Music Resources on the Web

Overview
In this assignment, you’ll be searching for ten different music resources online that may be of use to you as the semester progresses.
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations of different types of documents like books, articles, or even sound recordings. An annotated bibliography not only informs your reader of the quality, accuracy and effectiveness of each source, but will also provide you, the writer, with information that may be of use in a research project. In this case, your citations should help you with subjects covered in this course.
To start your paper, you should assemble a list of 10 websites that will be useful to you as you research different musical subjects in this class.
Subjects might include the following:
copyright legal sources for music listening
different fields of musical study such as music theory, musicology, and ethnomusicology
guides to different types of live music in the area where you live like classical concerts, jazz performances, rock concerts, folk concerts, and children’s concerts; and
any other sites that you think might come in handy when you do your research for the upcoming papers in this class, like music from a country in your own cultural background.

Assemble your bibliographic citations.
Make sure you alphabetize your citations by the last name of the author and the title.
Then, write your assessment of each website. This should include the following:
a summary of the information provided on the site
an assessment of the quality, accuracy, and effectiveness of the site
a reflection on how the site may be helpful to a music appreciation student like yourself
include a discussion on why Wikipedia and YouTube are not appropriate sources for academic papers.
Finish your paper by writing an introduction, which will help your reader understand the information that your bibliography is providing. The introduction will go at the very beginning of your paper.A conclusion at the end of your paper will wrap up your main points.
This assignment should be at least 1000 words in length.
Originality checking (Turnitin) is enabled for this assignment. It automatically checks the internet for text that has been cut and pasted from other sources. Papers with significant amounts of copied material will lose significant points. Anything that is cut and pasted into your paper should be clearly identified as a direct quote.

GOLDEN AGE OF ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION

1)Based on your readings, lectures, and the film “The Message,” identify and
explain some of the fundamental Islamic beliefs and values that are in sharp
contrast to those that existed in the pre-Islamic period (called the Jahiliyya in
Arabic). You must discuss at least five such beliefs and values in detail.
Be sure to refer to as many relevant readings as you can and clearly indicate the
source of your information, either as an in-text citation or as a footnote or endnote.
2) In a concluding paragraph, express your personal assessment of the film “The
Message” and evaluate how well it was able to convey some of the information
that you have obtained from the readings. Are there some details that you have
picked up through your readings that are missing or could have been emphasized
more in the film? Or, did the film convey information or a nuance that is missing
from the readings?
When referencing the reading assignments, you must mention the author, brief title
of work cited, and page number/s. You only need to refer to assigned readings, so
a full bibliography is not necessary for them. You may not consult with anyone
else – your essay must reflect your own words and effort.
You will be evaluated on the quality and depth of your analysis, your ability to
back up your statements with reference to appropriate readings, lectures, and
content of the film, style of expression and proper use of the English language,
including spelling and punctuation. Writing style should be formal so avoid
colloquialisms (slang expressions). Please proofread your paper carefully and
save a copy of it.

“The Ghost Map” by Steven Johnson – Book Review

How to Write a Book Review (From http://www.shoestringbranding.com)

In a nutshell, here are some tips on how to write a book review:
A book review has three objectives:
Describing what the book is about
Analyzing how the book tried to achieve its purpose
Expressing your own opinion of the book
As you read the book, try to answer the following three questions:
What are the author’s objectives? What is he/she trying to prove? (These will often be stated in the introduction)
What kind of evidence/experience does the author use/have to prove his or her points?
Is the evidence convincing?
When you start writing your review, state the book’s main thesis and present some background information on the author.

Next, give a summary of the main points/sections of the book, quoting and paraphrasing key phrases from the author if necessary.

Finally, get to the heart of the matter—your opinion of the book. In this section, you can discuss several issues:

How well has the book has achieved its goal
What the book has left out
How the book compares to others on the subject
What specific points are well sustained and what is not convincing, and
How does the content relates to you and your field
It is important to carefully distinguish your views from the author’s, so that you don’t confuse your reader.
Optionally, you may finish your review with a conclusion that ties together the issues raised in the review and provides a concise comment on the book.

Comparable students today, however, have been entirely absorbed into the social debt structure. It most of all organizes their lives. Students are now by majority at work, at least part time, and largely unprotected, with everything to lose.

Please write 1-2 pages (250-500 words) in response to the following.

In “A New Type of Human Being and Who We Really Are,” Robert Hullot-Kentor writes:

Comparable students today, however, have been entirely absorbed into the social debt structure. It most of all organizes their lives. Students are now by majority at work, at least part time, and largely unprotected, with everything to lose.

What do you make of this statement, both in the context of its place in the essay (Hullot-Kentor’s description of the absence of opposition or change in US society) and from your position as, presumably, one of these students? How does it affect you?

In no more than one sentence, explain what guarantees the United States did or did not make to the nations of Latin America in the Monroe Doctrine.

Do all of the following.
In no more than one paragraph, explain the major principles enunciated in the Monroe Doctrine regarding the appropriate relationship between the nations of the Old World and those of the New World.
In practical terms, it was British naval power more than anything else that would prevent France, Spain, or other European powers from establishing or acquiring new colonies in the New World. In no more than two sentences, explain why the United States rejected Canning’s suggestion of a joint British-American agreement regarding colonization in the New World.
In no more than one sentence, explain what guarantees the United States did or did not make to the nations of Latin America in the Monroe Doctrine.

Hepatitis c infection and Dialysis

Hepatitis C is a chronic liver infection that can be either silent (with no noticeable symptoms) or debilitating. Either way, 80% of infected persons experience continuing liver destruction. Chronic hepatitis C infection is the leading cause of liver transplants in the United States. The virus that causes it is blood borne, and therefore patients who undergo frequent procedures involving transfer of blood are particularly susceptible to infection. Kidney dialysis patients belong to this group. In 2008, a for-profit hemodialysis facility in New York was shut down after nine of its patients were confirmed as having become infected with hepatitis C while undergoing hemodialysis treatments there between 2001 and 2008.
When the investigation was conducted in 2008, investigators found that 20 of the facility’s 162 patients had been documented with hepatitis C infection at the time they began their association with the clinic. All the current patients were then offered hepatitis C testing, to determine how many had acquired hepatitis C during the time they were receiving treatment at the clinic. They were considered positive if enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests showed the presence of antibodies to the hepatitis C virus.
Health officials did not test the workers at the hemodialysis facility for hepatitis C because they did not view them as likely sources of the nine new infections. Why not?
Why do you think patients were tested for antibody to the virus instead of for the presence of the virus itself?
