– Critical Thinking Questions: Critical thinking involves asking questions about
clarification of key issues, worldview assumptions, reasons/evidence, and implications of

about how the material applies to your area of study/interest. You may simply list the

An example of a good critical thinking question is as follows: The Friedman (2015) text
suggests on page 3 that even infants can be traumatized, using the example of a fictional
character who watched his parents murdered as a very young child. What would trauma
look like in an individual who was too young to remember the traumatic event? How

Goal 1: Expand and enhance public and staff access to library and electronic information resources through our website.

Objectives:

Replace the library’s web server and software by August of 2010.

Form a web committee comprised of representatives from each department by January 2009 to evaluate resources that should be included in the site and to make a schedule to routinely update these resources.
The outreach coordinator will develop marketing materials to promote the site and aim to increase traffic to the site by 20% after six months.
The library manager will establish a list of website competencies for staff and will offer two training sessions to familiarize staff with the resources on the library’s site by March 2009.
Goals and Objectives should be SMART

The acronym stands for:

Specific – Be clear about what needs to be done. Someone other than the person who wrote the plan should be able to clearly see the intended technology path and what will need to be done to be successful.

Measurable – Refer to specific measurements to gauge success. Use details like how many, an expected percentage increase in usage or rate of participation to establish a measurable success rate.

Attainable – Are there sufficient resources, staff time, and budget to achieve goal/objective? When referencing staff resources, state the position in the library that will be responsible for completing the task so that a clear picture can develop about the amount of work that will be delegated.

Relevant – Does the objective support the goal and does the goal support the library’s mission? The projects and activities that the library undertakes should be in direct support of the mission.

Time-bound – When should the objective be completed or measured?

Writing in the SMART style helps to ensure that expectations are clear from the beginning and to keep the plan on track. However, it is important to remember that things can change! If you can no longer achieve the goals set out in your plan, document those challenges or barriers and explain why things were changed

Final Project: Cultural Immersion Experience
Review all of the required materials under Learning Resources. Review directions for the week’s Assignment as well as for the entire module.
Part of your aspirational journey to continuing to expand upon your understanding of cultural competence and humility is to immerse yourself in a culturally diverse experience, event, and/or ceremony. Immersion provides us with the ability to step outside of our comfort zone and become fully present and engaged with those who are unlike ourselves.
Directions for Assignment:
For the Cultural Immersion Experience Assignment, you are required to engage in a culturally diverse experience, event, and/or ceremony for at least 90 minutes related to the following topics: poverty, gender, sexual/affectional orientation, race/ethnicity, spirituality/religion, advocacy, and/or social justice. You will have the option to attend an event (i.e., a religious ceremony, volunteering at a shelter or soup kitchen). If you are unable to find an experience, event, and/or ceremony, reach out to your Instructor by Week 5 for assistance with other options.
This activity is geared toward getting you out of your comfort zone and encouraging you to engage in something different and new that may open your eyes to a cultural experience, ceremony, or event that may help you become a more sensitive and culturally aware counselor. Additionally, consider how this experience inspires you to consider advocating for social justice.
Events cannot be based on personal group engagement/involvement or personal family or connection. After you attend the cultural immersion event, you will write a 4- to 6-page scholarly paper.
Papers also must include a minimum of four (4) scholarly research articles to illustrate points. Additional resources are welcome but do not count towards your minimum of four scholarly articles. Two of your resources may come from the Learning Resources provided in the class but at least two must be found independently from the Walden Library.

For example, if you chose to attend a LGBTQ+ Pride Festival and you are a school counselor, you might consider starting a Gender and Sexualities Alliance (GSA) or a Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) at the school you work for. Or, if you chose to volunteer at a homeless shelter and are a mental health counselor, you might consider advocating for low-income housing.
