How the courts address or respect our rights as citizens-outline

Part I: How the Courts Address or Respect Our Rights as Citizens – Outline

Assignment
Required Resources
Minimum of 2 scholarly sources in addition to the textbook.
Name of the textbook:The struggle for democracy, 2018 elections and updates edition. (12th edition)

This assignment is comprised of 2 parts, the first of which is due this week. Part II will be due in Week 7.

In Part I this week, choose a case from your state that involves civil rights or civil liberties that was decided by the United States Supreme Court. If your state does not have a case that was decided by the United States Supreme Court, choose a civil rights case from another state for which the United States Supreme Court issued a decision.

Here is a brief description of civil rights and civil liberties: Civil rights refers to equal social opportunities under the law. It gives you these freedoms such as the right to vote, the right to public education, or a fair trial, among other things, regardless of your wealth or race. Civil liberties mean freedom of religion, equal treatment and due process under the law, and the right to privacy.

You should be able to go online and look up your state and famous cases decided by the Supreme Court. For example, Brown v Board of Education (1951) started in Topeka, Kansas, and ended up in the Supreme Court of the United States. Another example would be Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley v Steve Sisolak, Governor of Nevada (2020) that started in Nevada and ended up in the United States Supreme Court. A good source of information about cases decided by the United States Supreme Court is www.scotusblog.com. Other sources can be researched online using search terms for “civil rights cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.” Be sure to use a case actually decided by the United States Supreme Court, and not a case decided by your state’s supreme court or a different court. A case that is still pending before the United States Supreme Court should not be used. If you are unsure, please contact your Professor BEFORE you pick your case and submit the assignment as this is a significant part of your overall grade.

Research your court case and write an outline of the case that you will be using to prepare a presentation, which will either be a narrated PowerPoint, a Kaltura Video, or some other format as approved by your instructor. If you are unsure, then verify the presentation format with your instructor before starting work on this assignment.

This week’s assignment should include (a) summary of the case; (b) a case outline; and a summary.

Summary of the Case

In one or two paragraphs, provide a general overview of the case that serves as a snapshot of what the case is about and how it ended up in your state high court. A summary is using your words to write a brief history of the case. Do not give your opinion or your interpretation but stick to the facts only.

Case Outline

Your court case outline should include:

Title: Name of the case

Facts of the case: Provide key facts involving the case.

History of the case: What legal action was taken based on what your state laws say about this case?

Legal questions: What were the legal issues the court had to decide?

Decision or holdings: Did the court decide for the plaintiff or the defendant? Explain the reason behind the decision?

Verdict and opinion (judgement): What were the concurring and dissenting opinions? How many judges decided for the defendant and how many justices decided against the defendant? What was the final verdict from the judge or the jury, if it was a jury trial?

Conclusion:

What was the resulting impact of the ruling? How did the citizens of your state benefit from it? Was this a good decision?

Requirements

The length of your outline will vary. Usually an outline is anywhere from 1-3 pages long. Make sure to write full sentences to explain your case. It is a concise list to be used as a reference for you during the presentation.
Using the outline, you will be describing the court case in your presentation and the scenario around the court case. The use of Wikipedia as a primary source of information is to be avoided – it is not a reliable source of information.
Search for an example of a case outline in the Internet. Without going into much detail at this state, each of the items listed above has a subject sentence with 3-6 bullet points that can help you expand on the topic.
For Week 7, you will be creating a narrated PowerPoint, or a video as approved by your instructor, from this week’s outline.
This assignment is worth 200 points.

Outcomes

CO 1: Evaluate the principles of democracy and Federalism.

CO 5: Critically examine evidence to support well-reasoned arguments.

CO 6: Critically analyze the American political environment and issues relating to present day using primary and secondary sources.

Compare and Contrast two specific items (such as reality tv vs. sitcoms)

Two tv shows or types of tv shows (such as reality tv vs. sitcoms)
You can compare two specific shows, such as Modern Family and How I Met Your Mother, or two types of tv shows and thereby bring in several specific shows (such as Survivor, Big Brother, and Project Runway for reality shows and Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, and Big Bang Theory for sitcoms. Keep in mind, though, that if you choose the second option, you will want to focus on the genre more than specific shows. You could choose one sitcom and one reality show and bring up the differences in genre that way.

