The Iroquois Theater Fire of 1903

(( From the instructor))

Prepare

Research and find information on a large fire incident that occurred in the history of the United States which generated significant changes in fire codes and safety standards. A few examples of acceptable events for this assignment would include:

Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire, 1977
The Station Nightclub Fire, 2003
One Meridian Plaza Fire, 1991
Iroquois Theatre Fire, 1903
Coconut Grove Fire, Boston, 1942
Hotel Vendome Fire and Collapse, 1972
Charleston Sofa Superstore Fire, 2007
Reflect

While researching your selected event keep the 5W’s in mind. Base an analysis of the incident on pre-event conditions, causes of ignition and fire spread, the emergency response, lessons learned, and/or aftermath of the incident. Think about how the event impacted the emergency responders and the victims of the event. Also, consider the impact this event had on the rest of society, such as driving fire code requirements, increasing awareness of specific hazards, etc.

Write

You are to write and submit an 8 to 10-page written case study of this research in proper APA format. The paper should be double spaced and use a Calibri or Times New Roman font with a maximum of size 12. Provide in your analysis what you consider to be the top three changes the event highlighted for improvements in fire safety. Please make sure you include proper headings in your case study paper. These headings should include, at a minimum, the following:

Introduction
Background Information
Incident/Event Information
Emergency Response
Aftermath, or Lessons Learned
Resources

Oceanographic Research

Research one pelagic marine species and one benthic marine species. Tell us about the creature including what it eats and what preys on it, its appearance, where in the marine environment it lives, and any special features or adaptations that allow it to survive. You also need to include a photo of each.

Your initial response should be 150 words.

Tsunamis are some of the most destructive national disasters on our planet. They can be caused by landslides, earthquakes, volcanoes. Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire and is subject to a large number of earthquakes, volcanoes, and their resulting Tsunamis. Indonesia has 147 volcanoes of which 76 are active and is comprised of over 17,500 islands. This means that have a great deal of coastline at risk.

Tsunamis are difficult to manage, partly due to the fact that we cannot predict when earthquakes will strike or when volcanoes will erupt. Once detected, a Tsunami warning can be sent out. Some regions due to their close proximity only have about 15 minutes notice before the Tsunami occurs. This is a specific problem in regions like Indonesia that tend to be close to the site where the Tsunami is generated. The 2004 Tsunami in the Indian ocean killed 227,000 people in an afternoon. The wave was in excess of 100 feet high and traveled in some regions over 200 miles an hour and more that 4.9 miles inland.

Please watch the following videos. Then write a 150-word response.

With such little notice and the inability to predict Tsunamis what can be done to assist the 267 million people who live in Indonesia and Tsunami prone areas?

Can you imagine living in this region and having to deal with these instead of hurricanes?

What would you do if you lived in this region and received notice that a Tsunami was going to hit within an hour?

This is a tough and serious reality faced by people in several regions of our world.

A 3000-word essay excluding bibliography (choose topic from the list)

– A 3000-word essay excluding bibliography
– The essay should contain a thesis statement that responds to your chosen essay topic, a body that presents a logical argument, and a conclusion consistent with these other features. It should reference supporting evidence, such as direct data and/or references to relevant peer-reviewed academic articles and books.
– The essay should be presented and organized in a professional manner in terms of logic, writing, and physical organization. It must follow scholarly conventions for footnoting, referencing, and the bibliography and contain at least 12 relevant sources beyond the text and course readings. The quality of writing is a key element in determining the grade value of an essay.
– Please use the American Psychology Association (APA) format of in-text, parenthetical citations for documenting sources.
– The essay should be presented and organized in a professional manner in terms of logic, writing, and physical organization. It must follow scholarly conventions for footnoting, referencing, and the bibliography and contain at least 12 relevant sources
– Literature Review: The heart of your paper should be a sound literature review. It is from this that you will gain knowledge of the area of political science with which you will engage to find your thesis statement, research method, and evidence to support your research claim or thesis statement.

