Thinking Sociologically Discussion: Hegemonic Ideologies

This Thinking Sociologically Discussion topic centers on the concept of hegemonic ideologies from Ch. 10: Elite Power. Hegemonic ideologies are “shared ideas about how human life should be organized that are used to manufacture our consent to existing social conditions” (p. 276). This section of the chapter touches on popular culture and advertising in America, areas you have been steeped in all of your life. This Thinking Sociologically Discussion asks you to turn the sociological lens back on the popular culture and advertising you consume and examine and re-examine it with hegemonic ideologies in mind. Here is your opportunity to demonstrate your sociological thinking by thinking critically about the ordinary and mundane and making the invisible visible.

Please read Cole’s (2020) What Is Cultural Hegemony (https://www.thoughtco.com/cultural-hegemony-3026121) and Textbook–Wade’s (2022) Chapter 10: Elite Power (https://ncia.wwnorton.com/180091?chapter=10)

Submit a post (400 words max.) addressing the following:
1. Find an image or short video clip (no longer than 90 seconds), that taps into a hegemonic ideology and include it in your post. The image or video may be a commercial advertisement or social media post.
*Resize your image or video to approximately the size of the image below.
2. Unpack the advertisement and explain how it supports and perpetuates the hegemonic ideology you identified in the previous question. There should be several references to Ch. 10: Elite Power to support your explanations. Use quotes or paraphrase to support your statements.
3. Compose an open-ended question for your classmates to answer. An open-ended question is a question that leaves room for discussion rather than being answered with a yes or no.
4. Reply to a student’s post (200 words max) – DUE Sunday, Jan. 30, 11:59PM. In your reply to a student, please answer the question they posed in their post and support your position with references to course material and/or other valid sources.

Tip: Don’t spend too much time searching for the “perfect” image or video. Rather, recognize the saturation of these images in your everyday life and simply select one to critically examine. One of the most beautiful aspects of Sociology is its practice to look at the familiar in strange ways. Simply put your sociology glasses on and scroll through your IG, TikTok, celebrity gossip magazine, Netflix homepage, bookshelves, or local TV channels.

The problems facing the United States in the Gilded Age

LINK BOOK: https://openstax.org/books/us-history/pages/18-introduction
(PLEASE FOCUS ON CHAPTERS 18, 19, 20.)

In what ways did the problems facing the United States in the Gilded Age reflect the fact that this was simply “not the same country the Constitution was meant to govern?” (In other words, what problems existed that were hard to fix because “gee, we never thought we’d have THIS problem…”)