Whatever topic you choose, make sure it is narrow enough that you can adequately compare/contrast it in this short, short essay. Draw on your own experiences to complete the assignment, but do not turn this paper into a narrative. For example, do not write about how awesome you were both as a freshman and as a senior in high school because of the fame caused by your football record. You could use that experience as an example but not as the focal point of your paper.

Requirements
2-3 pages (seriously, no more than three pages)
No outside research is required or even wanted—rely on your own experiences
Stay in formal 3rd person throughout the essay
Take advantage of the other resources I give you

Social Welfare Policy Analysis and Letter to Legislator

Instructions:
The goal of this project is to understand a social welfare policy that impacts our client populations, and how it does so. This policy should be something being discussed right now, that would be relevant to your legislators at this time. It could be a proposed policy, a recently implemented policy that still needs attention, or a policy that you’d like to see terminated.
Social welfare policy can be analyzed using several methods, but for the purposes of this assignment, we’ll be applying the Critical Model for Social Welfare Policy Analysis.
Analysis
Your research paper should include an explanation for each of the following criteria. Use Box 4.3 in your text (pg. 100), to assist you in providing detail.
What is the problem that prompts a policy solution?
Where is the power imbalance, or struggle?
What is the public reaction? Make sure to address opposing viewpoints
What are the objectives of the policy?
How will the policy be implemented?
What is the intended impact?
Who are the impacted populations?
Social Work Roles
You will need to write about the roles a social worker might have in implementing this policy:
What ways might a social worker encounter this policy at a micro and macro level?
What ethical issues or values dilemmas that might occur for the social workers with regard to this policy. Be sure to reference specific NASW Ethical Standards.
Reflection
As a social worker, what changes would you make to this policy in order to better serve the population it affects? Be specific. Don’t make blanket statements like, “I would work to improve this policy because it needs to be improved…”
Letter to Legislator
Please complete a legislative letter, following one of the below example formats, or other suitable format presented in class or researched on your own. Your letter should be written to your district senator and/or representative. Make sure that you are writing to your district representation, not your federal representation.
Introduction of self as a constituent – Make sure that your senator and/or representative know that you are a voter in their district.
Request – You should be requesting a change to existing policy, a vote for or against a proposed policy, or a new policy.
Anecdote – To create a lasting impression and emotional connection for your senator and/or representative, share why you’re passionate about this issue and legislation. This can be personal, or something universal, but it should evoke an emotional response.
Backup Research – Ensure you back up your statements and opinions with fact. Use at least one outside source to provide substance to your letter. This source should be objective and factual. You should cite your source in-text, not in an attached reference page. For instance, you could say, “According to the Centers for Disease Control, … (2016).
Reiterate Request – Make sure it’s clear what you want your legislators to do in order to address this issue.
Express Gratitude – Thank your legislator for their time in addressing this issue.
Signature – Don’t forget to sign and include your return address.
Writing Guidelines
Be sure to follow the writing guidelines outlined in your Course Overview and refer to the rubric associated with this assignment.
Social Policy Analysis
Your research should be addressing a relevant social welfare policy, not an issue.
Your paper should include information from at least five outside resources, no longer than ten years old. These might include your textbook, a government website, a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal, a documentary, etc. No use of Wikipedia or similar sources will be counted.
Your sources should be cited in APA format, both in-text and on a reference slide.
You should avoid the use of the first person in your writing.
Your paper should be approximately 4-5 pages in length.
Legislative Letter
Your letter should follow one of the example templates, or other appropriate template.
The focus of your letter should be a relevant legislative topic and should relate in some way to your Policy Analysis.