Thesis Statement or Research Claim: In the social sciences, a thesis statement in the form of a research claim or question is followed by a test of that research claim. This thesis statement or research claim has either an implicit or explicit model or theory that connects the thing to be explained (explanandum) sometimes called the dependent variable with the thing doing the explaining (explanans), sometimes called the independent variable. Another way of thinking about this is “how does variation in the independent variable affect the d_e_p_e_n_d_e_n_t_ _v_a_r_i_a_b_l_e_?_” _
Explanatory Model: An essay proposes an explanatory model that links an IV and DV and then tests it to see if it is accurate. Please state your explanatory model as explicitly as possible.
Observed facts, events, data, and so forth → _Explanation or Theory → _Observed facts, events, data, and so forth.
Independent/or Explanatory Variable → _Explanation or Theory → _Dependent (effect to be Explained) Variable
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE → DEPENDENT VARIABLE

It is also affected by the level of polarization in the party system (the literature review would explain this).
Your explanatory model, research method, and test of the explanatory model will describe the logic of your argument. Explanatory theories or models may be deductive, inductive, or deductive in reasoning/inference. Your essay should be inductive in form. You may also use abductive reasoning, a simplified version of induction. These are the most tractable forms of reasoning.
Research Method and Evidence: Your explanatory model and research method combine to define a way of testing your research claim about the link between your independent and dependent variables. The test of your research claim is applied consistent with some research method which explains how to collect and analyze evidence or data. Please describe your research method in your essay.
Induction and abduction make use of empirical evidence. You describe the observed facts or data that connect your independent and dependent variables and accord with the explanatory theory or model that explains Political Science 463 L01 W2023 Dr. Anthony Sayers Page 3 of 11
that connection. These empirical data or evidence may be quantitative or qualitative, or a mix of the two. Descriptions of a variety of evidence and associated research methods commonly used in political science may be found in:
Select two advanced or post-industrial democracies each from a different continent (Eastern Europe, Western Europe including Britain and Ireland, Asia, North America, South America*, Australasia). In the question below, those two countries are represented by the letters B and C, the topics to be linked as dependent and independent variables from the list below are represented by C and D..
Through careful description and analysis, compare the character or operation of ___A___ in country ___B ___ and ___C ___ and provide evidence of how it shapes ___D___ in each, making sure to discuss the evidence used to demonstrate or test this claim.
It is possible to do more than 2 countries, but you will need the permission of the instructor (see below).

You will need to email the instructor indicating the topic you would like to write on, a potential question, the countries you wish to consider, and 12 sources available through the University of Calgary Library that you might use to address the question.
If you are particularly interested in electoral or party politics in Canada, you may also compare two provinces if you may make use of the Canadian Elections Database (http://canadianelectionsdatabase.ca.) in writing your paper. Please see the instructor before embarking on a project that makes use of the database.
Essay Grading
Your essay should
1. Have a clear thesis statement that captures your explanatory model. A thesis statement should read something like:
I will argue that due to the (logic of) institution _A_, country B_ better delivers _D_ in comparison with country C , as evidenced by (evidence/data).
If you are unsure of what is required, please consult the instructor.
2. Provide a literature review that presents the major existing arguments for your topic of interest.
3. Provide a graphic of your argument (see below)
4. Define the principle or outcome you have chosen (how you will operationalize your dependent variable)
5. Give a concise description of the consequential differences in the operation of the institution or element in each country (how you will operationalize your independent variable)
6. Identify how you intend to measure or assess the difference in outcomes (the test of your explanatory model)
7. Lay out the evidence/data and research method that allows you to test and demonstrate this effect.

Analysis of Chinese Communist Party (PRO CCP)

For this course, you will be asked to write a 5-7 page paper (typed, double-spaced, with a bibliography of cited
sources) on one of the following topic (Question C):

C) In one particular country (please identify the country), examine a particular poltitical party in which you discuss:
1) What does the group or organization look like and how is it structured (including the leadership)? What are its goals?
Primary issue area(s)? What kind of resources (ex. money) does it possess?
2) Who makes up its membership and/or target audience or constituency (group it serves)?
3) What is the history of its involvement in domestic politics? How influential do you think it is either domestically,
regionally, or globally? What kind of potential does it have for involvement and influence in domestic or regional politics
in the future? Please focus on a group that has domestic or regional influence only, NOT any group which is
influential internationally

