Map Project

Hello, first I would like to say thank you for your assistance with this assignment, it is greatly appreciated! This is a Map Project that requires a bit of attention based on the things the professor described. I will link the materials given, as well as the instructions for the project. Originality is important here as well as reliable sources.

I will be available for any questions or assistance with materials needed.

Instructions given:
MAP PROJECT
The Africa Map Project is designed to help you learn the continent’s political and physical geography. This is a detail-oriented exercise and will require a certain level of research. It is complex, so please dedicate the necessary blocks of time to complete it.
Every country on the map is numbered. You can use online resources and some of the maps in the reading (there are many maps in the readings for Weeks 1 & 2, 3, and 4 in particular). You should do a little research about every country to find out the information needed to complete the questions below. Although you are discouraged from using Wikipedia for researching essay topics, it does provide good maps and lists of information about African colonial territories, so you may want to check there. Do a search there for “Colonial Nigeria” or “Colonial [name of African country]”.
Please answer the following questions about each country as it corresponds to a number on the map. You must follow the exact format outlined below. Please do not use an Excel spreadsheet to complete this project. Instead make a simple list using a Word document. When you are done with the Map Project, please upload it through the SafeAssign link, which will open later below the map.
For each country corresponding to a number on the map, please answer the following questions:
(a) Current name of country or territory.
(b) Colonial name of country or territory. Please do not list any names from before 1890. Some countries were part of different colonial territories so you may provide more than one colonial territory name here.
(c) Colonial power(s) of the territory. In other words, which European power, if any, ruled the territory from 1890. There may have been more than one colonial power for a single country. You should list them all. It would help if you put the years of rule for the first power, followed by the years of rule for the second power. Remember that Germany lost all four of its African colonies in 1919, so for those countries, you will need to list Germany as one colonial power, and whichever country took over from Germany as the next colonial power.
TIP: There are three contemporary African countries that broke away from other African countries after civil wars. These events took place long after the end of the colonial period. For these countries you can list the colonial power as well as the African country they broke away from as another one of the “colonial powers.”
(d) Colonial capital. Some colonial capitals were moved before independence; you should list at least one of the colonial capitals. Also some colonial capitals were/are the same cities as the current capital, but the name was changed after independence. Use the name before independence.
(e) Colonial language(s) of the territory. This was the language(s) used by the colonial administration, and often taught to the elites of the colonial territory.

(f) Current name (after independence). Here you should list the current name of the country AFTER independence. Notice that this is the same as (a). It is included here for chronological ‘flow’.
(g) Year of independence. When did the colony in question gain independence? Remember that approximately three African countries broke away from other African countries, so they would have two independence dates.
(h) Current capital of the country or territory. This may be the same as the colonial capital. If so, repeat it. Some countries have had more than one capital after independence. Use today’s capital.
(g) Modern languages of the country. You should list at least one major African languages in use in the country if possible. You should also list whichever European language is used if that is a major and widespread language.
MORE TIPS:
Island countries and territories are identified with an (I). There is one island territory that is not actually a country but part of a larger nation. Separately, there is one territory that is not recognized as independent by the United Nations today, but it is still effectively independent. Also, there is a territory which is occupied by another African country even though this occupation technically violates international law. Treat this country as though it were independent.
NOTE: #35 got cut off from the right edge of the map. There were supposed to be one of two island countries in the Indian Ocean, #46 and #35. #46 corresponds to the Seychelles, #35 corresponded to Mauritius and/or Reunion. Please include these in the Map Project accordingly.
Let’s do an example: Morocco is a country that was controlled by two colonial powers: France and Spain.
#5 on the Map
a) Modern Name of Country: Morocco
b) Colonial Name: French Protectorate in Morocco (1912–1956); Spanish Protectorate in Morocco (1912–1956/1958)
c) Colonial Powers: France (center), Spain (north and south)
d) Colonial Capital: French Protectorate in Morocco = Rabat
Spanish Protectorate in Morocco = Tetuán
e) Colonial Language:
French Protectorate in Morocco = French
Spanish Protectorate in Morocco = Spanish
f) Year of Independence of The Country: March 2nd, 1956 from France; April 7th, 1956 from Spain
g) Current Capital: Rabat
h) Modern Languages: Arabic, Berber, Darija, Berber, Hassaniya, French, Spanish
Let’s complete another example involving a German colony. Germany lost Cameroon (which they called Kamerun) in 1919, after World War I. The French and British divided Cameroon, with the French taking over about 85% of the country and the British assuming control over about 15%. In 1960, French Cameroun gained independence, and British Cameroons was split: the southern part of the British region went to newly-independent Cameroon and the northern part of the British region joined newly-independent Nigeria.
#28 on the Map
(A) Cameroon
(B) Colonial Names: German Kamerun (1884-1916) French Cameroun (1918-1960) British Cameroons (1922-1961)
(C) Colonial Powers: Germany (1884-1919); France (1918-1960) after World War I; British (1922-1961) after World War I
(D) Colonial Capitals: Buea (German Kamerun / British Cameroons) Yaoundé (German/French Cameroun)
(E) Colonial Languages: German; French; English
(F) Independence declared on January 1,1960. The southern half of former British Cameroons joined independent Cameroon in 1961.
(G) Modern Capital: Yaoundé
(H) Modern Languages: English, French, Cameroon Pigdin English, Fula, Ewondo
These examples are free – put them in your Word document for the Map Project!

