3. Psychopathic offenders are said to lack conscience. Examples of psychopathic offenders are individuals who demonstrate a callous disregard for the feelings or welfare of others; who are impulsive, manipulative, and deceitful; and who have a larger-than-life sense about themselves. One case of a (sexual) psychopathic offender was Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer tortured, mutilated, and killed a number of you men before having sexual intercourse with them. Eventually, he was caught by the police and sentenced to multiple life prison terms in Wisconsin. He was murdered by a fellow prisoner. Are persons like Dahmer capable of forming a conscience? If not, then how can we expect moral/ethical behavior from them?

This is a discussion post. I will provide a document that has two articles (2015 was the year it became ok to

The questions that need to be answered are:

Do you think we should allow genetic modification of the germline in the US? Consider if you, your child, or a family member carried a devastating genetic disease that could potentially be eliminated using CRISPR, does this change your answer? Should we be concerned with the possibility of building a eugenic society (think Gattaca)? What about designer babies? Should parents be allowed to select the sex of their baby? How about selecting specific genetic traits like eye color?

The relatively new CRISPR technique allows scientists to cut out a detrimental gene and insert healthy DNA, thereby altering the genetic code of that individual cell. If this mutation occurs in a germ cell (gametes, sperm or egg), it would carry through to every cell in the body and descend in successive generations. The CRISPR technique has the potential to eliminate devastating genetic diseases such as Tay-Sachs, cystic fibrosis or Huntington’s disease, however, many in the scientific community oppose human germline modification on the basis of ethical consequences. Regardless of these concerns, it has already begun. China is leading in this research, where scientists began experimentation on a nonviable human embryo in 2015. In 2018 a Chinese scientist performed gene editing on human embryos to knock out the CCR5 gene, preventing entry of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), creating the first germ-line mutation in a human being. It is reported that China has experimented on over 86 patients thus far, with 15 deaths (no viable sources to back this claim). The United States has not officially prohibited germline modification, although the NIH Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee explicitly states that it “will not at present entertain proposals for germ line alterations”.

III. Analysis of Author’s Technical Skill (three paragraphs)
Choose three points for analysis from the following list:
Purpose – What is the author’s purpose? Is it clear?
Accuracy – Are the facts accurate?
Definition of Terms – Has the author explained what he means by terms that need defining? Ex: If he uses the term “creationist,” does he make it clear just what this means?
Development – Are the main points illustrated and supported with evidence?
Clarity – Can the reader understand an explanation?
Fairness – Has the author presented opposing viewpoints fairly? Has he intentionally misrepresented the opposing viewpoint, or has he belittled his opposition?
Logic – Has the author adhered to the rules of logical thought?
Evidence – Is the evidence presented relevant and reliable?
Authority – Does the author refer to another authority? Is that authority reliable?
Interest – Does it hold the reader’s interest?
Devote one paragraph to each of the three points you plan to analyze.
Make sure that each paragraph has a topic sentence that states your overall judgment of the technical skill under evaluation.
Devote the rest of the paragraph to illustrating how you came to this conclusion.

In each lecture the professor will introduce a historical narrative about an interaction between the U.S. and a part of the African continent. These lectures will give examples from regional, national and individual experiences. The weekly short papers will require students to chose ONE (1) historical document from the Hypothesis exercises (if students find a different document they wish to use they need to get permission from the professor first).
