What does your analysis say about the media generally, about the people who produce it, about the people who are featured in it?
1. As
you learn more about your case, and start to understand what happened, you’ll
need to consider what other writers, commentators, scholars, and theorists have
said about your topic in the past. You’ll want to explain how your case fits in
with communication theories we’ve considered in class, and possibly from other
courses (e.g. cultural hegemony, framing, agenda-setting, cultural theory, etc.).
2. Writing
the paper.
·
Your paper should come out between 2,000 and
3,000 words, before adding your references.
·
It should include an introduction that describes the topic and case you’ve chosen, the issues
you will address in the paper, as well as a thesis statement summarizing your
analysis in one or two sentences.
·
The next section you could call your Overview or Background. Here you will set the scene for your case, describing
the most important and relevant facts and issues. You want to demonstrate that you’ve
thoroughly researched the topic and case.
·
The next section you could title Analysis. This is where you will
evaluate the case, looking at the various elements with a view to describing
what isn’t working, and why that is.
·
A Discussion
section follows in which you do a deeper analysis of your findings and start
to compare them against other cases. You’ll want to consider other research,
and start to bring in theory to explain your observations. The focus in this
part of the paper is answering the question “why?” What does your analysis say
about the media generally, about the people who produce it, about the people
who are featured in it? What, if anything, needs to change? You can propose
potential solutions or recommendations here as well.
·
Finally, wrap up your analysis with a Conclusion, a summation of your case, and its key findings.
·
Of course, it goes without saying, that there
will be deductions for grammar and spelling mistakes and any typos.

Scenario: Makaila is 7 years old and lives with her grandmother in a
spacious apartment in a busy, low-income, urban neighborhood. She has
lived with her grandmother since birth and seems to have a positive
relationship with her. She described her grandmother as both nurturing and
strict. When asked about contact with her biological parents, Makaila replied
that she never sees her father, since he has been in prison for years, but she
talks to him on the phone almost every week. When asked about her mother,
she answered, “I only saw her once which was when she came to the door
and tried to snatch me away from my granny. It was really scary. Now I hate
my mom and don’t want to see her again.”
When asked additional questions about safety, Makaila immediately
responded, “There’s some stuff I’m not allowed to talk about unless I ask
granny first.” She then said, “I don’t want to talk about the bad stuff my
mean cousin used to do to me.” When asked about things that she has seen
or heard living in or near her home, Makaila replied, “Sometimes I hear guns,
especially on the fourth of July. I seen stuff like people dealing drugs and

beating each other up downstairs in our building and also down the street.”
When asked if she would tell anyone if something happened that made her
feel unsafe Makaila said, “Maybe, it depends on what.” While Makaila seems
to have been exposed to a fair amount of violence, she reported that her
grandmother carefully supervises her and that she feels safe “all of the time”
in her grandmother’s home.
Makaila perceives that her grandmother has consistently positive
expectations for Makaila’s future. Makaila, on the other hand, believes that
she will finish high school and “maybe” go to college. When asked whether
she would get pregnant as a teenager, or whether she would use drugs as a
grown-up, she responded, “Yes.” To our question, “Do you think that you will
stay safe and not get killed?” she replied, “Maybe.” Finally, Makaila offered a
picture of her possible future: “Granny works in the nightclub and takes me
there sometimes. Maybe I’m going to work there someday.”

Are you using all of the argumentation strategies that we have discussed?
Peer review is apparently difficult online. I’m going to upload the form that we would have used in the classroom, and if you can have someone else complete it–another student in our class or someone else who is willing to answer all my questions–that would be best.
However, that won’t always be possible online, so you may also complete the peer review as a self-evaluation and answer the questions yourself about your essay.
You can always ask me for feedback, but I’d prefer that you or someone other than me completes your peer review. You can also ask questions of one of our tutors or use the Net Tutor link on this page for additional feedback.