Introduction to the Criminal Justice System – A Total Systems Approach – 2 questions to be answered each to be 800 words

2 questions each of 800 words to be answered:
I have attached some suggestions for this essay in the “FINAL INSTRUCTIONS” – UPLOADED
I have also attached the course notes (19 pages) IF NEEDED

Question 1 involves Chapter 9 in this textbook – PLEASE REVEIW (text book attached)
1. Consider what you have learned about the goals of sentencing (utilitarian, retributive, and
restorative). Now think about the types of sentences that an individual can receive in community
corrections (e.g., probation). How do you think these sentencing goals are connected to experiences in
and realities of community corrections? Consider both the experiences of those serving time in the
community and those who work with these offenders (e.g., probation officers).

Question 5 involves Chapter 14 in this textbook – PLEASE REVEIW (text book attached)
5. The release, re-entry and reintegration process can be difficult for some recently released offenders.
Explain the process of release, re-entry and reintegration and the challenges faced by released

Based on the information you’ve learned over the semester, including this module, what would be critical for you to tell your customers under the following subheadings?

You have been tasked with the creation of a document to provide to your analytical laboratory’s customers. Within this document you need to address the three primary factors that were discussed in the module’s reading, quality, pricing, and turnaround, which will be the focus of this assignment. For the purposes of this assignment, you only need to address these three factors.

When formulating your response, consider what it is that your laboratory does to be a standout amongst labs that are capable of providing the same analytical suite. You would certainly want to sell your potential customers on the quality measures that your lab takes so keep that in mind as you respond.

1) Quality (16 pts with each point worth 0.5)

Based on the information you’ve learned over the semester, including this module, what would be critical for you to tell your customers under the following subheadings?

List and discuss four (4) points for each of the subheadings to include quality control measures that your lab has taken or put in place when responding to this question.

Additionally, start each of your points off by stating, “Our laboratory has/provides/conducts…”, or something equivalent that shows action.

a) Equipment (Modules 1 & 11)

b) Validations (Modules 1 & 4)

c) SOPs (Modules 1 & 7)

d) Personnel (Modules 1 & 2)

e) Internal Audits and Accreditation (Modules 1 & 11)

f) Evidence Acceptance, Security, Storage and Chain of Custody Measures (Modules 1, 6, & 11)

g) Facility and Safety (Modules 1, 2, & 3)

h) Reports and Records (Modules 9 & 10)

2) Pricing (2 points)

Your laboratory’s price/sample is $500. Part of your document needs to include how you arrived at this price. List and discuss four (4) reasons for this pricing. Please note, no math or further break down of the $500 is needed to show how you arrived at this total sum, just provide a discussion to disclose to your customers what your laboratory bases its pricing on.

3) Turnaround (2 points)

Following completion and dissemination of the above document, informing your customers of your established analytical procedures, and making your customers fully aware of your lab’s capabilities, answer the following:

a) What do you do when your lab does not have an established SOP in place for an analysis the customer is asking for? Would it be acceptable to conduct research, locate a method found in a peer-reviewed journal and immediately begin to use it for the analysis? Why or why not?

b) What would you do, as an analyst, if the customer calls and is being unreasonably insistent that their sample’s analysis needs to be rushed and completed within 24 hours when the analysis typically takes longer, and you have several cases to be worked prior to theirs?

batteries for vehicles, energy storage, and filling the gaps in grid scale electricity due to the intermittency of renewable energy.

Length: 10 pages minimum, no maximum length
Topic
The main drivers for investment in renewable energy are the following:

–global warming (also called climate change);

— comparative costs of renewable and fossil fuel technologies;

— pollution and its role in pushing investment into renewable energy;

–the amount of money likely to be in play;

–government regulations—national, state/regional, or municipal and international agreements, such as that of Cop 21–including taxes and subsidies which may favor (or disadvantage) investment in renewable energy; the most prominent of these subsidies are those in the Inflation Reduction Act.

–the element of belief, sometimes called dreams, in major investment shifts;

–energy independence, often expressed as a major element of national defense—particularly since the Russian aggression in Ukraine;

–and the potential role of millions of electric car owners as a lobbying force to shift the world into renewable energy.

