After you have reviewed the literature write a four page, double spaced paper, Times New Roman w/12 pt. font in APA style. The closer you follow basic APA in text citing and APA basic referencing, the better. Write as if your reading audience has not read the material. Cite all key points from the beginning to the end of your work. Create a References page in APA format at the end. What are some (at least two) spiritual and cultural programs that help prevent substance abuse? What populations do they serve?

First, think specifically about the facts of topic you have chosen. What sorts of facts, dates and places relate to your topic. What would someone need to know in order to start to think about your subject? For example, if your topic was Alexander the Great, who was he? Who was his father? Where was Macedon? Using the resources, I will give you, summarize briefly the basic facts of your topic.

Second, think about your subject’s place in Greek history more broadly: context. How does Alexander relate to his predecessors as king of Macedon (Phillip) and his successors (Ptolemy, Antigonus, Seleucus) What is the Hellenistic period? What was his relationship to other great figures of the times? Aristotle? Demosthenes?
Third, think about hoe Alexander expmplifies broad trends in Greek history. What historical trends does Alexander’s rise exemplify? How did the rule of Macedon affect the city state? How was he different from a figure such as Pericles?

Finally, in conclusion, simply think briefly about the relationship of your subject to the modern world (your life!) How does Alexander the Great impact life today? For example, why was Alexander important? What were the effects of his conquests? Pick one or two of these questions and try and answer them.

The Harlem Renaissance was the name given to the cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem between the end of World War I and the middle of the 1930s. During this period Harlem was a cultural center, drawing black writers, artists, musicians, photographers, poets, and scholars. There is no doubt of the profound effect that this era left on America and its literary canon.

GENERAL FRAME:

The point of this paper is:

To demonstrate—with a particular topic in mind—how the mythical norm has shaped our dominant perspectives as a society.
To re-vision/re-imagine alternative images of what could be considered natural/normal/ideal, if we were freed of that image of the mythical norm.
To analyze dominant media images through the lens of a) privilege and oppression, and b) intersectionality.
SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS:

I’d like you to “think outside the box” of the mythical norm, and to re-vision what could be considered natural/normal/ideal with regard to any of the following topics:

dominant media images of individual’s receiving government assistance, social services, and/or welfare
dominant media images of individuals seeking birth control services or abortion services (reproductive rights)

CONTENT HINTS/REMINDERS:
• Identity categories refers to demographic categories like race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, etc.

• In Chapter 3 on “Privilege and Oppression”, we learned about the composite trope of the mythical norm. More specifically, we learned the following things about the mythical norm:

a) How the mythical norm creates a false equivalence between privileged identity categories and what society considers to be average/normal/ideal (in other words, we learned that the mythical norm creates a false understanding of privileged identity categories—that is, whiteness, middle-class, Christianity, heterosexuality, able-bodied, thin-bodied, etc—as average/normal/ideal).

b) How the privileged identity categories of the mythical norm are frequently
embedded within the dominant or stereotypical images that we see in the mass media (in other words, we learned that the main characters and protagonists of the mainstream media that watch usually embody most or all of the characteristics of the mythical norm).

c) How individual members of society internalize the mythical norm, which then affects how—each of as individuals, and society as a whole—consider what is “natural”, “normal” and even “ideal”—and by contrast, what is considered “unnatural”, ”abnormal”, and “undesirable.”Feminism is about developing a heightened consciousness of how the mythical norm shapes our perspectives, and also about questioning those perspectives by asking: Who is privileged by this image? Who is hindered/held back by these images? What are alternative images that could be circulated and what might be the beneficial effect of those alternate images?

I have been assigned to the second half of chapter 5 in the text book ‘The Theatre Experience, 13th Edition’ by Edwin Wilson.
