Financial Conceptual

1. If a corporation’s bonds are unexpectedly given a downgrade (e.g., Moody’s lowers the rating on Brady Corp. Bonds to Baa from Aa), what do you expect will happen to the yield to maturity on Brady’s bonds?
2. What is a call feature in a debt issuance? Is this beneficial to the corporation issuing the bond, the bond investor, or both? Explain.
3. Assuming everything else is the same, which bond would have a lower coupon rate at issuance: one with a sinking fund provision or one without a sinking fund provision? Why?
4. What is the difference between the coupon rate of a bond and the yield to maturity of a bond? Which rate is more important and why?
5. What is a preemptive right as it relates to common stock? Which investor would value preemptive rights more, Benjamin Solowitz who owns .0001% of the shares of XYZ Inc., or Carl Icahn who owns 50.1% of the shares of XYZ Inc.? Why?
6. Why do firms accept underpricing of their initial public offerings (IPOs)?

Compare how the three system of allocation (market, command and tradition) answer the basic questions of production and distribution.

Market Allocation can be defined as an agreement where the competitors in the market divides the market into separate segments amongst themselves. In each of these segments the competing firms have a separate allocation of the specific customers that it intends to target in the market. It also comprises the particular products it intends to sell and the area where the sale is to be made. Command allocation generally comes under the banner of the command economy and is concerned with providing the basic necessities of lies and opportunities to all the members in the society. Here, the opportunities are provided equally with no bias made towards any other members.

Traditional allocation can be defined as the allocation in the

case of factory overheads that is based on the total volume of production amidst the resources that have been consumed. It also assesses the consumption of the labor hours, machine hours and so on. On a closer inspection of all of these factors it is evident that these three types of allocation helps create an idea of the production of goods and services and its distribution in the market. The production is determined by the traditional allocation that helps in determining the volume produced through the total labor hours worked by workers. On the other hand the distribution can be understood from the command allocation and market allocation where each provides a detailed idea regarding how the products are distributed in the economy.

First, give a brief summary of the writer’s argument (claim). What is the writer for or against?
Next, provide 2 main points (reasons) the author provides. Be sure to indicate if the reasons contain any rhetorical appeal (logos, ethos, or pathos).
Discuss 2 rhetorical devices the writer uses (alliteration, repetition, rhetorical question, emotionally-charged words, imagery, etc.) and comment about how you felt after reading each one.
Finally, evaluate the author’s argument. Was the argument effective? Why or why not?

W5 HBR Change Journal Review

This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin®.
ARTICLE: https://hbr.org/2005/10/the-hard-side-of-change-management

Following are the instructions by profesor, please follow them closely.
Select Harvard Business Review Journal Articles you are assigned to read and complete the following assignment for one of the articles. Submit your paper to the Brightspace drop box.
For your selected HBR Journal Article, complete a 1 to 1.5-page summary (Times Roman 12 single-space): Identify the core concepts in each journal article by listing and defining the concepts in your own words and self-reflect on what you learned. The papers should be organized, well-written, and represent a true interaction with the course material and not simply a rephrasing of course text material. Your personal opinions, experiences, parallels and responses are the objective, using the guiding questions below:
What I learned that I can apply to my own understanding of change management
What I learned that I can/will use or incorporate into my organization
What I learned that changed my thinking on leading change or areas that I do not understand or disagree
Come to class prepared to discuss
Your HBR Change Journal Review will be your talking points for the class discussion. You should be prepared to present, defend, and educate us on your perspectives. Your participation points will come largely from these discussions.

Discourse community essay

Your Discourse community:- Church
Discourse Community Analysis
– Your claim: you are a member of your DC
– Examining your own experiences in your chosen DC through
ethos, pathos, and logos
– Purpose: to persuade/convince your audience that your
claim is True
– Rhetorical Situation:
o Audience – the class and instructor
o Speaker – you
o The text – an essay on your experiences in your chosen
DC
– Using the Rhetorical Appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos)
– Your proof will consist of real-life examples/experiences
o Then provide analysis of how that works
– You may write about a past experience
– Body paragraphs: ethos, pathos, logos, naysayer
– 4 to 5 pages
– MLA style
– No external research
– No citations
– A rough draft is NOT the first draft
– A first draft MUST be complete, polished, gradable (think of
it as a final draft)

