CASE STUDY

Alan Sharpman, director of the stroke recovery unit at Barrymore Rehabilitation Center (BRC), closed his office door and sighed. Most of the time, he liked his work. Helping someone lead as normal a life as possible after a stroke was gratifying. Most of the time, the organizational culture worked well with an emphasis on independent individuals working together as a team. The team members were smart and worked independently without needing Alan’s assistance; this allowed Alan to use a laissez-faire style of leadership which was comfortable for him.
The BRC patients exerted great effort to recover and always seemed to express appreciation for Alan’s and his staff’s help in the rehabilitation process.
The staff at BRC functioned as interprofessional teams that focused on the individual therapy of each patient. Barr were divided into interprofessional teams that focused on each individual’s therapy. A nurse, a speech pathologist, an audiologist, a physical therapist (PT), and an occupational therapist (OT) would come together to plan, implement, and evaluate the specific rehabilitation treatment for a patient. The team members, who came from about the same hierarchical level, worked together to help the patient recover. “Restore the body, empower the spirit” is a philosophy to which the team members subscribed. That is, they subscribed to it most of the time.
Alan sighed again and said to himself, “Today is not one of those times.”
The audiologist Sam Turner; a nurse, Susan Baker; and the speech pathologist, Sara Ayers all had approached him to discuss the behavior of two of their interdisciplinary team members: John Sanducci who was a PT and Tom Mallory who was an OT.
John was one of the first PTs hired at BRC thirty years ago; he is well respected and knows the unit’s procedures better than anyone. He is often sought by other PTs for advice and is extremely conscientious about staying up-to-date on treatments and protocols. He is often heard saying to the staff how much he likes helping patients, “restore the body and empower the spirit.”
Tom, a 26-year-old, is the newest employee at BRC and is a recent graduate from the local university’s OT program. BRC is Tom’s first full-time employment. Tom has bundles of energy and is full of ideas; he is always ready to take on the next task. He gets so excited but it is difficult to get him to stop talking so others can talk.
Sara had explained that although each of these guys (John and Tom) were great to work with individually, they cannot seem to get along with each other.
Sam told Alan that when Tom and John work on the same team they cannot agree on anything. It seems if Tom, recommends anything, John opposes it. And it is difficult for John to get a word in so when he does get a chance to say anything, he usually just shouts at Tom.
Susan added, “we told them to stop fighting and get back to discussing the patient,” and they both just refused to participate. Susan lamented that, “We are just so frustrated with the time wasted. We are not accomplishing as much as we could.”

What is your reaction to the court’s ruling in this case, based on the information made available?

“Because no one should ever die making a movie.” –pledgetosarah.org
When organizing a film or video production during the Pre-Production process, there are many components to plan for: budgets, schedules, permits, releases, gear rental, casting, contracts, distribution plans, and so much more. Perhaps one of the most important requirements of the Pre-Pro stage is planning for SAFETY on set. Doing the work to be sure your upcoming production is safe for cast, crew, and yourself is non-negotiable. If you don’t have time to plan safely, you don’t have time to make this film.
While there are far too many examples of planning gone wrong, in this week’s discussion we will focus on the story of 27-year-old Camera Assistant Sarah Jones. In 2014, Sarah was hit and killed by a freight train on the set of the Randall Miller film ‘Midnight Rider’. The 20-person film crew was shooting on a private train trestle in rural Georgia when a train came unexpectedly barreling down the tracks, and several crew members were trapped without an escape route. The story is a horrific tragedy, but can it be considered an accident?
Step 1. Review the following short articles. Feel welcome to conduct your own additional research as well.
ABC News Incident Summary / Parents settle wrongful death suit (Read article only, video may not play and is not required viewing)
Case Moves to Federal Court; OSHA Hearing
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSC) Report
Results: Director Randall Miller Pleads Guilty
Step 2. Respond
Post your initial response to the prompts below by Thursday. Then, respond to at least 2 classmates’ post by Sunday. Keep in mind, you may search and use online articles which are not linked above, as long as you cite your sources!
1. Which crew member position(s) do you feel would have held a responsibility toward set safety on Midnight Rider?
2. What is your reaction to the court’s ruling in this case, based on the information made available?
3. List 3 alleged facts from this case which demonstrate an oversight or lack of planning. (You may copy and paste from articles, as long as you cite your source)
4. Cite your sources at the bottom of your post (APA/MLA formatting is required). Required: Students should research and list: at least one source from Full Sail University’s Online Library and one source from a website.

After reading and watching the videos in this module answer the following questions in this assignment tab. Each answer must be 1 paragram for each question. You must utilize your readings and videos to help support your answer.

1) What did I learn in history class about how this nation was developed and how the constitution was created? How does that differ from what you read in the article by Nikole Hannah Jones? Why is it important to learn about the real history of the United States even if it is tragic and traumatic? Look at the Nikole Hanna Jones article and Bryan Stevenson video to help answer your question.

