What do the three “danteworlds”–hell, purgatory, and paradise–mean to you?
Reply to these classmates discussion post.
Q: What do the three “danteworlds”–hell, purgatory, and paradise–mean to you? How do you envision them? How do you think they might relate to one another and to the world(s) in which we live?
Classmate 1 Response: These three danteworlds mean to me very different things. When I think of hell I think of evil and suffering endured by those who sinned and were sent to hell to be punished for their acts. I envision fire and many upset people who are being punished. On the other hand, Purgatory in my words is punishment after death. “Roman Catholic doctrine the souls of those who die in God’s grace may make satisfaction for past sins and so become fit for heaven” (Merriam-Webster,2023) meaning this is a temporary punishment which endures suffering. Lastly, when I think of paradise I dream of this very colorful place where there are angels and a happy place for people who no longer have to suffer and they can be at peace and see loved ones. While all of these words are different meanings to other people they relate to our world as well as history. When in church or growing up where religion plays a big part in your life you are taught about the different worlds and how to avoid hell and worship god and pray to make it to heaven. These worlds are very important because a lot of people are aware of them and they will continue to be taught about them.
Classmate 2 Response: In my mind, these places are all very person specific. While I agree that there are lesser sins, and that the punishment should fit the severity of sin, it must be personalized. Hell isn’t divided into circles where one punishment fits all that are guilty of a particular sin. People are more complex than this. None of us are perfect, and we all sin in a multitude of ways. The punishment should therefore be specifically tailored to each individual’s sins, and take their own personal fears and demons into consideration.
I wasn’t raised to believe in purgatory, though I do appreciate the idea of a place where sinners are allowed to reflect and atone. It takes people a lifetime to learn important lessons. It seems reasonable to me that since souls are supposed to be immortal, the ability to learn and move forward should still be a possibility after death.
I believe that heaven too, is different for everyone. My version would differ from those closest to me, despite knowing many of the same people and having many similar beliefs. As human beings, we know different aspects of people. It seems reasonable to me that we would see the people we knew the way that we saw them in life. For example my version of my parents would be very different from the version their parents or their friends saw. Every individual’s perception of perfection is different, so why wouldn’t our interpretation of paradise and how we see those there vary as well?
I do enjoy Dante’s idea that these realms are all intertwined, and that there is a way to move through the lower levels to eventually reach paradise. I have no real thoughts as to how exactly they relate to the world we live in. I find it a bit unsettling to think that those no longer living are able to view our lives, so I’ve never enjoyed the idea of those that have passed ‘watching over” me. I prefer to believe that life and the afterlife are both very separate things.
Q: Dante literally faces a mid-life crisis. What problems or issues do you associate with such an event? Can you think of any recent representations–in movies, books, the news, and so on–of some sort of mid-life crisis?
Classmate 1 Response: When I think of a mid-life crisis I think of very hard times and people questioning there self as well as the accomplishments they have achieved. They want to know do these things still provide meaning to them and fulfillment to there lives. For example, during this time they have children, and maybe they are taking care of a loved one this person is dealing with so much at one time they aren’t aware they are damaging their own well-being. A movie I have seen where someone faced a tuff time is called “bad boys for life”. In this movie, there is a detective (Marus) who retires which causes his friend(Mike) to make a spin. He tries to prove to Marcus he is still youthful and the work of being a detective is not affecting him. Both men are viewing life differently because they are getting older but, an attempt to recapture their youth is put to the test when a crime lord tries to murder detective Marcus.
Classmate 2 Response: We see the effects of a mid-life crisis all the time. People panic at the idea of getting older, the realization that they haven’t accomplished what they thought they would, or that they don’t have the kind of family they thought they would. Some people get so caught up in raising their children that they lose sight of who they are, and have difficulty just being themselves again when faced with the reality of their children becoming self-sufficient adults. People get divorced and have such severe anxiety or fear at starting over that they seem to become entirely different people.
I’ve always found the way this topic is portrayed so differently in men and women by the entertainment industry to be odd. In films like Eat, Pray, Love and Under the Tuscan Sun the women always seem to be “finding themselves” and becoming the strong, independent person they always knew they were. In films like Crazy, Stupid, Love and This is 40, the men are blundering idiots that act so foolishly at times that you wonder how they ever managed to find a wife in the first place.
