Assignment 2: Application of Reading and Research to Practice (ARRP)
Module 1: Neuroscience and Learning
PURPOSE: The purpose of this activity is to help youuse current research from educational psychology and neuroscience to critically examine your existing beliefs about and understanding of teaching and learning. To do this, you will respond to some questions/prompts to illustrate your understanding of course concepts and how they apply to education in general and to your specific educational practices. These questions relate to some of the important topics we will study in this class, but focus on the topics, concepts, and constructs addressed in the current module. Later in the semester, you may choose to look again at your views on these same questions as you complete the final project.
TASK: Your task is the answer the following questions based on resources provided in the module and your experiences as educators and learners.
• What new information did you learn from the neuroscience articles and videos that challenges what you previously believed regarding brain development, teaching, and learning? Be sure to include your perspectives on debunking of myths.
• What new information did you learn that may change how you teach or how you encourage your teachers to teach?
Your completed assignment should be a total of 4-6 pages (typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt.). Post your assignment, formatted as either a Word doc or PDF, in the appropriate D2L Drop Box. Your assignment should align with APA style (resources to support your use of APA style are provided in the “Resource” module on the D2L course page). You must include a reference page with all assignment, but you do NOT need to include a title/cover page. If you include a title/cover page, that should not count as one of your 4-6 pages.
CRITERIA: You will be successful in this activity if you can: (a) provide answers that directly address all parts of all prompts, (b) demonstrate an accurate understanding and analysis of the course materials/concepts and an ability to use course materials to support your ideas, (c) apply course materials/concepts to your own instructional practices and/or educational practice in general; and (d) use writing convention/style expected of upper graduate level work.

Students will complete an integrative project that includes a background report, interview and theoretical analysis of a specific, target topic related to the development of human sexuality, gender identity, gender roles, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual dysfunctions or atypical sexual variations (for example, a target topic related to gender identity might be transsexualism; or a target topic related to gender roles might be women in the workforce or stay-at-home fathers).
After selecting a target topic, students will complete a report that highlights key research, findings and information relevant to the topic.
In addition, the student will interview 2 individuals on their attitudes, values and beliefs in relation to the target topic.
Finally, the students will complete a theoretical analysis of the interview information in which they compare and contrast interview findings to address the biological foundations, social pressures, and cultural influences that may contribute to the attitudes, values or beliefs revealed through the interviews.
Core Assessment Discussion
There is a discussion area in Unit 2 that will allow you to post your project topic and any questions or concerns you may have about the assignment. The Instructor will provide feedback. This is not part of your Core Assessment grade.
Core Assessment Paper Outline
A brief outline of your Core Assessment paper with a Reference page will be due at the end of Unit 3.
Background
3 to 5 pages utilizing scientific information found in books, journal articles, popular media and the Internet; provides an informational base from which the topic can be understood.
Interview
2 to 3 pages that summarizes findings for each of the 2 interviewees (you do not need to include a transcript of the actual interview; summarize comments of each person into a cohesive report).
Theoretical Analysis
3 to 5 pages that utilizes information learned in the class and research concerning biological foundations, social pressures and cultural influences of sexuality; in this section of the paper, students will apply what they have learned to interpret and analyze the interview findings from a scientific perspective.
Peer Reviewed References
An important part of the Core Assessment is to include articles that are peer reviewed or from a scholarly journal (e.g., Journal of Human Sexuality, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of the American Medical Association, ect.).
According to the American Psychological Association (APA)
As one of the core principles of the scientific community, the process of peer review ensures that only those research proposals with the highest scientific merit receive funding from federal agencies. Since 2003, APA has been continuously engaged in work to educate policymakers on this issue and to defeat numerous congressional attempts to rescind funding for peer-reviewed research at the National Institutes of Health as well as the National Science Foundation.
• Style and Grammar:
• Information must be organized, presented and referenced using APA style. Paper must include 5 references in addition to the interviews. Paper should be a minimum of 10 pages (plus title and reference pages).
Explain how your chosen business differentiates its product or service from competitors’ offerings you have named.
Think about a product or service you really love – something that you have recommended to your friends or family or that you would get excited talking about to a stranger. Maybe its LaCroix soft drinks, a comfortable pair of shoes, the double-chocolate muffin at your favorite bakery, or the convenient rides you get through your Lyft app. With that product or service in mind, think about the business strategy behind it.
First, conduct research on the business, gathering as much information about its strategy as possible. Visit its website, search for news stories about the product or service, and search social media for mentions of the business. While you will not be able to learn everything about a business’s strategy that an insider would know, you should be able to get a general idea of how the business operates and what the industry environment is like. You MUST post the links to the materials you are drawing your information from as part of the DB.
Next, in your post identify at least two the business’s main competitors. Explain how your chosen business differentiates its product or service from competitors’ offerings you have named.
Then, explain its competitive advantage, drawing on terms form this week’s reading materials. Do you think the advantage is sustainable? Why or why not?
