What do the authors claim as the major finding of the study?

Article Reading Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to read a research article (Seli et al., 2019) in detail, write a full summary and begin to critique the article. Seli et al. (2019) studied the relationship of depression, anxiety and stress with intentional and unintentional mind wandering.
Start by reading the first sentence of every paragraph in the entire paper. This strategy reveals the most important parts of the study – purpose, hypothesis, method, statistics, results and conclusions – and provides structure for a detailed reading.
Next, read the questions for the introduction, read the introduction and note the answers as you find them. Do the same for all four main sections of the article.
Finally, write the summary of the full article.Use APA format for the page layout (1” margins, 12 point font, double space between all lines, and no extra spaces between paragraphs). Write in full paragraphs and include details from the article but without using wording directly from the article or repeating the questions. Cite the article once in the beginning of the summary using the exact APA format demonstrated in the first paragraph of these instructions. The grade depends on how well you describe the research in your own words and how well you follow APA format for citations and layout.
Detailed Summary
This summary will include some detail and be no more than 2 pages long. Write in normal paragraphs and incorporate the answers to as many of the questions in each section as you can. Not all the questions will work for every article.
Reading the Introduction
Identify the main topic of the study.
Why was the research done?
What was the goal or purpose of the research? [Hint: do not summarize their entire rationale for doing their study, instead simply describe their main goal].
How does this study increase knowledge about the area of study?
If they tested a specific theory, describe it briefly.
Describe the hypotheses or research questions.
Reading the Method [Correlational Study]
[HINT: Keep a list of variable names while you read so you understand their abbreviations]
Very briefly, describe the participants (describe this without using any numbers).
What constructs or variables were measured [ignore demographic information like age and gender]?
How were the variables operationally defined? [This is the most important information]
Were the participants treated ethically?
If you were a participant in the study, could you figure out what the study was about and maybe influence the results?
Was there anything else you needed to know about the method and procedures?
How well do you think the goals or purpose of the study was met by their method
3. Reading the Results
Before writing a summary of the result, be sure you understand the variables – describe what the highest score possible on each variable tells us about a person. If that is not clear, re-read the method section and be sure you understand the main variables.
Summarize the results section as clearly as possible using these questions as a guide. Only include the results that you determine to be the most important. Do not include ANY numbers– just use words to describe their results.
HINT: Use Tables as well as the text. Read the Title of the Table, then the Note below the Table and look for any significant effects.
Descriptive statistics [Table 1]
Identify the types of descriptive statistics measured in the study.
Using Table 1, and without using any numbers, describe the participants’ behaviors and characteristics. For example, how much did they mind wander and how depressed were they?
2. Correlational statistics [Table 2]
Name the correlational statistic used in the analyses.
Describe two statistically significant correlations between mind wandering and an emotion that you find interesting [without using any numbers].
3. Partial correlation coefficients [Table 3]
Look at the same two correlations you described above – are they statistically significant in the partial correlation table?
Is the hypothesis supported by the data in Table 3? Explain why or why not.
4. Reading the Discussion
What do the authors claim as the major finding of the study?
What did they find that was unexpected and how do they explain differences between what they expected and what they found?
What flaws or limitations do the authors discuss?
What are the authors’ main conclusions?

The First World War and the use of propaganda

Introductory Paragraph
Grab the reader’s attention by using a “hook.”
Give an overview of the argument.
Close with a thesis statement that reveals the position to be argued.
Body Paragraphs
Each body paragraph should focus on one piece of evidence.
Within each paragraph, provide sufficient supporting detail.
Concluding Paragraph
Restate and reinforce the thesis and supporting evidence.

Immigrant Interview Person

Immigration is a topic that brings out strong opinions on all sides of the issue. Many times, however, we discuss immigration in the abstract without really thinking of the people impacted by our perspectives. For this assignment, I would like you to interview an immigrant (someone not born in the U.S.) and ask them about their immigrant experience. You can ask questions like why did they come here, how did they come here, have they experience racism, how do they view the U.S. and many more. The objective is to learn about their story. You can interview a family member, friend, or co-work as long as they were not born in the U.S. but are living here now. You are to write a short essay summarizing their perspective/story.
Essay Requirements
Provide a 1.5 to 2-page (but no more) essay that provides an overview of an immigrant’s experience (do NOT provide question and answer format, it needs to be an essay).
For the first paragraph, you can provide basic demographic information to get a sense of who the person is, age, where they came from, relationship to you, etc (first name only-information will be kept confidential).
The body of the essay should consist of several themes that emerged from your interview, what stood out to you, what was insightful, what did you learn from the interview, etc.

IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) and the IEP (Individualized Education Program) Process

Assessment Description

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that specific topics be covered in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting. The IEP team consists of general education
teachers, special education teachers, a psychologist or counselor, administrators,
parents/guardians, speech therapist, occupational therapist, and on occasion, the student and
student advocate. Typically, a special education teacher serves as the case manager and is
responsible for inviting attendees to the meeting and coordinating the meeting according to
policies and regulations. Effective communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, and
data-driven decision-making are all prerequisites to facilitating a successful IEP meeting. Often, a school district will provide a checklist for teams to follow when developing and discussing the IEP
to help ensure all responsibilities are met.

View “FIEP: A Facilitated IEP Meeting,” paying special attention to the structure and collaborative
nature of the meeting, the specific components of the IEP, and ways that the meeting
demonstrates adherence to laws and ethical principles that govern special education. Note when viewing this example meeting that the administrator is the facilitator rather than the special
education teacher, who would typically lead the meeting.

In a 1,000-1,250 word essay, articulate your knowledge of IDEA and the IEP process. The essay
should address the following:

Summarize IDEA. Include discussion of professional practice standards and how these are used to guide the special education teacher in ensuring key components of the law such as free
appropriate public education (FAPE), appropriate evaluation, least restrictive environment (LRE),
and procedural safeguards are upheld (approximately 250 words).

Explain the importance of collaboration between members of the IEP team. Include discussion
about who should be included on the IEP team, how parents and students participate in
decision-making, which IEP team members’ attendance is required and which is optional, and how CEC Ethical Principles and Professional Practice Standards guide collaboration and execution of
the IEP process (approximately 250 words).

Describe the IEP process. Explain what IDEA indicates must be done before, during, and after an
IEP meeting. Include discussion of why executing the IEP process according to the established
standards is essential to avoid due process disputes (approximately 250-500 words).

Identify the major components of the IEP and explain why each is important. Discuss the specific
legal, ethical, and policy responsibilities related to developing the IEP to ensure it meets the
educational, developmental, and medical services requirements for students with disabilities and
their families. (approximately 250 words)
Consider what you saw in “FIEP: A Facilitated IEP Meeting” and describe the key takeaways you
will consider as a new teacher participating in the IEP process
(approximately 100 words).

****Support the essay with a minimum of three scholarly resources.****

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the
Student Success Center.

‘Tweet’ Assignment

For this assignment, you should submit a tweet-length string of characters (i.e., 280 characters or fewer, including whitespace and punctuation) which summarises the thesis (i.e., the main point or argument) of the Van Wynsberghe & Robbins article that was assigned for Week 5 (“Critiquing the Reasons for Making Artificial Moral Agents”, Science and Engineering Ethics, 2019). A sample submission, summarising Amodei et al. (2016), is given below.
Some additional information about (1) what thesis statements are, and (2) what tweets are, and (3) the connection between them is provided here: https://www.kibin.com/essay-writing-blog/writing-a-thesis-statement-twitter/, if you need further guidance on how to get started.
Most important is that a good thesis statement has the following properties:
It is focused and specific.
It is debatable.
It is intruiging.
This assignment is subject to the following restrictions:
You must upload the assignment through Brightspace in .pdf or .docx format.
Do NOT include your name anywhere in your submission. All assignments will be graded anonymously.
Your submission must be the length of a ‘tweet’—i.e., fewer than 280 characters.
Note : whitespace and punctuation are counted as ‘characters’.
Your submission must be a summary of the Van Wynsberghe and Robbins reading.
Your submission should not include any quotations whatsoever. Everything should be your own words (i.e., you should be paraphrasing rather than quoting).
You must include appropriate citations, and a complete works cited (which, in this case, should only include reference to Van Wynsberghe and Robbins). The works cited must be properly formatted.
Note 1 : the ‘works cited’ does not count toward the total number of characters.
Note 2 : a properly-formatted citation for this article is included in the syllabus.
Since this is a very short assignment, your submission should be completely free of typographical and grammatical mistakes—i.e., you should spend some time editing before you submit.
You do not need to include any information in the submission other than the ‘tweet’ and the works cited.
5 marks will be given for a clear, accurate, error-free, 280-or-fewer character summary of the main claim(s) of Van Wynsberghe and Robbins (2019).
0.5 marks will be deducted for minor grammatical or typographical errors.
1 mark will be deducted for major grammatical or typographical errors which detract from understanding.
1 mark will be deducted if any quotations are included in the ‘tweet’.
1 mark will be deducted if the ‘tweet’ inaccurately represents the main thesis of the paper.
1 mark will be deducted for reference to anything other than the Van Wynsberghe and Robbins article.
Summarising any paper other than Van Wynsberghe and Robbins will receive a 0.
0.5 marks will be deduced for inaccurately formatted citations.
Late submissions are subject to the policy outlined in the syllabus (i.e., -2 marks for each 24-hour period after the deadline) Recall that the deadline for submission is 11 February 2022 at 23:59 Atlantic time.
SAMPLE ASSIGNMENT
The following is one possible submission, if the assignment were on Amodei et al. (2016).
Amodei et al. (2016) discuss the possibility of accidents—i.e., unintended consequences that might arise from misspecified objective functions—in machine learning and real-world AI systems, providing concrete examples and suggestions for how we might safeguard against them.
Some things worth noting about this example, that you might consider when writing your own summary of Van Wynsberghe and Robbins’ paper:
The summary is clear and specific. It captures the main point of Amodei et al.’s article.
The summary is 274 characters, including whitespace and punctuation (i.e., it is under the limit of 280 characters).
There are no quotations. The point that Amodei et al. make is paraphrased in original wording.
There are no grammatical or typographical errors.
Amodei et al.’s paper is properly cited, and a ‘works cited’ is included after the summary (this does not count toward the 280 characters).
A technical term (‘accidents’) is introduced, and then immediately defined.
It happens that this summary of Amodei et al. is one sentence; however, there is no restriction on the number of sentences that you use to specify the thesis of the paper—the only restriction on form is that the submission is under 280 characters (including whitespace and punctuation).