The peer review is worth points, so do it one way or the other :-).
The goal here is to test out your argument for an audience–your reader–and imagine that reader to be like the hostile people in the community who think you voted for the wrong verdict. Are you, in your essay, able to persuade that person that your verdict was, in fact, right?
Are you using all of the argumentation strategies that we have discussed?
You can download the form and fill it out or just type the responses separately and upload them.
What about concepts such as sharing, helping neighbors, and protecting the environment?
FOUNDATIONS OF CAPITALISM
Throughout history of capitalism, there has been one persistent criticism. The whole system seems to be based on selfishness¾the more one works, the more one prospers. If one is unable to work, the system seems to have no answer to his or her problems. Furthermore, there does not seem to be any moral or spiritual foundation to the system. Where do businesses get their values? What about concepts such as sharing, helping neighbors, and protecting the environment?
It is important to make the distinction between plain capitalism and democratic capitalism. Democratic capitalism is a system based on three components: (1) free enterprise; that is, freedom to own your own businesses and farms and freedom to keep the profits, (2) a freely elected government that has internal checks and balances, and (3) moral, ethical, and spiritual values that are part of the very fabric of the country and the business system. Plain capitalism is a system where there is free enterprise, but no freely elected government and no foundation of moral, ethical, and spiritual values. There are several “capitalist” countries headed by right‑wing dictators that do not have democratic capitalism and do not have the relative prosperity and social justice that we have in the United States.
Let’s explore democratic capitalism in more detail so that you can understand how the system works. One of the most important elements of democratic capitalism is its moral and spiritual base. When the U.S. was being settled, there was so much religious debate and rivalry among religions that people were tortured and killed for their beliefs. When it came time to establish a free and separate U. S., however, the founding fathers were adamant about freedom of religion. They were very religious people themselves.
Thomas Jefferson was proud of his religious heritage and his fight for religious freedom in the U.S. He asked that his epitaph should read: “Author of the Declaration of Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia.” Jefferson felt that freedom of religion was one of his most important contributions. He felt it was as important as being President of the United States.
Democratic capitalism cannot work effectively and fairly without all three components. With all three, the democratic capitalist system can become the most fair and equitable economic system in the world. Not everyone agrees on the role of government in the democratic system and on how much of the total gross national product the government should control. (Recent history indicates that somewhere between 20% and 25% of GDP gives the government the funds it needs to create more social justice and more equitable distribution of wealth.) A freely elected government is important to democratic capitalism because if the people feel that the system is not fair, they can elect new politicians to change the rules.
Answer the following Questions
A Minimum of 300 Words (not including the questions); provide one to two references using APA formatting.
1. Why is it so necessary to have a freely elected government for democratic capitalism to create a prosperous and fair economy?
2. Go through the three components of democratic capitalism and picture an economy without each one.
a) What happens to freedom, fairness, and moral and ethical behavior?
b) Which part of the system seems weakest today?
c) What can be done about it?
Are charter schools more effective than traditional charter schools?
Using Dr. Karen’s Foolproof Grant Template, (and the example paper to guide you), write a research proposal on the effectiveness of charter schools in the US when compared to traditional public schools. The details of planning should look as if you were given 6 months- 1 year to conduct the research. You must tell the reader what the research is and how you plan to conduct it. Conclude by reflecting on how conducting such research could contribute to a relevant discussion in sociology today
Be sure to:
Use MLA format.
Use the articles provided to give background information.
Follow the template (the only thing you don’t really have to include is the “budget” portion as it was not included in the example paper).
Make sure to include a bibliography/ works cited page.
Feel free to:
Refer to the “Discussion Boards” doc to see my own takeaways from the readings and how I perceived them as helpful for the research (these include summaries, and have the citations 4 of the articles)

Explain how forensic treatment practitioners can involve family in the treatment of juvenile offenders.