Paper Requirements
* 5 to 7 page length (you are allowed to go a page or two over 7 pages but you will be penalized if your paper is less
than 5 pages). The page count only includes pages of text. Any cover pages or works cited/bibliography pages do
not count as pages of text.
* The paper should be written with a size 12 Times New Roman Font. The margins should be one inch all around.
Please insert page numbers somewhere on the pages.
* A cover page is not required. However, you are free to include one if you wish. Either on the cover page or top
right of the first page of text, you should have the following information:
Your Name
Date
Political Science 130
Question C
You should have a title either in the middle of a cover page or in the middle above the beginning of the paper’s text.
Try to catch the reader’s interest with your title. Don’t just call your paper “Political Science 130 Paper.”
Sources
You must cite AT LEAST 4 different sources in your paper. AT LEAST 2 of these sources should be from
“academic” type sources (explained below). These sources include a number of online resources, books, and
academic journals. Check with the instructor if you are unsure about the acceptability of your sources.
Unacceptable sources include encyclopedias (both written and online) and websites not approved by the
instructor (i.e. Ron’s Politics Site). Do not lift material in large amounts from Wikipedia. I will investigate
Wikipedia to make sure you have not taken large amounts of your information from that website. If you have
any questions about whether a website is a legitimate source, simply e-mail it to the instructor. Official and
academic websites are the most reliable and don’t need to be confirmed by the instructor. Try to use sources outside of popular magazines (i.e. Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report) and newspapers. These sources are often good for background information but don’t provide as much substance as books, academic journals, or online
research resources.
An academic journal article:
 Is written by a professor or researcher in an academic discipline
 Reports on research or provides a scholarly analysis of a topic
 Is published in a refereed journal-a journal which uses a panel of academic referees to select articles for
publication
 Documents its sources in footnotes or a bibliography
 Academic sources can also include official websites of organizations and websites hosted through a
university (ending in .edu). Some academic sites will end in .org (ask instructor if a website is an academic
source)

Final Assignment

This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin™

Choose one of the myths from the Myths and Misunderstandings reading to develop it into a 8-10-page (excluding the reference page) research paper.

For each myth you will find several accompanying resources at the end of the topical discussion.
In addition to these readings, locate two or more scholarly journal articles and/or one or more scholarly websites to apply within the paper. Avoid popular and general sources such as Psychology Today, Simply Psychology, etc.

Example: Claim #11 (p. 79): Parents need to have contact with their babies right after birth, so they can bond with them.

If you choose this myth you will be researching attachment/parent-infant bonding/maternal-infant interaction and further researching the general questions provided in Claim #11: Does a parent’s relationship with a child really depend on immediate contact after the child is born? Depending on your interests you might look into infants that are in the ICU for prolonged periods of time after birth, or review what hospitals do to support attachment in difficult situations.

Essentially, you will be writing a research paper which

Updates the information in the Mercer chapter which you choose
Lets you research one or more aspects of the topic which particularly interest you while still answering the Myth questions.

Additional
Note: Be sure to locate, read and apply the resources listed in the reference list for your myth and apply additional scholarly resources (at least two) (e.g., current journal articles; scholarly websites).

For all written assignments please follow this format to effectively organize and to ensure you have covered all criteria:

Begin with an Introduction heading
Create a subheading for each criteria from the directions
End with a Conclusion heading
Add a Reference page.

objective and subjective two paragraph writing

Neighborhood Stroll
Instructions: For this assignment, we will practice the difference between objective and subjective descriptive writing. This is posted as a pdf to this week’s module. After going over the material…
Take a brief walk outdoors. Take notes during your brief walk. Plan on spending 10-15 minutes taking notes. Collect observations and impressions of sights, sounds, and smells — anything from the weather, the season, the time of day to the people you see, how crowded it is, the general mood, etc.
Return to your work space to write up your notes using complete sentences in TWO 10-12 sentence, well-organized, well-developed paragraphs. The paragraphs are broken down as follows:
Paragraph 1: Objective description of your surroundings. You may want to adopt the stance of a local giving a guided tour to someone unfamiliar with the area. Alternatively, you may choose to play the role of this unknown visitor, reporting what you experience with fresh eyes.
Paragraph 2: Subjective description of your walk. What about this place effects you, and how do you think it shapes your world view and your values? Don’t be afraid to take liberties with describing what surrounds you. See the student example “The Valley of Windmills” included in the pdf.
Turn in your paragraphs to the textbox.