Based on your research, does your country have an absolute advantage in any area of international trade? If so, please describe this advantage and explain why you think they have this characteristic.

Assignment: We Do It Better Here
This assignment requires you to research a country’s trade advantages within the global economy. In order to successfully complete this assignment, please follow these instructions carefully.
Select a Country
Research
Begin by going to the Global Edge website of Michigan State University. At the Home Page, click on “Global Insights,” which will take you to the page where you can search by Trade Bloc, Country, State, and Industry. Select “Country” from the drop-down menu and begin to find out about your country. Other sources you may want to consider are the U.S. Department of State website —see “Countries and Regions” from the menu at the top of the home page.
Consider
Based on your research, does your country have an absolute advantage in any area of international trade? If so, please describe this advantage and explain why you think they have this characteristic.
Remember: Absolute advantage is the ability of a country, individual, company, or region to produce a good or service at a lower cost per unit than the cost at which any other entity produces that good or service.
Based on your research, does your country have comparative advantages?
Remember: Comparative advantage refers to the ability of a party to produce a particular good or service at a lower marginal and opportunity cost over another. Even if one country is more efficient in the production of all goods compared to the other, both countries will still gain by trading with each other, as long as they have different relative efficiencies.
Write
Prepare a written summary of your findings – at least one paragraph per topic below. This must be uploaded as a Word or PDF document. Include the following information in your summary:
An overview of the country you selected
The advantage you identified (absolute or comparative)
Explanation and justification for making the decision you made
Include a Works Cited page at the end with at least 2 scholarly sources (not Wikipedia etc.) in MLA or APA format

Slavery in America

You need to answer this question:

“How did slave owners justify owning slaves? Root your arguments in logic, primary sources, and a sincere critique of the question”.

Task 1: Create a new discussion topic on or before the required date/time. Develop a substantive main thread addressing each part of the prompt in full. Your initial thread should be 2-3 paragraphs in length (200+ words total). Support your points with examples or illustrations from the text. Quotations/citations are not strictly required, but APA style should be used if quoting or paraphrasing from the literature or outside sources.
Use Educational sources only.

Wasting Time on the Internet, “Let’s Get Lost” Kenneth Goldsmith’s

Format: Refer to the syllabus. (Make sure you have a proper header, a catchy title, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and indent each new paragraph.)
Read and annotate Kenneth Goldsmith’s chapter from Wasting Time on the Internet, “Let’s Get Lost” (handed out in class and posted to Moodle). Write an essay that accomplishes two things:
1) Identifies Goldsmith’s argument, then frames that argument within the seven requirements of successful persuasive writing handed out in class.

2) Analyze how well his argument persuades you as a reader. Do you agree with Goldsmith’s assessment regarding the Internet? Be sure to explain your reasoning through your own personal experience.
Your opening paragraph should explain your theory of argument and then transition into a thesis statement that sums up your analysis of how well the essay meets your standards. Identify the author and his essay’s title within your opening paragraph. From then on, you may refer to the author by his or her last name. The body paragraphs of the essay should address and analyze the three primary components of argumentative essays: claim, evidence, and counterargument.
You must quote at least three times from the essay in order to demonstrate your points. When you quote from the essay, do an in-text citation that identifies the page number. It would look something like this:
Goldsmith argues that the Internet has fragmented our sense of selfhood. He explains how, “Online, I am me and not me at the same time,” which I (have also)/(have not) experienced in my own screen time (19).
Since you are only addressing one argumentative essay, I do not need a Works Cited entry. Again, please identify the author’s full name and title of the essay within the first paragraph and provide in-text citations when you either quote or paraphrase from his/her essay.