As you prepare a draft that you’ll share with readers, begin
with an introduction (which need not be limited to a single
paragraph) that accomplishes three goals:
• Acknowledges what “they say” (see Ch. 1)
• Provides an “I say” (see Ch. 4)
• Answers the “so what?” and “who cares?” questions (see Ch. 7)
For this paper, the “they say” is not a view you’re agreeing with
or disagreeing with. Rather, it’s simply the conversation we’ve
been having about rhetoric and discourse communities. Begin
by summarizing some of what we’ve been discussing.
Your “I say” will be your thesis statement, in which you claim
that you successfully joined your discourse community because
you mastered its ethos, pathos, and logos appeals.
The answer to the “who cares?” question is you, your classmates,
and I. To answer the “so what?” question, explain to us why we
should keep reading, why the experiences you’ll share with us tell
us something interesting about rhetoric and discourse communities.
Once you have an introduction in place, it’s up to you to decide
how to shape and organize the content you’ve drafted. Just
make sure you have discrete sections for ethos, pathos, logos,
and your response to the naysayer.
choosing an appropriate style
Your style should be informal yet clear, retaining your own voice
but making accommodations for the rest of us (see Ch. 9).
Paper 1: Discourse Community Analysis
I do insist that you use paragraphs, simply because they make
things easier on readers. A strong paragraph usually includes a
clear topic sentence that is supported by sentences that cluster
around it without going off on tangents.
You don’t need to adhere strictly to Standard English, but
don’t be sloppy. Proofread carefully to ensure that your paper
reads the way you want it to and that you’ve corrected unintentional errors.

Teach a computer to play a game

For this assignment, you are required to develop the outline of a cognitive system that allows a computer to learn
how to play CandyCrush game. Please go to https://king.com/game/candycrush to learn about the game and how to
play it, that is if you do not know how to play it already. Download the game, either on your iPhone, or other
Smartphone or if you do not have a smartphone, use the on-line at link above to play the game.
Now here is what you want to do.
1. You need to recruit at least 2 people who do NOT know how to play this game. They can be your friends,
family, neighbors, classmates, lovers or whoever.
2. Let each of your recruits have fun with the game for about 30 minutes. Let them explore the game to learn
the rules. Do not help them in figuring out the rules. Let them try it to figure the rules of the game for
themselves.
3. Observe them during these 30 minutes. Write down what they are doing and how are they learning how to
play? What are the exact activities that they are using to learn how to play the game?
4. Once the initial 30 minutes learning phase has passed and they are comfortable playing the game, let them
play as long as they want to have fun on their own. This step is meant to increase their expertise on how to
play the game. You can let them play and come back later to continue with this assignment.
5. Give them a day or so after they have learned the game and have gained enough “expertise”. Then ask them
two broad sets of questions:
a. Ask them to describe how they learned to play the game. Let them describe the process they used in
their own words. Did they use any specific strategies? If so, what were they? How did they come up
with these strategies? Let them explain exactly the steps they used to come up with that strategy? Note
how they articulate that strategy? Are they able to it, or do they have a hard time describing them?
b. Now ask them to describe the rules they have learned about how to play the game. Record their
answers. Do not ask them how they feel about the game rather how they play the game. Make sure they
describe the rules of the game as they understood them. Note how they describe and articulate the rules.
This step is very crucial. Are they specific in describing the rules or vague? Would you consider their
descriptions of the rules useful to some one who does not know how to play the game but wants to
learn, why or why not? Do you remember Polanyi’s paradox: ‘We can know more than we can tell’?
Do you see it in action here?
6. Record what they said in parts 5.a and 5.b. Please comment on the usefulness of what they described as the
basis of developing an algorithm that can be used to program a computer to play this game. Please note that
an algorithm is a set of instructions to the computer that tells the computer exactly and in step by step
detailed instructions what to do in order to solve the problem. A computer cannot understand instructions
that are not exact, they have to be specific and in the right sequence. For example, computers do not
understand if you were to say things like “you know” or “you click here” or “you just do this”. The
instructions must exact and step and step using standard language.
7. Compare the two sets of instructions that you received from your recruits, in parts 5a. and 5b. Grade the two
independently in terms of their usefulness as a training tool for a computer. What criteria did you use to
grade each? Did one recruit grade higher than the other? Why? What role do you think the recruiter’s
background, if any played in their scores?
8. In a written report of at least 5 pages long, describe any specific cognitive processes that were used in this
exercise and comment on the overall machine learning process by which you could use to develop a program
to train a computer to learn something you want it to learn, in this case to play CandyCrush.

“It is interesting to note that even in prehistoric times, the autochthonous peoples of Indochina seem to have lacking in creative genius and showed little for making progress without stimulus from outside.” (George Coedes)
“The thesis rejects the orthodox view of an historical “Indianisation” of Southeast Asia in favor of emphasizing a continuity of indigenous cultural forms and ritual from pre-Angkorean times.” (Paul Cravath)
“Southeast Asia has been identified, on the basis of superficial similarities, with India.”
“Hinduism and Islam were a thin, easily flaky glaze on the massive body of Indigenous civilization.” (Wilhelm G. Solheim)
