Paper number 1 will summarize, for a country of your choice, the key nutrition issues faced by the country, who they most affect, key risk factors, their link with health and economic development, and what might be done to address them in cost-effective ways.
The paper must begin with this one paragraph tells all summary, written in single line spacing.
Should be written as a policy brief from the students, as the Secretary of Health, to the Minister of Finance (through your own Minister, of course). As you write the brief, you must put yourself or your group into the role of the Secretary.
The paper should be four pages long, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font. The paper cannot be longer than four pages. A minimum of 5 sources required. The paper must be cited in APA format with intext citations.
The paper should be written in a very clear and very crisp manner, with short sentences, short paragraphs, and as few words as possible.
The paper needs to be written in a manner that will allow the aide of the Minister of Finance to brief him/her on the contents of the brief in about 3 minutes in a car on the way to some meeting since that is what often really happens.
The paper should be written about a country in a different region of the world. The papers should be written in low- or middle-income countries since they are the focus of the course. This will allow you to use the papers to explore selected health and development issues in a variety of settings in a manner deeper than you will be able to do only in the classroom.
The paper should answer the following questions:
What is the nature and magnitude of the problem?
Who is affected by it?
What are the risk factors for the problem?
What are the health, economic, and social consequences of the problem?
What few priority steps do you recommend be taken to address the problem, at least cost, and what is your rationale for these recommendations?
Write the summary and every topic sentence as if it is the only thing that the Minister of Finance is going to read. Your evidence-based storyline should include who gets the disease, why they get it, why I should care, and how the problem can be addressed in the fastest and least-cost manner. When you make your argument, give information about the relative cost-effectiveness of your proposal with evidence.
The briefing note should follow the above outline, with one exception. It should start with a single paragraph that summarizes for the Minister all of the points you want to make. That summary paragraph would read something like 5-6 sentences single space:
About AAA people die every year of TB in our country. The incidence of TB is YYY. About UUU people in our country get drug-resistant TB every year and about HHH% of those who are infected with HIV have active TB disease. TB affects largely the urban and rural poor and stems from poverty, general ill health, and the lack of coverage of our health services. TB causes illness for an extended period, stops people from working, causes them to spend large amounts on health, and leads many families into poverty. DOTS is a low-cost approach to TB diagnosis and treatment that we are not using sufficiently. We must immediately expand our DOTs program, starting in the north, where the disease burden is highest. We must increase case detection and treatment success rates. We must also pay special attention to the diagnosis and management of drug-resistant TB and to TB/HIV co-infection.

Definitions of Aging due
Old age is described in your text using chronological age, social roles, functional age and subjective age.
Explain each of those terms and describe how someone you know, over the age of 60 might fit those descriptions.
Please give two examples to demonstrate these terms. The terms apply to everyone, in one way or another.
As an example, my mother-in-law who died last year, was 98 (chronological age), was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother (social roles), was able to take care of herself and her home until a few months before she died, and was able to continue with many of the same activities she was used to doing (functional age – younger than 98), and if you didn’t know she was 98, you never would have guessed it because she was generally healthy and active, and very involved in life (subjective age – younger than 98).
On the other hand, a hospice patient I worked with was 56 (chronological age), was a former teacher, an aunt, a sister, a terminally ill woman (social roles), was unable to take care of herself and needed total care (functional age – older than 56), and was very ill and not very involved in life (subjective age – older than 56).
And myself: I am 69 (chronological age); a mother, grandmother wife (actually a newlywed- I got married in September of 2019), teacher, artist, sister (social roles); am able to fulfill all the activities of daily living without help, and continue with the activities I’ve been doing, like continuing to teach (functional age – younger than 69); I am healthy, active, involved in the community, and people tell me I don’t “look” 69 (subjective age – younger than 69).

Federalism Overview: Considered together, Hurricane Katrina and Covid-19 both produced policy disasters in the United States that were both unnecessary and linked to federalism. These challenges produced by nature raise the question of whether certain disasters are beyond the capacities of state and local government.
Objective: While watching these films, the central theme to take away from these videos is a better and more comprehensive understanding of Federalism, through real life evidence and explanation. Critically analyze each of the elements and consequences of each different national disaster, based on different level of governments responses, actions. Leadership, communication processes, and decision-making. Despite, both Hurricane Katrina and Corona Virus being deemed as national emergencies, the power organization resulted in vastly different responses by each level of governments leadership (across all levels: federal, state and local).
Introduction to Federalism: State and Local governments are the first line responders to crisis. The institutions encompass not only the national government and the American states, each with their own distinctive histories, but extend down to the local level of counties, cities, smaller communities, and special-purpose entities such as school districts. Support and opposition for Federalism rests on government leadership, power, decision-making, and response to national disasters. Response is a geographic and constitutional matter of design. The principles underlying federalism create a power system where multiple levels of government (local, state, and federal) coexist in an organization of power that is both exclusive and shared, depending on the event at hand. Though the federal government has a vital role to play in advancing national priorities through the powers enumerated to it by the U.S. Constitution, our founders recognized long ago that many of the challenges our citizens face can best be addressed at the state level. The Constitution set forth means for strengthening national governments power, intended to establish a more perfect union (Preamble). Federalism would be the new organization of power, between local, state and federal U.S. government, in order to the remedy weaknesses caused by the Articles of Confederation.

Hurricane Katrina: The Storm Introduction and Background
The preparations made in advance of the storm. Hurricane Katrina’s impact on the nation. “The Storm” chronicles over 40 years of federal responses to Gulf Coast hurricanes and their effectiveness. Coronavirus: Topic Introduction and Background The rapid spread of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) across the United States has been met with a decentralized and piecemeal response led primarily by governors, mayors, and local health departments.