Min. 300 words in length, not counting footnotes.
This must be your own work.
You MUST have footnotes so that I know where you got your info. When in doubt, a footnote at the end of each paragraph telling me where you found the info will save you from a world of problems. Of course, direct quotes/paraphrases should always be instantly footnoted.
As per the Rubric, any paper not using Turabian/CMS for footnotes (e.g. using MLA) will be capped at a 90.
Copying without proper attribution is plagiarism and is punishable by automatic course failure if it’s not your first offense.
A Handy Writing Rubric for Prof. Mojo’s Classes;
or, “How NOT to get a bunch of points taken off your work!”
DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM WIKIPEDIA, SCHMOOP, ANSWERS.COM, PINKMONKEY.COM, EZESSAYS.COM, OR ANY OTHER SUCH SITE. Many of those sources are cr@p and/or not appropriate for use in a college-level class. Also, I want to hear what you think, not what some online person thinks.
CITE YOUR SOURCES, LEST YOU BE ACCUSED OF PLAGIARISM AND GET BOUNCED OUT OF THE CLASS WITH A GRADE OF F! If you are quoting or paraphrasing someone else (your textbook’s author, Prof. Mojo, one of the PDF writers), you need to do a citation. And you need to do it properly –points will be lost through improper citations or use of MLA or APA.
PROVIDE AN INTRODUCTION AND A CONCLUSION. That’s just common sense and it shows you’ve organized your thoughts. A good introduction has a main idea or ideas (a thesis statement), and a good conclusion reinforces it.
ANSWER THE QUESTION THAT I ASK. Look at each prompt and you should be able to see that I am asking some sort of question –even if I don’t actually use a question mark. Think about it… Also, it gives you a central theme for your paper. Jumping around all over the place isn’t good.
USE DETAILS TO BACK UP YOUR POINTS. “The Texian colonists were unhappy with the government.” Okay, that’s a lovely statement; now can you give me some specific examples? But at the same time, don’t throw the kitchen sink at me. Have a reason for every sentence you put in your paper.
THE “MINIMUM LENGTH” IS NOT THE TARGET. Most of you will do better to go over the minimum. Only rarely do I have to take off points for going too long (but be reasonable).
WOULD IT KILL YOU TO RUN A SPELL-CHECK AND A GRAMMAR-CHECK OVER IT BEFORE YOU UPLOAD? Seriously, I do count off for things like that. Show some pride in your work –make it look good.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS I HATE
Failure to separate into paragraphs
Use of first-person, e.g., “I think that…”
Obvious failure to proof-read (lots of typos, misspellings, punctuation mistakes)
>10% too short (e.g., turning in 300 words for a 450-word paper) –I will take off by however much you are short; e.g. short by 33%, I take off 33% from the grade you earned.
Non-standard submission (e.g., direct email): -15 points to overall task grade, unless you can prove to MY satisfaction that the fault was not on your end.
Late work: will not be accepted for weekly assignments.e., automatic zero (for that task) unless it’s the fault of the Professor. Major assignments like a Big Essay or Article Summary will have specific penalties outlined, but again: after a certain amount of time, it will be an automatic zero.
Plagiarism, use of “ringers,” or any such similar violation of academic integrity: zero for a first offense, automatic course failure thereafter, as per the Syllabus
And obviously, I do get to count off for bad grammar, errors of fact, poor summarization, etc.
It should go without saying that I don’t need pictures or graphics in my papers. Also, you should be using proper formal writing language. And each student should do his or her own work –I don’t like seeing two students turning in the same essay.

Briefly discuss in one short paragraph a conflict or something that bothered you or simply something important that you learned from a clinical situation. If you encountered a challenging nursing situation, try to describe it from a lens of “caring” or “from the perspective of caring.” What did you learn from the situation and how did you grow as a result of the situation?

Event of a lifetime

Non-Normative Event
Non-normative influences are unpredictable
and not tied to a certain developmental time in a person’s development or to
a historical period.
They are the unique experiences of an individual, whether
biological or environmental, that shape the development process.
These could include milestones like earning a master’s
degree or getting a certain job offer or other events like going through a divorce
or coping with the death of a child. Other
Examples: Winning the lottery,
becoming pregnant exceptionally early in life. Losing a parent at the age of 2
or 4 years old.
Essay

(1) Write about any non-normative life events you or
someone close to you has experienced.
(2) What happened?
(3) How did you (or your friend) react?
(4) What visible effect has the event had on your behavior
since it occurred?
(5) Why do you think it has affected your development
in this way?
(6) Can you imagine what your personality and life might
be like had you not had this particular experience?
(7) If you are considering someone else as the focus of
this answer, ask if they would be willing to share these thoughts with you,
promising them anonymity for their responses.

OOP and Computational Thinking

Create a 5-page MS Word document following APA guidelines (first person should not be used). Write this document for a technical audience.
Research and answer the following components:
Programming Paradigms
. Research the functional, procedural, and object-oriented programming paradigms. Compare, contrast, and detail the most appropriate uses of each paradigm in modern programming.
Language Analysis. Research a minimum of two different programming languages for each of the three programming paradigms listed in item 1 above. Provide details on why each of those languages are ideally suited for the specific programming paradigm. You should have 2 languages for each of the 3 paradigms.
Position Statement. Based on your research results from items 1 and 2 above, write a formal recommendation selecting one programming paradigm and one programming language. Assume you are the Software Development Manager at a large fintech (Financial Technology) company, and you have been asked by your CIO to recommend a specific programming paradigm and a primary programming language. Format this part of the assignment as an internal email to your CIO.
Note: the title and reference pages do not count toward the page length requirement.
