Release of Information

Release of Information Assignment

Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of health information is a major priority for healthcare providers. It is essential that federal and state laws are followed, statutes are enforced, and policies and procedures are developed to ensure that patients’ rights are protected.
Hence, when a request for Release of Information (ROI) is received by an HIM professional: how does one determine that a request is compliant with HIPAA and state regulations? How does one determine if disclosure is appropriate? How is sensitive information related to behavioral health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, STDs, and other communicable diseases and genetics protected from unauthorized access and disclosure? When/how is the access, use, and disclosure of patient information with or without patient authorization applied? Is there a right of refusal to disclose information? What must a healthcare provider to do ensure proper release of patient information?
Deliverable: prepare a 3-5 page paper, double spaced, 12-point font, using APA format and referencing, which addresses the above questions.

Retention and Destruction

Retention and destruction:
Below are several scenarios related to health record retention and destruction. Draw a conclusion for each scenario, based on health information guidelines, regulations, or best practices.
Your organization keeps paper records for ten years, and you are purging records for destruction. What concern do you have with staff pulling records strictly based on that ten-year indicator?
Your HIM department is moving to a new office. In the moving process, in the back of a storage closet, a box of old registries is found. These contain records of births at the organization 50 years ago. What should be done with those records?
There has been debate in your HIM department about how long fetal monitoring strips must be retained. They are considered part of the mother’s health record. What is your recommendation?
You have just taken a new job at a tertiary care facility after working in a small community hospital. At your previous employment, records were retained for 15 years and then destroyed. At this new facility, records are maintained permanently. What inference can you draw from this difference in procedure?
You have just become HIM director at a small critical access hospital. The hospital purges records for destruction quarterly, and the staff has all the records boxed and ready to go. The destruction company workers arrive to collect the records and load them into the truck. They are preparing to leave, but you stop them. Why?
Address each question with specific guidelines, regulations/laws, or best practices (at least one paragraph for each prompt)

Perspective on Monism, Dualism, Functionalism

Assignment goals: This assignment is asking you to understand the differences between: Monism, Dualism and Functionalism (see Friedenberg & Silverman, 2012: 26-35 and/or my cited lecture slides).

This assignment is also asking you to think about who you are as a unique individual and whether you perceive: minds, bodies, and your reality though any one of these perspectives.

Your Task: In 500-1000 words containing: separate paragraphs, the first-person perspective, in-line-citations, and an academic writing style (topic sentence, developing paragraph(s), conclusion etc.)…

A – Quickly summarize by paraphrasing in your own words, the differences between: Monism, Dualism, and Functionalism.

When paraphrasing in your own words, be sure to provide full textbook citations (including page numbers) for each of these perspectives.

B – Then, pick one of the perspectives (Monism, Dualism, Functionalism) that best represents your personal viewpoint(s) and beliefs. From there, then pick the sub-perspective that you believe in and compare it to the other sub-perspectives underneath your category/perspective of choice…

IMPORTANT: You will also need to explicitly differentiate your sub-perspective apart from similar or nearly-identical sub-perspectives. For example, Physical Monism is almost identical to Property Dualism. Functionalism is almost identical to both Physical Monism and Neutral Monism.

C – Provide your own examples from your personal experience to help explain why you prefer this particular perspective (incl. the sub-perspective) over the other two.

D – A good essay (with more points in the rubric) will also discuss your epistemological approach. In other words, how and why do you believe what you believe when it comes to the mind? You might be inspired by a gut-feeling or intuition (Nativism) or, you might require sensory evidence to be convinced of a particular belief being true for you (Empiricism). Alternately, you might come to your beliefs through a reasoning process (Rationalism). Some of you might have an epistemology that combines any one or even all three of these perspectives (i.e. intuition and/or cultural conformity, sensory evidence, and a reasoning process)..

We expect at least the textbook (or the textbook citations on my slides) + 2 additional academic citations (one can be from a religious text)…

The reasoned action approach

Persuasion Theory (240 points)
Part I. Research Paper (100 points)
In this course, understanding theories of persuasion is an essential part of learning. We always use persuasion skills in interpersonal and group communications in modern society. On top of that, as professional communicators, we should learn fundamental knowledge of persuasive messages. Professionals apply persuasive strategies and tactics based on their advertising, public relations, and/or journalism theories. Therefore, we should thoroughly understand significant theories of persuasion. This assignment will focus on the following four theories, while there are more various persuasion theories. You will have a chance to pick one of the theories soon.
Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion
The Heuristic Systematic Model of Persuasion
The Reasoned Action Approach
The first part of this theory assignment is writing about the theory. You can find basic knowledge of each theory in the textbook. In addition, I uploaded research papers that used the theories as theoretical frameworks in advertising and public relations. Please read the textbook and research papers thoroughly. Then, you will find an excellent example to show how the theory works in real life.
You should have the following elements in your draft:
• Explain the theory.
o You do research origin of the theory, premise, the model including independent and dependent variables, etc.
3
• Summary research papers provided.
o You should write the summary in your own words. Also, focus on how the theory has been examined in the research.
• Provide at least one real-life example.
o You should search for an example to support the theory online and offline.
o The examples might be another research paper, advertising messages, persuasive messages in public relations campaigns, etc.
• List references in an appropriate way (APA, MLA, or other citation styles)
Instructions
• Create a new document using MS Word process program.
• Write your original idea in at least 700 words (double-spaced, 12-point Times or Times New Roman with one-inch margins) and save it as “yourlastname_Theory.docx” or “.doc.” • Submit your draft via Blackboard Learning. On the left side of the screen, you can find “Writing Essays.” Click the menu, and then you will find four different assignments. Upload your draft to the assignment “Writing Theory.”
• Submit your assignment by Midnight on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.
Format
• Write subject-verb sentences in the present voice. Sentences should be brief and precise. Mass communicators need to be able to write simply and adapt to different writing styles for different situations.
• New idea? Start a new paragraph. Start your paragraph with a topic sentence. • Impress me with your skills in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You’ll lose points for scary errors and failing to answer all the questions completely.
