Analyze a social welfare issue on a problem or concern presented in a recent newspaper or news magazine article. Your analysis or argument should be viable in the academic study of classical literature, that is, it should be open to debate, not obvious, and it should be based on evidence from the text, namely passages from Cicero; it should not be based on religious or irreligious truth claims (such as: ‘God exists // God does not exist, therefore ….’). In addition to, but not as a substitute for, evidence from the text itself, you’re welcome to bring in material from the intro and notes to Walsh’s edition of Cicero as well as material from Denova. Do not use unapproved online sources: no Wikipedia, Google, etc. The purpose of the assignment is for you to rely on your own critical reading and thinking skills to make your own analysis or argument. If you want to get into the present-day implications of your topic, what’s at stake, for whom, and so on, you definitely can, but be sure to hold that until the concluding paragraph or two; don’t lead with that.
-organization and flow. You should have a deliberate introduction, body, and conclusion. Each should consist of however many paragraphs are fitting. At the macro level, there should be a conscious sequence of elements, and this sequence should be intuitive to the reader. At the micro level, there should sign-posts to guide the reader (such as first/topic/bridge sentences, key terms and phrases, transitional terms and phrases, pointing words).
-citation and works-cited page. You should use MLA style for all citations, and you should cite your source/s in-text. Citations should be consistent. Source/s should be summarized, paraphrased, or quoted appropriately, and any quotations should be smoothly integrated into your writing. Keep direct quotes to a bare minimum; summarize or paraphrase instead, leaving as much room as possible for you and your analysis or argument.

Early in the history of Western art music, notation was sometimes quite vague and did not specify every aspect of a performance – there were a lot of choices left up to the performers. This means that two modern recordings of the exact same composition may actually vary quite a lot.

For your first longer paper, select a pair of recordings from the options at the bottom of this page, and write a paper of 1,000 words (MIN 900 words, MAX 1000 words) explaining some differences between the two recordings. Be specific, detailed, and use technical terms including meter, mode (major/minor), texture, musical device, and instrumentation wherever possible. You are not required to use external sources, but anything you quote from another author must be acknowledged with appropriate and accurate citations.
You will have to listen to the recordings a few times to get to know them properly and compare them closely.
First think of the similarities that are consistent through the recordings – these might be meter, mode, musical device, and texture. Take stock of these similarities and mention them.
Then listen to the differences. While listening, use the following questions to guide your notes on the differences between the recordings:

Answer ALL the questions! (when you discuss each question, you must include timeframes)
• What types of instruments/voices can you hear? Do they differ between the two recordings? Do the timbres differ between the recordings? (Tip: search online for the names of the performers to find out who they are, what they specialize in, and about the instruments they play or their voices.)
• For each moment you compare use timings to indicate when and what you are talking about. Also include specific terminology where appropriate like: meter, mode (major or minor), musical device and texture (i.e. are there moments you hear a bass framework or ostinato, when are they and are they in major or minor; are there moments where you hear homophony and other where you hear polyphony? where/when are they? etc…)
• Are the two recordings at the same pitch? Is one higher/lower than the other? (Tip: listen to the first couple of seconds of each recording to compare them.)
• Are the two recordings different speeds? Which is faster/slower? If there is a difference in speed, what effect does this have on the overall feel?
• Are there differences in the dynamics, articulations, and/or rhythms?
• Are there any substantial differences in the music they play? Does one of the recordings add an introduction, or other additional sections? (Tip: if you are comfortable reading music, search online for a copy of the music and follow it while listening to the two performances.)
• Does one recording add more ornaments to the melody lines than the other? Can you tell what the performers are adding?
• What is the overall difference in mood or effect between the recordings? What of the above elements contribute to this?
• Which of the recordings did you prefer, and why?
• Do not take up space with composer biography, performer biographies, or general background information (3 points). Be focused and discuss the recordings in detail. While discussing the recordings in your paper, refer to the two different recordings as “Recording 1” and “Recording 2” to save space.

This semester, we are reading Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime, his memoir of growing up mixed-race (a literal crime) in South Africa during apartheid and its aftermath. The book itself is a cultural artifact—it exemplifies much of his and our cultural values, which is why he so often references popular culture (in both South Africa and the United States). His humor, especially, is tied to cultural and language references.
Your task is to choose a cultural artifact (a book you’ve already read, a TV show or movie you watch/have watched, a work of art you admire, etc…choose something that has real significance to you and that truly engages you). The main themes in Noah’s book relate to race, gender, and class. Select ONE of these themes and apply it to the cultural artifact you have selected. Examine this artifact through the lens of that theme, like Noah does. Like Noah, explore the ways in which racism, sexism, OR classism (only one, not all three!) are revealed/explored/critiqued in your artifact. Include specific, concrete examples from that source.
You may want to seek outside support for this assignment, as dates of events, important names, and statistical data may be necessary. Remember that in this class, for all formal writing, you must follow proper MLA citation guidelines. You’ll need to use proper quoting, paraphrasing, and in-text citation, in addition to a properly-formatted Works Cited page at the end of the essay (more MLA details will be coming soon, so do your best with the information you have). Also keep in mind that no more than 20% of your text should come from outside information, so be careful not to lose your voice in all the information/evidence.

You will decide how many body paragraphs you need to support your claims, but each body should have a clear topic sentence and detailed support (remember your FRIENDs). Be as specific as possible and consider the significance of the language you use, especially. I’m looking for a clear thesis in your introduction, as well as a conclusion that leaves your reader thinking (that “So what?”). Even better would be a creative title that echoes your main ideas.
