APPLIED ETHICS: Applying 4 Ethical Frameworks to a Case Study – Case 4-1: Ivy’s Decision: Have an abortion or not?
In (Nursing Ethics textbook)
Janie B. Butts and Karen L. Rich. Nursing Ethics: Across the Curriculum and into Practice.
TOPIC
Case 4-1 Ivy’s Decision: Have an abortion or not?
Your response will involve 6 paragraphs in total, as outlined below.
Ignore the textbook questions at the end of each case study. Instead,
work though each of the case studies using EACH of the 4 ethical frameworks. You will do this in one paragraph for each framework. For each
framework, apply its main tenets or principles to your Case Study and
arrive at a decision about what outcome would likely be.
After these 4 paragraphs, write a 5th paragraph describing which
(if any) ethical framework most matches your personal moral views. Describe why. Lastly, write a 6th paragraph describing your experiences
doing this assignment: were there any unexpected results?, surprising answers? Was it harder to apply some frameworks over others? Were
there any similarities/differences in applying the frameworks?, etc. You don’t need to answer all of these questions – just 1 or 2. These are
meant to be examples.
It will be harder to apply some frameworks than others. You may have
to make some assumptions or details in order to reach an intelligent conclusion. That is fine, as long as you clearly identify them in your posting. Some examples might be: The vaccine shortage will only last 6 months; The patient has no family support; etc.
To summarize, you will clearly identify the Case Study you have chosen (by name) and write 6 paragraphs as follows:
1. Apply Principlism to solve the dilemma. Address each of the
4 principles
2. Apply Deontology to solve the dilemma.
3. Apply Consequentialism to solve the dilemma
4. Apply Natural Law (AKA Catholic Bioethics) to solve the dilemma.
Address the 3 foundational theological concepts and other lesser
principles which are relevant – not all will be relevant, but say so. This
material was presented in Dr. Parker’s eLecture.
5. Describe which framework mostly closely represents your personal moral outlook in the case study you choose, and explain why.
6. Describe your observations about this assignment and the
frameworks in general.
Analysis of Inequality and Neoliberalism
Objective of the Paper:
“To develop an analysis of forms of inequality and the forms of social change that produced them. What social, economic, political, or ideological changes have occurred over the past 40+ years and how have these changes affected inequality?” Answer this question using inequality and neoliberalism
Using a minimum of 3 sources and only using direct quotations (no paraphrasing) from the listed sources that are linked.
Paper Criteria:
The introductory paragraph should identify what you will be analysing, why it is important, and must have a clear thesis (what you will argue), rather than just a topic (ie., “in this essay I will analyze or discuss…). Spell out key texts/authors that you will use. Define any terms that you introduce.
Each paragraph should focus on one aspect (paragraph unity): description, history, conceptual development, meaning/interpretation, compare/contrast, or significance that you develop from a course reading.
Descriptions must be coherent and detailed: flesh out details from texts or visual media in the course: styles, gestures, language, presentation, and the relationships between people, things, institutions, or the spaces they occupy. Including supporting detail is essential in the crafting and support of your argument. These details are essential to supporting any arguments or concepts that you wish to develop in relation to these events or interactions.
Develop the meaning or implications with reference to course readings and key concepts from course texts. Incorporate direct quotes and integrate them in your work. Follow the reading response assignment for integrating quotes into your essay.
Work to develop overall coherence. Each paragraph should be connected to content in previous paragraphs and/or to the thesis. Show how each new element expands an understanding of the structures of neoliberalism or inequality.

Making Multiple Choice Questions
Instructions: You have seen many multiple choice (MC) questions in your academic life. This week you will be developing your own MC question.
Step 1: Write a paragraph summary of your reading on MC testing. Include pros and cons; what it does best and what not so well. (Minimum 300 words).
Step 2: Add your midterm instructional objective to your Assignment 11 document. Use the revised version if revisions were needed.
Step 3: Develop an original, creative and effective multiple choice question to evaluate whether the learner has mastered your instructional objective from step 2. Provide a short explanation of why/how this question is appropriate to evaluate your objective.
Your question will need:
A strong stem
Well developed answer choices with one clearly correct answer and 3 reasonable distractors (wrong answers)
A succinct explanation (to provide learner feedback) explaining why each distractor is incorrect.
The MC question should be your own original work and may NOT be copied from another source or existing test.
Please remember that a concise and succinct post of original work is what is expected.
