Correlational research describes relations among variables but cannot indicate that one variable causes something to occur to another variable. Rather, a statistically significant correlation coefficient simply indicates there is a relation among a predictor variable and an outcome variable.
In correlational research, if there is a statistically significant correlation coefficient between two variables, you want to know that the relation truly exists. This goal is challenging to achieve because other variables that you are not studying may complicate the study and the interpretation of the results.
You may find a spurious relation in which one common causal variable, sometimes referred to as a third variable, is responsible for the observed relation between the predictor variable and the outcome variable. Imagine seeing a news story reporting the findings of a study claiming that children under the age of 17 who viewed R-rated movies showed a greater likelihood of developing a smoking habit. A third variable that could explain both the predictor and outcome variables is permissive parenting. Permissive parents may allow children to view R-rated movies when they are under the age of 17. In addition, permissive parents may not attend to their children’s whereabouts enough to be aware of their smoking habit, or they may not discipline the children for smoking. Therefore, in effect, you cannot conclude that the movie viewing caused the smoking habit. The permissive parenting may have led to the children’s movie viewing habits and their smoking habit.
You may also identify extraneous variables that might influence the outcome variable but, unlike the spurious correlation described above, these variables do not relate to or influence the predictor variable. For example, consider a reported correlation that the number of books in a person’s home (predictor variable) is related to their college GPA (outcome). An extraneous variable could be, for example, a person’s IQ (intelligence quotient) score. The higher IQ might be related to higher college GPA but not necessarily related to the number of books found in a person’s home. There are additional examples of spurious relations and extraneous variables on pages 174–176 of your course text.
In this Discussion, you focus primarily on spurious relations and extraneous variables. After reviewing examples in the course text, you will find your own examples in the media and explain how they might affect the relations between the variables under consideration.
To prepare:
Review popular online newspapers and/or online magazines to look for articles on research studies. Look for examples of statements and claims that might reflect a spurious correlation or an extraneous variable.
Note: This is not a library assignment, nor should you look for articles that already have reported a spurious relation or extraneous variable. You need to make this connection yourself. For instance, you might see a headline in a news magazine that states something like “Fast-Paced Children’s Television Programming Linked to ADHD.” Look for examples like this.
Identify one popular media example of a correlation that could be argued to be a spurious correlation or that illustrates a correlation that may have an extraneous variable.
With these thoughts in mind:
Briefly explain the example and the claim that has been made.
Identify the predictor variable and the outcome variable.
Identify the correlation. Is it a positive or negative correlation? How did you determine this to be the case?
Identify your proposed spurious (third) variable or extraneous variable.

Assignment 1: Collective Bargaining Analysis (Paper)

Locate an article describing a collective bargaining dispute that has arisen within one year prior to the due date of this paper. If there is not already a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) then there cannot be a dispute of the terms and conditions of that CBA.
A collective bargaining dispute is a disagreement between an employee(s), generally voiced through their union representatives, and employer(s) regarding the terms of employment. This could include disputes regarding conditions of employment, benefits, hours of work, wages to be negotiated during collective bargaining or the implementation of an already agreed upon terms. It could further concern the association or representation of those who negotiate or seek to negotiate the terms or conditions of employment. If the negotiations fail, then the parties generally jointly select a mediator.
The article you chose should be from a newspaper, an academic journal, or a credible online news source (try searching “collective bargaining in the news” and “collective bargaining disputes”). You cannot use any articles related to the NFL/NFPLA/Major league baseball or professional soccer collective bargaining agreements. Also, in Virginia for years the teachers’ union has been fighting for a Collective Bargaining Agreement. VA legislature just recently passed a law allowing the VA teachers to collectively bargain. You cannot use the Virginia teachers’ collective bargaining problem for your article.
The collective bargaining dispute in the article must have occurred in the continental US, Hawaii or Alaska.

In this Unit, we are focusing on Domestic Policy, meaning the programs that the US Government funds for its citizens. We touched on this our module about the bureaucracy. The bureaucracy is the means of the programs, now we focus on the actual programs and the results. Social Security is one of the largest of these programs and its original purpose was to provide income for widows and for the elderly. In the 1930s, it was assumed that if someone was of the working class, the man would work until he died and if he could not work anymore, his children would provide for him and their mother. This did not always happen. Social Security was established in order to prevent these people from ending up on the street. It was a relief for the first generation to receive it. Common everyday people just like us with lives to live – children to raise, jobs to work, bills and taxes to pay, elderly parents to care for, joys and depression, sickness, and absolute fatigue – “tired to death” as one colonist (Mary Cooper) wrote. History can be distorted by perspective and the dominance of one cultural view over another. We generally accept the headline figures as the history makers and relegate any subsequent story to the margins. The common people are sometimes viewed or portrayed as fickle and rebellious and they can act outside of their own interest. With the creation of the Constitution, we created a relative story about the participants and created heroes and legends to describe the people involved in this epic. We rarely examine the economic aspect to this document and as some historians indicated we rarely examine the ramifications to the social structure that it created. When historians review these accounts they sometimes include new characters and new perspectives and some people are offended by these “revisions”. The journey back to our controversial beginnings may be a bit painful! It’s just easier to believe that little George chopped down the cherry tree and couldn’t tell a lie about it. Yet as historians, we owe our founders and ourselves a genuine, honest picture of the past – however cloudy, dark, or even shocking it turns out to be.

Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution (2007) by Woody Holton. Your assignment is to complete the Critical Thinking Analysis (CTA) rubric (2 to 3 pages in length). Be critical and use complete sentences to address each item. From the primary sources (pg. 94-109), select three primary sources that support the main conclusion by Woody Holton. In a paragraph for each source, indicate your reasoning for the selection.

Download the 2015-2016 Demographic Data File from the NHANES website (DEMO_I.xpt) and open it in SPSS.
Download the 2015-2016 Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Questionnaire Data from the NHANES website (BPQ_I.xpt) and open it in SPSS.
Bring the demographic dataset to the front of your screen and merge the demographic data and the blood pressure data files. Remember to choose add variables (not add cases).
Save your merged files as an SPSS dataset.
Keep the merged file open and close the other dataset(s).
Download the 2015-2016 Physical Activity Questionnaire Data from the NHANES website (PAQ_I.xpt) and open it in SPSS.
