In this discussion, you will explore the concept of public perception and the impact it has on the mental health field. By reading the Forbes article, Researchers Doubt That Certain Mental Disorders Are Disorders at All, you can see that perceptions regarding mental health shift on a metaphoric pendulum over periods of time.

For your initial post, address the following:

The article notes that labels often define who we are and help us to determine what we are able to do. For argument’s sake, if the scientific community shifted from labels such as ADHD, anxiety, or PTSD to the definition of an individual’s response to the environment, how do you believe society would adapt to the change?
In some cases, a diagnosis can provide individuals with a sense of relief. It gives them the opportunity to address personal issues with a clear treatment plan.
What are the benefits of having labels for mental health disorders?
What are some detriments of having labels for mental health disorders?
How does the concept outlined in this article apply to any of the following programmatic themes? You may want to review the Programmatic Themes PDF document.

Create a reference list of at least four scholarly sources that you will use in your final project.
For this part of the final project, you will use the UMGC Library BEHS 210 Course Guide, UMGC Library databases, or Google Scholar to locate four scholarly or credible sources on your chosen topic. Your articles should represent at least two different social science disciplines.
Submit a summary of each article using the attached worksheet. In your own words, identify the key findings of the article. Do not simply state what the article was about (e.g., “This article talks about cyberbullying”). What specific information did you learn from your source? (E.g., “Cyberbullying has become a popular means of abuse among teenagers, affecting about half of all young people.”) The purpose of the key findings section is to demonstrate that you have read and understood each of your sources. Your key findings should be 300 words in length. Do not simply copy and paste the abstract or any other part of your source! This violates the university’s Academic Integrity policy.

Discussion: Reading Between the Lines

Both Tennyson and Eliot’s dramatic monologues deal with some profound topics.
“Ulysses” is actually an elegy written for Tennyson’s close friend while Eliot’s monologue addresses the hopelessness that is modern condition. Both have very different messages, to be sure. Discuss what you think each author is suggesting in the following quotes:

“As though to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
Little remains; but every hour is saved
From that eternal silence…” – (Tennyson 24-27)

“Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.” (Eliot 45-48)

POST MUST BE 300 WORDS.

AmarElo – It’s All For Yesterday connects the Brazillian art of today with the historical struggles of Afro-Brazillian people. When broken up, the two words mean Love (Amar) & Connection (Elo). Emicida speaks specifically about connecting to the past. He uses a Yoruba proverb [With the stone he threw today, Eshu killed a bird yesterday] at the beginning and end of the documentary to emphasize the point that the effects of the past still reverberate today, and all of our chances to make them right reside in the now.

In a post below, respond to each of the following prompts:

1. What was the most relevant or enlightening aspect of the documentary? Why?

2. Provide an example of how activists’ work today is All For Yesterday? Use the (ABCD) framework below. *This will require some research on your part*

A. Tell us about a historical movement. What was their mission? What was the injustice they fought against? What were some of their accomplishments?

For example: Citizens Against Slum Housing (CASH) was a grassroots organization founded in the early 1960s that fought for fair housing for Black people. Redlining, a system designed to deny financial services to Black residents, was a tactic used during this time to concentrate Black people in low-quality neighborhoods devoid of resources, social mobility, and wealth accumulation. Through on-the-ground organizing, CASH was able to keep housing at the center of the civil rights movement. Eventually, they pressured elected officials and city bankers to issue loans and for Black people to purchase or repair their homes.

B. Describe the ripple effects of the injustice. How are these effects being felt today?

Example Continued: Redlining and segregation concentrated Black people into lower-quality communities. As Black people were funneled into these areas, resources were funneled out. These communities had fewer grocery stores which meant lower access to healthy food; fewer parks and green spaces, which translates to fewer places to exercise and lower air quality; and fewer banks and jobs opportunities which meant fewer financial investments in the community. Because of these detriments (and more), homes in these neighborhoods were valued lower than those in non-redlined, non-Black neighborhoods. This means that Black families in these communities had less opportunity to build generational wealth. And because homeownership is the main way that most families accumulate and pass on wealth, Black people were cut off from a major wealth-building opportunity during this time. Although these systems are illegal now, they are still practiced, and the effects are still being felt today. Most Black people are still concentrated (stuck) in these low-quality neighborhoods because social mobility options were systematically limited through the laws and policies that devalued their homes and communities. Today, this affects which schools Black students can go to because neighborhoods make up school districts. This also determines their quality of education because schools are funded partly by property taxes; therefore, schools in lower-value communities receive less money. And since lower-quality education affects college preparedness and the type of colleges students get accepted to, these effects extend throughout the rest of Black people’s lives (including their career options, career trajectory, income, housing options, community, etc.).

C. How are activists today fighting for justice in these matters?

Example Continued: The Historic District Development Corporation, an organization, founded by Coretta Scott King, is dedicated to preserving the affordability of housing and urban revitalization in the 4th ward district of Atlanta. The organization relies on a three-pronged strategy in its work. The first is non-displacement, which prevents housing displacement by improving life opportunities for low-income and legacy residents. The second strategy focuses on preserving the historical and cultural character of the community. And the third is developing sustainable business programs, entrepreneur workshops, and initiatives that allow families can be self-sufficient. This comprehensive approach helps Black people realize the dream of homeownership. It also revitalizes dilapidated Black neighborhoods, thereby increasing the value of homes in those neighborhoods. And through the organization’s entrepreneurship initiatives, Black residents can leverage the equity in ways that increase generational wealth for themselves and their families.

D. Provide references.

3. Read another student’s post about the most relevant/enlightening aspect of the documentary for them and respond by telling what that aspect of the documentary meant to you.

**Organize your post using the 1, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D method that I used above**