Assignment: The Role of Family in Treating Juvenile Offenders
Children often come from varying relationships. They are sons, daughters, cousins, grandchildren, students, or even wards. These relationships are dynamic, and as children age they establish their identity and individuality independent of others. At the same time, children typically rely on others for guidance and support. The goal of a child’s developmental process is to reach adulthood having the ability to act independently and responsibly in the context of established relationships such as the family. This is important to consider when selecting treatment approaches and providing treatment to juvenile offenders. In addition, it is important to consider the benefits and liabilities of involving the family or supportive adults in the treatment of juvenile offenders.
To prepare for this Assignment, consider the role and importance of family in the treatment of juvenile offenders.
The Assignment (1–2 pages):
Explain the role and importance of family in the treatment of juvenile offenders. Be specific.
Explain how forensic treatment practitioners can involve family in the treatment of juvenile offenders. Then, explain the benefits and challenges to the family’s involvement.
Use examples from the resources and from your own research to illustrate your points.
Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the resources for this course.
Which factors play a role in the degree of fluid and or electrolyte imbalances?
Case Scenario
A 65 year-old male went hiking with two friends up in the
mountains. The week before, Mr. C had the flu but he was determined to make the
five hour climb. Mr. C’s wife packed some chocolate covered- dried cranberries
for his snack since she believed the “fruit” would be healthy. She
was concerned because Mr. C. had been a little depressed over the last year
since the NP could not get his blood pressure under control. Mr. C. was put on
a thiazide diuretic for his Hypertension. He has been taking Celexa for a few
months. Although Mrs. C. was concerned about her husband’s condition, she
thought the hike might be good for him.
When the group got to the top of the mountains, the temp was
75 degrees. As they descended, the air was hot and humid. Mr. C drunk all of
his water from the snack box prepared by his wife. He stated he was
“feeling dehydrated and wanted to stay hydrated” since he had the flu
last week.
Mr. C told his friends that he was seeing spots in his eyes
and feeling dizzy. The friends asked if he wanted to take a break and he
refused. About 20 minutes later, he yelled “Run there is a lion”. The
friends became very concerned at this time since they thought Mr. C. was
talking “out of his head”. A few minutes later, Mr. C. complained of
feeling dizzy and fell down. He said “I must still be weak and dehydrated
from the flu that I had last week. I can’t think straight”. “I wonder
if this could be a side of effect of my meds?”
The friends rushed him to the nearest clinic. As the NP, you
sent his lab work to the on-site clinical laboratory which provided the
following electrolyte test results:
Na+ = 128 meq/L
K+ = 4.5 meq/L
Cl- = 95 meq/L
Ca++ = 1 mmol/L
CO2 Total = 26 meq/L
Anion gap =9.6 mEq/L
glucose = 120
HCT = 33%
BUN= 5
Cr+ .9 mg/dL
AST/SGOT = 32
Albumin = 3.3
Protein, total = 5.3g/dL
Based on the information presented:
Which lab values are
abnormal? Identify if elevated or decreased and state the rationale for the
abnormality.
Identify Mr. C
diagnosis. (Include both electrolyte and fluid alterations).
What is the most
likely cause of this problem?
What are the physical
symptoms of this problem?
What would you as the
NP tell Mr. C how to prevent the problem?
What information
should Mr. C. report to the NP when he arrived at the clinic? Why is this
important?
Is it better to
measure calcium level by the amount of ionized calcium or total calcium? Discuss
the rationale for your answer.
Identify the signs
and symptoms you would expect to see for the abnormal fluid volume.
Which factors play a
role in the degree of fluid and or electrolyte imbalances? Explain in detail.
Discuss what would
happen to the cells if these clinical problems are not corrected. i.e would
they shrink, swell etc.
Did Mr. C’s snack
impact his condition? Explain your answer.
Why was the K+ level
normal?
What other factor
could have contributed to Mr’s C’s condition?
What is the
appropriate treatment by the NP for the fluid and electrolyte imbalances?