These electric cars can’t run without batteries, and batteries can be used not only for road vehicles, but also for energy storage and filling some of the gaps in grid scale renewable energy generation when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow. Some ferry boats are now powered by batteries and several companies are now developing electric airplanes and helicopters. So, the topic of the term paper is: batteries for vehicles, energy storage, and filling the gaps in grid scale electricity due to the intermittency of renewable energy.
This is the only topic permitted for the term paper. A paper on any other topic will not be counted and the grade for the course will be INC.

You may focus on any aspect of the topic that interests you: current major companies or minor ones, including start-ups, devoted to batteries; the battery industry itself; the safety issues with these batteries; the waste disposal issues, the recycling possibilities for batteries; the availability and market for the raw materials for batteries. You may also focus on a particular battery technology, e.g., solid state, or iron flow batteries.

Structure of the paper:

After an initial introduction, in the first part of your paper, which you should caption as Part I, you should discuss the drivers of the renewable energy investment story that we have reviewed in class, and any others that you think are significant. We have discussed, or will discuss, in class the following drivers. Each should be discussed under an individual subheading:

–global warming (also called climate change);

–comparative costs of renewable and fossil fuel technologies;

–the amount of money likely to be in play;

–energy independence in the name of national defense.

–pollution and its role in pushing investment into renewable energy;

–government regulations—Biden’s inflation Reduction Act, state/regional, or municipal laws, and international agreements, such as that of Cop 21–including taxes and subsidies which may favor (or disadvantage) investment in renewable energy;

–the element of belief, sometimes called dreams, in major investment shifts;

–the potential role of millions of electric car owners as a lobbying force to shift the world into renewable energy.

In the next part of your paper, which you should label as Part II, you should explain the battery technologies that have been used and the one that you think is the best for each purpose: cars, trucks and busses; energy storage for buildings; and filling the gaps in renewable energy for the grid. If you choose, you could also discuss batteries for ships and airplanes. You may, if you choose, focus Part II of your paper on only one of the above topics (batteries for vehicles, buildings or the grid), with just a brief discussion of the others. Discuss the costs of these battery technologies. Discuss also the issue of availability of, and market for, battery materials—commodities such as lithium, copper, cobalt, nickel, etc. Discuss recycling and pollution issues—in particular, Not-In-My-Backyard (NIMBY) issues associated with mining, manufacturing, and recycling. Discuss potential and/or likely future battery technologies, such as solid state batteries. Can the claims of the proponents of the various new battery types be believed?

You should conclude your paper with a recommendation (to a major company or a big investor) on whether to invest or not in the industry/company that is the focus of your paper.

Your paper must be fully documented, as discussed in class, with citations for specific claims. Papers without documentation will receive no grade and the course grade will be INC.

Under no circumstances should you infringe the copyright on published material. Setting aside all ethical issues, it is now fully detectable using the internet. So Brooklyn College’s strong position on the matter is easy to enforce.

Cultural Humility, Current Events, and Lived Experiences — Discussion

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the inequities and injustices in our country and around world has been amplified (i.e., disparities in health, education, access to services, etc.). Throughout this semester we have talked consistently of the lived experience and how it defines, impacts, and influences an individual’s relation to the world, interactions with individuals, and the salience of identities. Our lived experiences and the experiences of the individuals we serve do not occur in isolation; rather, they happen in the context of our social and political environments.

As rehabilitation counselors, to be culturally humble we must also be cognizant of the environments individuals function in and how they may facilitate or impede a person’s success, progress, access, and overall quality of life. Our media is filled with examples that beg for cultural humility and accountability in our institutions, communities, and individual actions. There are also examples that capture the spirit of social justice, equity, and inclusion.

In this second and final discussion board, locate a news article about a current event that touches on at least one of the following topics:
cultural humility
social justice
equity
inclusion

In your first post, provide the following information:
Title of article
Source of article (if the article is available online provide the URL; if it’s from a magazine provide the reference)
Brief summary of the article – no more than 4 sentences
Significance of article in relation to any of the topics listed above.
