Basket Ball Guide For Women

Unit 2 Activity: Basket Ball Guide For Women, 1916-1917
In chapter 2, Schultz discusses the history of women’s sport, including the introduction of basketball for girls and women. She writes:
In 1892, one year after Naismith invented basketball, Senda Berenson introduced the sport at Smith College. Basketball quickly became popular and spread throughout the country’s colleges, high schools, Young Women’s Christian Associations (YWCAs), and settlement homes. At the first official women’s intercollegiate basketball game in 1896 (University of California vs. Stanford University), physical educators worried about “rough and vicious” play.6 Consequently, leaders adapted the game for girls and women, confining players’ movement to designated zones and limiting, if not eliminating, physical contact between competitors. (pp 14-15).
The rest of the chapter discusses how there were paradoxical arguments for the inclusion of sport for girls and women. Some argued that it benefited women and girls in much the same way sports provided important lessons for boys and men. Others argued that it hurt women in multiple ways.
Task: After completing the Unit 2 readings, examine a source from the 1916-1917 Basket Ball Guide for Women. The Spalding company issued these guides each year with updated rules for the sport (remember, the sport had only been invented a few decades before this!) and short articles from practitioners in physical education.
This source, titled “Basket Ball Upon the Playground” was written by Edward B. De Groot, who was an official with the Playground Association of Chicago. In the essay he discusses how women and girls should play basketball outside at playgrounds, rather than in a gymnasium like boys and men.
After reading this source, write 150-200 words reflecting on the following:
What benefits for girls and women does De Groot see in basketball (or sport in general)?
What negatives for girls and women does De Groot see in basketball (or sport in general)?
What’s an example where De Groot says something that you don’t think is true today?
***Remember, this was written by someone over 100 years ago! Pay close attention to how ideas and thoughts about girls and women in sport have changed.***

Explain and evaluate the outcomes of the practice decisions/changes based on evidence.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) projects are undertaken to address clinical problems that healthcare providers face in the workplace. This may be a hospital, clinic, community or home settings, schools, or anywhere care is provided.
EBP enhances nurses’ abilities to solve problems that they encounter in their work lives. Although there are numerous nursing EBP Models, there are 7 key steps that are followed:
Step 0: Cultivate a spirit of inquiry
Step 1: Ask clinical questions in PICOT format
Step 2: Search for the best evidence
Step 3: Critically appraise the evidence
Step 4: Integrate the evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences & values
Step 5: Explain and evaluate the outcomes of the practice decisions/changes based on evidence.
Step 6: Disseminate EBP results
Clinical nurses at all stages of their careers are team members in evidence-based practice projects. Usually teams are multi-disciplinary, including pharmacists, physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and others.
In new RN Residency or New Graduate programs, you will be part of an EBP project Team.
In this course, you will complete a semester-long EBP Project Simulation with a team that you choose. You will participate in Steps 0-4 from #2. The ability to function in teams is needed in nursing. All students contribute to teamwork but every student will have a lead role for one part of the project.
It is expected that Leads ensure the team is completing high-quality, timely work. Leads should contact the Professor if a team member is not engaging with the team.
A clinical setting and care problem are assigned by the instructor (See #9). Together with your team you will develop an EBP question based on the clinical problem, search the literature for answers, and propose an evidence-based solution to improve client or nursing outcomes in your clinical setting.
We use modified Johns Hopkins Nursing Model EBP Tools + an electronic Poster Presentation for this Simulation

Simulation Scenarios: All Simulation scenarios are in the table below. Teams are assigned one practice setting with its identified clinical problem.

Where do you think our ideas about families today come from?

Watch the clip:The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap with Stephanie Coontz.

How have relationships with parents and children changed since the 1960s? Refer to the textbook for this answer. I need to see that you have used information from the textbook for this assignment. Please cite your work.

In the last paragraph, discuss three things from the YouTube clip that you learned/found interesting/surprising.

What recommendations do you propose to deal with this idea or problem?

Designing Your Final Project
Brainstorming
Brainstorm ideas for your final project. You may use your current employer, a former employer you would like to research for this project. Identify a problem that exists within the organization or an idea that you would like to see implemented that will require organizational change.
Begin creating your rough draft of your final paper using the following as your headings (highlighted in bold):
Company Overview (Company name and other information that will be important to the reader of your final report). Include the organization structure and company culture in this section.
Current Leader’s traits/style.
Problem Statement. What problem or idea will you attempt to solve or address?
Organization’s current culture and identify areas to improve. Express the preferred organizational culture as a result of the change process.
Key leadership qualities that your organization will need in leading the company in change.
Options for dealing with this problem or idea?
Recommendations – What recommendations do you propose to deal with this idea or problem? How should the organization’s leaders lead the change process?
Implementation Plan – How the proposed change will be implemented

Assignment Deliverable
You will provide a minimum of 3 full pages from above. Support your work with academic literature in the form of APA formatted cites and references. This means that you will have a heading for each of the highlighted items above, a section for your Scholarly Resources List (in APA format), and then finish the paper off with the APA formatted references at the end (on its own page).
