Both of your readings in this unit analyze the rhetorical (persuasive) strategies used in various disciplines. For example, Bahls et al. analyze mathematical writer’s strategic use of compression techniques, 1st person plural references, transitions and metacommentary, and visual rhetoric to appeal to and persuade their target audience, while Hyland’s article analyzes how articles across 8 disciplines use 1st person references and self-citation to build credibility in different ways.
For this discussion, write a 300-word post in which you apply some of the specific strategies Bahls et al. and Hyland analyzed to the article you are analyzing for your Unit 3 assignment. In your response, you might consider some of these of the following questions. However, you do not need to answer all of these – do focus your response on one or a few related rhetorical strategies that seem particularly important or compelling.
How do the writers in your article establish and build their ethos (credibility, authority, reliability)? Why might these methods suit or particularly persuasive to members of this discipline?
Does the article use 1st (plural or singular) or 3rd person and to what extent– and why might that be persuasive to other members of their discipline?
What can you observe about writing style, tone, jargon, or compression in your article? How does that compare to what Bahls et al. observe about writing in mathematics?
What can you observe about the way visual rhetoric is used in the article including document design and layout as well as actual images or data visualizations?
How are references/citations of other sources used to build the credibility and persuasiveness of the article (whether written by the authors themselves or other scholars in the field)? Why and how are other sources used (for what specific purposes?

Develop a formal proposal using the attached “C922 Curriculum Technology Proposal Template” that integrates the chosen emerging technology for a curricular change to the previously developed course, “The Role of the BSN Nurse in Promoting Community Health.”

A. Write an executive summary (suggested length 1 page) that includes a synopsis of the key points of your proposal.

Note: The executive summary is written after you have completed your proposal; however, APA-style formatting should be referenced and used. And APA-style formatting requires this summary be placed at the opening of your proposal.

B. Write a literature review on the use of technology in education by doing the following:

1. Provide five credible sources published in the last five years that are relevant to your curriculum proposal project in the “Literature Review Summary Table” found in the attached “C922 Curriculum Technology Proposal Template”

2. Provide an evidence summary of the academic literature you found in part B1 on the use of technology in education.

3. Based on your literature review, discuss gaps in the use of technology in nursing education.

C. Complete a needs assessment by doing the following:

1. Describe the process used to conduct a curricular technology needs assessment using a gap analysis.

a. Identify three academic stakeholders (e.g., faculty, students, preceptors, IT personnel) and their roles in the gap analysis.

b. Explain methods of collaboration with interprofessional teams.

2. Compare two current or emerging technologies by describing the advantages and disadvantages of each as they apply to “The Role of the BSN Nurse in Promoting Community Health.”

3. Discuss three anticipated challenges with the current state of technology in the “The Role of the BSN Nurse in Promoting Community Health” course.

4. Explain how you will overcome the three challenges from part C3.

5. Summarize your findings of the curricular technology needs assessment.

E. Write a conclusion focusing on the impact and significance of your proposal by doing the following:

1. Discuss the rationale and purpose of your proposal.

2. Explain how your proposal fills the identified curriculum needs gap.

3. Discuss why implementing this proposal is significant and the impact it will have on the broader field of nursing.

F. Submit your formal proposal in APA style, including but not limited to title page, headers, in-text citations, and references.

G. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.

This kind of essay, however, is different. This is a journalistic inquiry essay, in which you will choose a topic that has some inherent controversy and is contemporary (excluding medical marijuana, legalizing drugs, lowering the drinking age, and others we will discuss in class). You will research the topic, using both academic (peer-reviewed) and “lay” sources, including magazines, other news sources, interviews, case studies, etc. Whatever you do should interest you. Your prose can take a journalistic narrative style (think New Yorker, Harpers, The Atlantic) or, if you are too uncomfortable, you can default to a regular academic essay. Graphics incorporated into the text and into your discussion and analysis are fine as well. You will need to make an argument/advocate for some action. You need to consult a variety of sources for your topic. All sources should be properly cited within the text and again on a works cited page. Your paper must have at least six sources, at least three of which are from scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources. You will also need a works cited page at the end of your paper.

Remember to think about framing for this essay: how will you construct the fruits of your investigation, discussion, and well-crafted writing into a readable, searching, and memorable essay that will invite a well-educated audience, such as found in the New Yorker, etc., into your work? We will be reading a variety of models for this assignment; it is up to you to choose a framing device that works for you. Remember: communications research demonstrates that how one frames a topic has a direct bearing on how the audience will receive it (think political campaigns). How one backs up one’s argument lends credibility (think research and analysis). And how well one chooses words, crafts sentences, and writes creatively will determine how memorable your writing will be (think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.).

From this beginning, you can initiate the Investigative Paper process, which might include:

Identify, define, and analyze the problem: what generates the problem? What is given, what is unknown, what are the criteria for solving the topic? What are factors – historical, contextual, systemic, economic, etc.?

Determine the information that is appropriate for solving the problem, and then research/find it, and assess its validity and authority

Assess the information critically (don’t just “throw the research” into the paper) – analyze it for how it addresses your controversy). Remember to include a counterargument

Determine what graphics might further illustrate your topic. Remember to cite them, and discuss them in your text.

Offer a range of potential solutions to the problem

Evaluate your solutions according to your criteria, choose the most viable option, and take a stand. Think about the contribution you will be making to this field.

Assignment Overview & Purpose:
You are going to be watching two 50 min. videos length, and writing a reflection that analyzes presidential action of Bush and Obama in order to assess the development of executive authority, and analyze constitutionality. I have provided you with multiple objectives, relative to this topic. You will select 1, from those provided, below, to write your response.
The purpose of this assignment is two fold. First, it provides you with resources that can be used for future independent research outside of the reading and writing methods–especially useful for those of you audio and visual learners. Second, it gives you an inside look into two Presidential administrations that have been surrounded by bias and partisan media criticism and praise. Now that you have a better understanding of executive authority it is time for you to apply what you have learned, as evidence, to analyze presidential power in relation to modern political debates of “constitutionality of action” from you own personal perspective.
Formatting Requirements and Submission When writing your essay, respond to the prompt thoroughly, and completely. Essays must be a minimum of 2 pages in length, double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 point font, and written in Times New Roman.
Your response should be your own thoughts and analysis. Research and resources should be incorporated with scholarly application. I.e. used as examples or evidence to support your analysis. Citations may be formatted in APA, MLA or Chicago style, as long as they are consistent throughout. Response Objectives:

1. Compare the strategies implemented by the Bush and Obama administration; and apply these as examples to explain presidential discretion and prerogative.
2. Explain the development of executive power, applying examples of executive behavior implemented, during the Obama and/or Bush observed from the movies, to assess the nature of conflict or conformity with the framer’s intent and what they envisioned for this officeholder’s power when writing the Constitution.
3. After watching the movie(s) apply what you learned to defend your interpretation of Article II in relation to types, limitation, or necessary conditions presidential power by assessing if informal powers, outside of the constitution, exist; or if what is enumerated is what the president has executive authority to do.

After reading the article and viewing the video outlining how to analyze a research article, use those tools to read and analyze an article related to your research. Then write a 1-2 page paper (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1” margins). Your essay should address the following:
1. Summarize the information contained in the abstract.
2. Write down the major purpose of the study.
3. Summarize the introduction. Pay specific attention to the topics presented, the reference citations provided, and how reference citations were used.
4. Evaluate why the authors chose to include the information found in the introduction.
5. List the hypotheses of the study.
6. Evaluate whether the hypotheses follow logically from the arguments presented in the introduction.
7. Briefly summarize the information contained in each of the subsections included under the method section.
