Characters and Themes
Texts: This essay is going to be based off the short story called “The Yellow Wallpaper” (215-229)
Assignment: Analyze how the symbolism in one story we read/watched develops a particular theme. I recommend focusing on 1-2 symbols as the focus of your paper. Then, indicate what theme these symbols help support, which will then give you a strong thesis. For instance, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind uses color symbolism to teach audiences a valuable lesson. If I choose this as the focus of my paper, then I will select 1-2 colors that symbolize a deeper idea in the film. Somewhere in your paper, you should make a connection to another story or play.
Tips:
* Essays must be in MLA format – typed, double-spaced, 12-point font and with a Works Cited page. If you need more information on how to write the Works Cited page, then visit the link I uploaded on CanvasLinks to an external site.. Essays without a Works Cited will receive up to 5% grade penalty.
* Essays must be between 4-6 pages (4 is the minimum and 6 is the maximum).
* You must use 4 sources in this essay:
The first is your primary source (the story you are focusing on). You should consistently reference this story throughout your essay. Quote from the story at least 3-4 times.
The second is your secondary source (another story, play or film from the sources I assigned to which you’re making a connection in one paragraph). For a full list, see the “Text” section of this assignment sheet. Quote from the secondary source at least 1-2 times.
The third is a web article (a credible newspaper or magazine article) that you have researched and find both relevant and credible. Quote from the web source at least 1-2 times.
The fourth is a scholarly article from a scholarly journal or book (scholars are people with high degrees who publish peer-reviewed articles in their studied field). Quote from the scholarly source at least 1-2 times.

Assessment 2 part B
assessment instructions
Locate a contemporary issue pertinent to nursing that is being discussed in the media (this can include social media). Discuss the professional responsibilities of nurses in relation to your chosen issue with reference to a relevant code or standard. Reflect on how the university course you are enrolled in will prepare you with the capabilities to negotiate this issue as a nurse.
In completing this task, you should:
Give a brief overview of the issue have chosen to focus on.
Pick one element or principle from either the:
NMBA Standards for Practice,
NMBA Code of Conduct
ICN Code of Ethics.
For example, in the Registered Nurse Standard for Practice, ‘Actively engages with the profession’ (3.6) is one element.
Reflect on your own educational development (and/or anticipated development) and how this will prepare you to manage this issue (or similar) in in relation to the chosen code/standard.
Tips:
You will do well to discuss a range of issues and codes/standards as you read and respond to the posts of others on the discussion board.
However, given the limited word count, focus on only one issue for your final submission. This issue should be specific and you should be able to reference the media source where an example of this issue has appeared.
You need to demonstrate an understanding of capability. You will do well if you can integrate this concept through your:
discussion on the responsibilities of nurses
reflection on your educational development
You will need to include reference to scholarly literature for your submission. That is, do not rely solely on references to the codes and standards.
When reflecting, be explicit. For example, you could refer to particular events or content (in any unit).
Marking Criteria
All submissions will be marked against this rubric. There is limited space in the rubric to provide all details , and it is expected that students are familiar with the information provided on this page. The marking criteria for Assessment 2: Part B are explained in detail in the following tabs.
This task is in place to ensure that people read their Part A feedback and take steps to address this feedback. The template will hopefully make the process straight forward.
Pick two pieces of feedback you received. You then need to list 2 or 3 actions that you took to improve your submission in response to this feedback. Some of these feedback points might relate to some of the links in the Additional resources for academic writing page. In which case, picking out appropriate actions may be relatively straight forward.
For higher marks here, we are looking for evidence of meaningful actions/strategies. For example, if you lost marks for not being adequately engaged in the discussion board, simply saying ‘I engaged more in the discussion board’ does not give any indication of the root of the issue to start with. It may have been a time-management issue, an issue of understanding MyLO, reading assessment requirements or simply not being comfortable posting on the discussion board. What actions did you undertake to address these issues. Did you seek help or use a learning tool to assist?
And avoid treating this like a ‘tick-box’ exercise. For example, if there are issues with your referencing, identifying that you have undertaken meaningful actions but then showing no signs of improvement will really highlight the lack progress. So ensure you give yourself ample time to address both pieces of feedback.
To perform well in this criterion, you will need to have engaged in frequent and collegial discussion with peers on the discussion board. These should include posts relevant to the topic at hand, although it is fine for some posts to be off-topic. Asking for ideas/help/feedback from peers – and providing ideas/help/feedback to peers – is a good way to score highly in this criterion.
The earlier you post, the better. That is, even if you had a large number of relevant and collegial posts, if they all appeared in the week before the submission date, you would most likely lose some marks in this criterion. You will note that in the rubric, if you don’t post early, the highest grade you will receive for this criterion is a pass.
For Part B, an early post will be considered anything before March 7.
You will not be marked on the academic presentation or referencing technique used in your discussion board posts. You will not be marked on any misconceptions posted. The discussion board is place for you to discuss ideas, provide and receive feedback, and practice and develop your submission for each topic.
For further information on how to engage in collegial discussions online, please see these Netiquette guidelines
You must demonstrate proficiency against this criterion by addressing the Assessment 2: Part B question. You will note there are a few elements to the question. Overall, students who give specific examples and are able to integrate concepts through their discussion will do well. A submission that only includes vague reference to issues and concepts will not get good marks.