2) What do the terms inequality, inequity, systems of oppression mean? This can be your own understanding of the topics

3)What are the values stated in the Declaration of Independence? This can be found in the Constitution Document I provided.
A) In what ways can you see those values working in contemporary U.S. society?
B) In what ways can you see them failing?

4. What are the new facts you learned about the constitution and the history of America after reading and watching the materials found in this module?

5. Why do you think some politicians do not want critical race theory to be taught after reading these articles and watching these videos?

Explain the differences between descriptive and prescriptive issues and conclusions.

a) Explain the differences between descriptive and prescriptive issues and conclusions.

b) What clues can you use to help you find the issue and conclusion?

c) Some conclusions are implied by a communicator rather
than made explicit. What clues might help you recognize an implied
conclusion? Can you think of situations in which communicators are
likely to prefer implied conclusions?

d) How do conclusions differ from opinions?

Recall in Week 1 we examined fact-finding on the Internet and how a
lot of “facts” are actually not substantiated with evidence and
essentially untrue! In this assignment we will examine the fact-checking
websites:

www.snopes.com (Internet fact-checking resource)

www.politifact.com (Fact-checking journalism)

www.emergent.info (a real-time rumor tracker)

Consider for instance the following on Snopes:

Do Videos Show Magnets Sticking to People’s Arms After COVID-19 Vaccine?

The claim:

Viral videos showed magnets “stuck” on people’s arms after they
received COVID-19 vaccines, purportedly demonstrating that the vaccines
contained metal devices or ingredients.

The Rating:

Conclusion of Snope’s fact-checking – the claim is FALSE!

After you check out these three sites, continue to the fact-checking scraper research website.

Let’s take a look at the following “Fake News Detection” site from the Discourse Processing Lab at Simon Fraser University.

Step 1) Use your browser and go to:
Fake News Detection (sfu.ca)
Step 2) Scroll down to the “Scrape Fact-Checking Websites” section.

Step 3) Experiment with each of the three fact-checking website
options. Click Download to retrieve a CSV (comma delimited/excel file).

If you take a look at the CSV file(s) you download you can
examine the results of scraping the articles (from an archive 2018 and
older). I have attached a sample scrape file for your review. [Note
Column A tells us if the claim is true/false, and Column C tells us the
“Question” and column F the “claim” (redundant rows are actually
different, they are one row for each source used in the fact-checking].

Your Task:

Identify 3 articles related to the COVID situation (Any COVID topic such as Vaccine, etc..).

For each article do the following:

1) Provide the URL link to the original source and the title of the article.

2) Write your own “Issue” and “Conclusion” based on this article.

3) use any of the fact-checking websites mentioned above to confirm the claim/facts if it is fake or not. Example: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/magnets-covid-vaccine/ “Viral videos showed magnets “stuck” on people’s arms after they
received COVID-19 vaccines, purportedly demonstrating that the vaccines
contained metal devices or ingredients” is FALSE.

[2 pts each article analysis x 3 = 6 pts]

For your answers please do not exceed a total of 1 page,
letter size (8.5 x 11″), 1 inch margin all around with a font of Times
New Roman size 10 single-spaced. You can submit either a Word document
or a PDF document.

You may use a second page strictly for the list of references
used to formulate your answers. All references must be in the proper
format (i.e. MLA, APA, IEEE, ACM… your pick) and each reference must
be properly cited (used) in your answers.

Submit your document containing all the answers (clearly number each answer) and the reference section.

What event does the author discuss which shows social change, due to people coming together, taking risks, and supporting one another?

1) In the very beginning of ‘Small Change,’ the author writes about an event which illustrates strong and powerful activism. What event does the author discuss which shows social change, due to people coming together, taking risks, and supporting one another? Please include details.

2) One difference between traditional activism and social media activism is that traditional activism often requires high risk, while social media activism often requires low risk. Explain what high risk is as it relates to activism, and then explain what low risk is as it relates to activism. Do you feel more people practice high risk activism, or do most practice low risk activism. Why do you feel this way?

3) ) In the article ‘Runner-Up: Malala Yousafzai, the Fighter,’ the author writes about Malala Yousafzai, a girl who continues to fight for equal rights in education so all girls can go to school. Please give a brief summary of Malala’s story, and then explain how she used social media to share her story with the World.

4) Naudika Williams, a young activist, is featured in a video we first watched when we talked about social media and activism. When Naudika shares her story, she talks about the first time she became interested in activism. She then talks about topics and issues which interest her and social injustices she wants to focus on. If you were an activist – or if you already are – what injustice or inequality would you focus on? What upsets you in the World and what would you like to change. Why?

5) How are you feeling today? Write as much or as little as you would like.