Language change is deterioration

LING 100: PERSUASIVE ESSAY II: UPLOAD TO DROPBOX BY MIDNIGHT ON 3-23-23 (PLEASE RESPOND TO BOTH CLAIMS)

Purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate that you have read the assigned readings and understood the major issues discussed under Claim 3: “Language Change is Deterioration” and Claim 4: “Certain Varieties of English are Better than Others”. You will weigh evidence & arguments presented & persuade your reader regarding your position

Claim 3: Language Change is Deterioration (750-1000 words; about 2-3 pages, doublespaced).

Based on information provided in the readings and issues raised in class, address the following:

Every subsystem of language changes over time. Please briefly describe (and give examples) of at least 3 ways that languages change and how different populations may disagree with how those changes should be perceived: this includes the nature of the change (details), whether the change is natural (evolutionary) or planned (an external change), and the different responses to the change.

Claim 4: Certain Varieties of English are Better than Others CHOOSE ONE: EITHER A or B (750-1000 words; about 2-3 pages, doublespaced)

The following sentences from Myth 12 (Language Myths) are considered slovenly (‘sloppy’ or ‘careless’) or ‘bad grammar’ by some people: 1) Who am I speaking to? 2) Martha’s 2 children are completely different to/than each other; 3)I want to quickly visit the library; 4) A good author needs to develop a clear sense of who she is writing for; 5) Me & Andy went out to the park; Was you watching the game when the rain started? According to the reading (identify page numbers), what is the justification or reasoning used to label each of these sentences ‘bad grammar’ or ‘unacceptable’?

Those who label the above sentences ‘unacceptable’ or ‘bad grammar’ are accused, by linguists, of being guilty of applying “prescriptive grammar rules” to these sentences. Linguists prefer to apply “descriptive grammar rules” in deciding whether a sentence is acceptable or unacceptable. What do prescriptive and descriptive grammar rules mean? What is the difference between the two?

Are you in favor of using prescriptive or descriptive grammar rules? Why?

B)

The article “Ten Reasons Why Texting Is Awful for Society” identified 10 reasons why texting is bad for society. Select 3 of those reasons. Provide an account of what the author says about these reasons. Do you agree or disagree with the author for these 3 reasons? Why?

The Beachboard articles (“Texting: the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly”; “Instant & Text Messaging – The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly”, “Computer-Mediated Communication: Pros & Cons”) and the John McWhorter video identified some advantages associated with texting. State 1 advantage mentioned (or ways texting is not causing deterioration) in each of 3 articles and/or the video (3 advantages in all). Identify the article/video from which each example is selected. Provide an account of what the authors say about these advantages (or lack of harm to the language). Do you agree or disagree with the authors about these advantages? Why?
