Music in Society and the World
This discussion allows you to consider your experience of music in our society and some examples music from around the world. It has been said that music is a universal language. Below are a few examples of music from around the world with differing functions. Listen to each piece and for each one talk about what things sound similar to music you already listen to and what things sound different. Try to include the materials of music in your discussion if you are able to. (Melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, types of instruments or voices used, dynamics, form, timbre, etc…) In addition to your own thoughts for each piece, also address whether you believe the function of each piece matches the sound your are hearing? Try to explain why or why not?
