqueur (1977) and Kumamoto (2014) confirm or challenge how you think about “terrorism” and what it is?
Second, Laqueur (1977) reserves the moniker “terrorism” for those that use “terror” systematically. Is this useful? Does he provide a clue as to why a group would resort to terror more systematically than another? What kinds of groups might this definition privilege, that is, which are less likely to be marked as terrorist by this approach?

Some discussion questions to include are (from pbs.org)
 Through a published schedule and set of guidelines, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) and public health officials recommend that every child receive certain
vaccinations by age 6. What are the benefits of this recommendation to public health
officials, to the community and to other children?
 Some parents and health care professionals question the CDC’s recommendations and
decide not to vaccinate their children, while others, like Jennifer Margulis, choose to
vaccinate their children along an alternative schedule. How might her decision affect both
her own children and others?
 In what ways is vaccination different from other types of personal health decisions?
Who should be involved in deciding whether children receive a specific vaccine?
 Should the government have the right to compel vaccination? Should parents have the
right to refuse it?

Compare point of view in Oates’ “Mark of Satan” and Galeano’s “The Story of the Lizard Who Had the Habit of Dining on His Wives.” Or you could compare “Mr. Green” and “Everything in This Country Must.” How do the authors prepare you for the endings and surprise you with them? (refer to the “POV” PowerPoint).

Directions:
Your essay must have a clear, direct thesis statement.
Refer to the material posted in the “Resources” Module for writing about literature. It is a valuable source for tips and examples.

Remember that the evidence for an argument about literature is first and foremost the literary text under analysis. As the reader is already familiar with the literary work, there is no need to include detailed plot summary (points will be deducted for this). A summary of events is not analysis.

You will need to use the primary texts and one authored outside source; i.e. a critical commentary. Use credible, authoritative source- NOT Wikipedia, dictionary.com, Sparknotes, Schmoop, encyclopedias, etc. If you have a question about whether a source is appropriate ask me or don’t use it. All references, including from the literary work, must be cited in the text and on a Works Cited page. Note course policies on plagiarism. I am very strict about you using MLA because learning an academic format for writing college papers is the first path against plagiarism.

Papers must be a minimum of 4 pages, double-spaced, standard one inch margins, and 12 pt. font. Papers must follow MLA format (direct link to Purdue Owl MLA is in RESOURCES). Works Cited page does not count in the minimum page count.

Papers should be written in third person –no “I,” no “you.” No contractions.

Grading Rubric:
60% completely answers or addresses the prompt; does not re-tell plot; successfully uses an essay structure (paragraphing, thesis statement, organization).

30% effective use of appropriate source and correct MLA formatting including in-text citations (to avoid plagiarism).

10% proper mechanics and grammar including fluidity, which means connecting your quotes to your words so it is clear to the reader what you mean.
DO NOT USE EXTERNAL SOURCE TO TALK ABOUT THE AUTHOR. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE.

Based upon the readings and lectures cover the Civil War Amendments, respond to the following.
Define incorporation and identify which of the First 10 Amendments have been incorporated. Be sure to include Amendments that have been partially incorporated. Why has the process of incorporation been so uneven since the 1920’s?

Students will select a book intended as a piece of transportation/public policy analysis and evaluate how well the document meets the professional standards of policy analysis. Your presentation should cover the policy process and address applicable theories that explain how your selected policy area (nonprofit leadership) is addressed in the course readings.

Select an existing organization whose practices exemplify superior leadership qualities. A good place to start your research is Fortune Magazine’s annual ranking of “The World’s Most Admired Companies”.
Within the selected organization, who is the major figure(s) that demonstrates high levels of quality leadership? What characteristics, traits, and behaviors does this individual(s) exhibit?
Does the organization’s culture firmly support the leader’s(s’) short- and long-term objectives and actions?
If the individual(s) left the organization, would it affect the firm’s growth, productivity, customers, employees, vendors, etc. Be specific in your examples.
What steps can the organization take to ensure that quality leadership practices are properly developed and executed in the future?
Guidelines for Written Assignments
You are required to submit a 5 to 7 page research paper on the topic listed above.
Find peer reviewed articles from online journals through the CUNY online library. You may access the library after logging into the main BlackBoard website.
The paper must include at least 2 academic citations from top management/business journals.
Articles from magazines such as Fortune, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, etc., are not acceptable. You may use such articles as supplementary resources to complement your research, but your 2+ core references MUST come from academic journals. You may also use your required textbook for supplementary materials.
Papers should be double-spaced / 1 inch margins / 12 point Times New Roman Font and submitted as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) document.
You must include a reference list at the end of your paper and cite your sources throughout using APA standards. If you have any questions on this format, please let me know.