Locating a contemporary issue
You will need to identify a contemporary issue in the media. Identify to the reader where you found this issue reported. Provide detail and provide a reference. This would form a logical first body paragraph. You can then link your discussion back to this issue through your essay.
Professional responsibilities
You will need to use your chosen issue to identify the responsibility of nurses. When discussing the responsibility of nurses in relation to this issue, you will need to do so with a good understanding of the concept of capability. For this reason, an early explanation of capability would be appropriate. You will also need to reference one code/standard to illustrate the responsibility of the nurse, in relation to your chosen issue.
When discussing a code or standard, keep the focus narrow. Ideally, you will illustrate the relevance of this code/standard throughout your writing. For example, when reflecting on an aspect of your education, you would do well to illustrate (even if briefly) how this links to the code/standard you have chosen.
Reflecting on your university education
Your reflection on your own education could fit well at the end of your essay – the last body paragraph or two. When discussing an aspect of your nursing education, avoid vague sweeping statements. You are encouraged to focus on an aspect of your education. This will enable a deeper discussion with integration of concepts, rather than a discussion that reads like a list of ideas. Ideally, identify where in the course you have covered, or anticipate covering, this aspect. Your understanding of the concept of capability should be clearly relayed as you reflect on your education.
For this reflection, you should not feel the need to spend onerous amounts of time trying to figure out where you will be learning things that you have not yet covered. You may have touched on something in a particular unit and can use this as a reference point. Have you learnt enough? Do you feel you need to learn more? What specifically do you need to learn? If you have not even touched on a concept, you might find the BN 3-year pathway document on the BaRN useful. Even if the name of the unit gives you a hint of what might be covered, that should be adequate. ‘I am hoping that we will cover more in relation to… in unit NUR…’ An example is provided in this post.
Refers to a range of literature
This only relates to your submitted post for marking. To do this well, you will need to support your arguments with reference to a range of sources (such as textbooks, policy documents, standards, newspaper articles etc). We do not like giving a set number of required references, because a small number of quality references that are well integrated into a discussion is better than a lot of poorer quality references that are not effectively used. However, as a guide:
For each submitted post, there should be reference to at least four sources, and at least one of these should be scholarly sources (namely, a peer-reviewed journal article). Students who do particularly well in this criterion will exceed this guidance.
Your ability to integrate literature will also be rewarded here. That is, do you effectively cite literature to support your arguments. You can find information on how to do this in The Study Toolkit.
The date of the article is often a point of contention. In module 1.3, it says the following:
For clinical subjects, this usually means articles published within the past five years; for non-clinical subjects a ten-year limit is appropriate.
This is meant as guidance only and varies between subjects. For this assessment, you will not get marked down for citing an article purely on the basis of it being older than 10 years. If it is a good article, then you can use it regardless of age. The following is fine because what was true 22 years ago in relation to educational approaches applies today:
‘Fraser (2001) argued that learning is complex, but such complexities are well-suited to development of capability’
However, be mindful of how you use it. If you are discussing contemporary issues and cite an article written in 1998, have you implied that what this article says applies today? For example:
‘The perception that nurses are merely the assistants of doctors is widespread in Australia (Clancey 1998)’
This is clearly problematic because what was a social perception on this matter 25 years ago may not apply today. Citing Stephenson, on the other hand, who wrote about capability in 1998, is absolutely fine as he is a seminal writer on the topic and the principles he spoke about then still apply today.
Please remember that what applies in this unit and assessment does not necessarily apply elsewhere.
You will get good marks in this criterion for a well-structured submission that is free of punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors. In addition, this criterion will assess your adherence to the Harvard referencing system. You are strongly encouraged to refer to the Additional resources for academic writing page for further guidance.

Overall Feedback
Well done Savanah!
I have highlighted improvements and provided tips that you could make throughout your paper and may consider for your future academic writing. I may have only highlighted issue’s the first time so just be aware that you may have repeated the mistake.
You were also required to not only make a post but to contribute to your peers discussions over the time the board was open. This not only assists you to think more broadly but get prepared for nursing communication. We constantly, support and share with each other to improve our practice. It would be good to see you support your peers by sharing some of your work or resources. Also try to respond to multiple people to encourage discussions. Beginning on the discussion board early provides your peers with time to respond and develop even better discussions on your topic.
The main points of your essay are great, however, you needed to back them with evidence. You did a great job identifying how your perception of nursing has shaped your perception.
You write extremely well, clear and in a logical manner. I have included feedback to assist, just making the few changes to getting that academic writing recipe right!
Your referencing is consistent, but you need to follow the Harvard system, copy the referencing guide like a food recipe. If there is a Comma put a comma, if there are italics use italics. Also the reference list is derived from the sources you cited in your writing. Referencing is something worth putting time into as it is always marked and once you nail it, it is easy marks! You won’t be marked down for using a different referencing system this time, However, you are expected to use Harvard for your Utas studies and marks will be deducted usually. You should be extremely proud of the effort you have put in!
Although feedback can be confronting, our intention is to help you to develop your future academic writing and improve your marks. There has been extra time allocated, so we can give you more than normal feedback for this assessment. Not all of the comments effect your mark they are there to guide you to move up to the next level of writing and get you better marks as you learn. I hope you find this feedback and the in-text feedback useful for your future academic assessments.
Thank you for your paper!
Warm regards
Tina King
