Your MIDTERM EXAM will be here before you know it. By the time you get there however, you should have all of your essays prepared and ready to go. On the day of the exam, you will have 3 hours (it is a “timed” exam) to cut and paste 1 or 2 of these essays in full, along with some short-answer essays. In other words, the essays that I don’t ask you, will be covered in a series of “short answer” questions.

All of these essays are designed to bring your information together and force you to come up with your own interpretation of events–supported by the facts, of course.

More importantly however, they are designed to see if you have read the LECTURES. Since you have already been tested on the textbook and articles, these essays must include information and interpretation from the lectures–not from your textbook or Google. I need to see the lectures in your essays.

Also, don’t forget that I am looking for a specific government policy, not just general language that talks about the behaviors:
For example, if you are looking at the assimilation of African Americans, you would need to discuss a piece of legislation from Radical/Congressional Reconstruction, because its goal was to assimilate the newly freed slave into a truly biracial society in the south.
If you are discussing racism towards the Native Americans, you could cite the deliberate destruction of the buffalo or perhaps the government’s outlawing of the Ghost Dance as a specific government policy that supported this racism.
And, if you were talking about the segregation of the New Immigrants, then the Ethnic communities carved out by the urban bosses would be a good example.
These are only suggestions and they are only 3 out of the 9 categories that I am asking you to discuss ~but I think you can get the idea from these 3 examples.

The Social Justice Ethical Analysis Paper assignment will provide you with an opportunity to use a social justice lens to think about and react to a public health problem of your choosing.

Several readings from Week 2 serve as resources for understanding what is meant by social justice and how to apply a social justice lens to public health problems (I HAVE ATTACHED SOURCES BELOW). As stated by Beauchamp, “Under social justice all persons are entitled equally to key ends such as health protection or minimum standards of income.” Gostin and Powers stated in Health Affairs, “Justice stresses the fair disbursement of common advantages and the sharing of burdens. It captures the twin moral impulses that animate public health: to advance human well-being by improving health and to do so particularly focusing on the needs of the most disadvantaged…Public health based on social justice gives rise to important policy imperatives such as improving the public health system, reducing socioeconomic disparities, addressing health determinants, and planning for health emergencies with an eye on the needs of the most vulnerable.” In addition, Gostin and Powers also say, “Social justice views all lives as having equal value, so there is a moral justification for fair allocation from a global perspective.”
